A reported materials-chemistry approach uses short sections of a second kind of nanotube to wrap a carbon nanotube in a protective sheath. Ultrasound breaks the preformed NDI-Bola nanotubes into ring-like pieces; those pieces thread onto the carbon nanotube and reconnect. Researchers then add an outer polymer layer. The work describes a possible way to manage nanotube bundling, not a commercial product or a demonstrated application in electronics or medicine.

Why put a sheath around a carbon nanotube?

Carbon nanotubes are rolled sheets of carbon valued in research for their mechanical, optical and electrical properties. They also naturally bundle, bringing neighboring tubes into contact. A coating or sheath could help keep them apart and provide a surface that supports transmission, but the Chemistry World report describes existing polymer-sheathing strategies as complicated and unreliable.

The reported alternative uses a second nanotube material as an intermediate layer between the carbon nanotube and an outer polymer coating. Its assembly method avoids trying to insert a carbon nanotube into a fully formed tube of the second material.

How the self-threading assembly works

1. Ultrasound breaks up the NDI-Bola nanotubes

The researchers used nanotubes made from naphthalenediimide-lysine, abbreviated NDI-Bola. According to Chemistry World’s 2019 report, ultrasound breaks these preformed structures into short, ring-like sections.

#1 Best Overall
Conductive Carbon Nanotube Film Sheet, High Strength Nanotube Fabric(100x100mm)
  • Exceptional electrical conductivity from 0.8 to 3 x 10^5 S/m enables reliable performance in electronic circuits, sensors, and devices.
  • Ultra-low metal content below 5% minimizes risks, making this film suitable for high-purity research and electrochemical applications.
  • Mechanical strength of 60-100 MPa provides robust structural integrity, resisting tears and deformation under demanding operational conditions.
  • Customizable dimensions and configurations allow precise integration into prototypes, components, EMI shielding, or composite layups.
  • Compatible with standard lab equipment and fabrication processes, ideal for R&D in storage, flexible electronics, and material science.

2. The sections thread onto the carbon nanotube

The NDI-Bola sections thread onto the carbon nanotube. The report explains that cations on the inner surface of an NDI-Bola nanotube attract the carbon nanotube’s π electrons, a feature that makes the material promising for forming a sheath.

3. The sections reconnect into a sheath

After threading, the sections reconnect around the carbon nanotube to form what the report describes as a robust sheath. The account does not give a numerical measure of coverage, strength or durability.

Conductive Carbon Nanotube Film Sheet, High Strength Nanotube Fabric(150x150mm)
  • Exceptional electrical conductivity from 0.8 to 3 x 10^5 S/m enables reliable performance in electronic circuits, sensors, and devices.
  • Ultra-low metal content below 5% minimizes risks, making this film suitable for high-purity research and electrochemical applications.
  • Mechanical strength of 60-100 MPa provides robust structural integrity, resisting tears and deformation under demanding operational conditions.
  • Customizable dimensions and configurations allow precise integration into prototypes, components, EMI shielding, or composite layups.
  • Compatible with standard lab equipment and fabrication processes, ideal for R&D in storage, flexible electronics, and material science.

4. An outer polymer layer is added

Researchers then add a polymer layer outside the NDI-Bola sheath. The report says this polymer adheres more securely to the NDI-Bola material than to bare carbon nanotubes. It does not provide comparative measurements, so that reported adhesion should not be read as proof of measured overall superiority to other coating methods.

What the report establishes—and what it does not

The report identifies a research team at Ohio State University and the University of Akron, led by Jon Parquette, and cites a 2019 paper by M. Ji and coauthors in Chemical Science (DOI: 10.1039/c9sc02313e). The account supports the assembly sequence and the reported polymer-adhesion observation; it does not establish quantitative performance data or detailed experimental conditions.

Conductive Carbon Nanotube Film Sheet, High Strength Nanotube Fabric(300x300mm)
  • Exceptional electrical conductivity from 0.8 to 3 x 10^5 S/m enables reliable performance in electronic circuits, sensors, and devices.
  • Ultra-low metal content below 5% minimizes risks, making this film suitable for high-purity research and electrochemical applications.
  • Mechanical strength of 60-100 MPa provides robust structural integrity, resisting tears and deformation under demanding operational conditions.
  • Customizable dimensions and configurations allow precise integration into prototypes, components, EMI shielding, or composite layups.
  • Compatible with standard lab equipment and fabrication processes, ideal for R&D in storage, flexible electronics, and material science.

Electronics and medicine are presented as hoped-for areas of use, not as validated applications. The report does not establish a commercial product, manufacturing readiness, or demonstrated performance in a device or medical setting. It also offers no controlled numerical comparison for coating coverage, stability, conductivity, yield or durability. The finding is therefore best understood as a reported materials-chemistry approach rather than evidence that the sheath is already a practical solution for those fields.
