Droplets can travel uphill and even upside down when a specially prepared, water- and oil-repelling surface guides them. A 2019 report described a fluorinated porous silicon dioxide surface programmed with water; the researchers proposed that surface-charge gradients propelled the droplets, though the molecular mechanism remained under debate.
How the surface guided droplets
The research team from China and Germany made a superamphiphobic material from fluorinated porous silicon dioxide. “Superamphiphobic” means the surface repels both water and oil. Rather than relying on gravity to move a droplet downhill, the surface was prepared to direct droplets along selected paths.
According to Chemistry World’s 2019 report, the researchers programmed the surface by dripping water onto it from increasing heights. The authors proposed that the water created negatively charged defects in silicon oxide. A resulting gradient in surface charge density was thought to propel and steer droplets. The report notes that the microscopic mechanism was still under debate, so this explanation should be treated as a proposed account, not a settled conclusion.

The report describes water, blood, glycerol and aniline droplets moving in circles, across flexible surfaces, up vertical slopes and upside down. The different paths show that the surface’s effect was not limited to a flat, horizontal track.

Chemistry World reported two headline comparisons:
- Speed: droplets reached speeds 10 times higher than drops propelled by the Leidenfrost effect, according to the 2019 report.
- Distance: droplets traveled almost 100 times their own diameter when the researchers alternated patches with and without a charge gradient.
These figures are reported by Chemistry World. Its account does not establish the precise measurement definitions, experimental conditions or uncertainty behind the comparisons, so they should not be read as universal performance guarantees.
A small cargo-carrying demonstration
The researchers also made a device by balancing a plastic sheet on four droplet wheels. The report says the droplets moved this cargo-carrying device across the surface without additional energy input. It was a research demonstration, not evidence of a commercially available transport technology.

Potential uses—and what remains unproven
The report identifies microfluidics and water harvesting as possible application areas. These are prospective uses, not deployed products or established applications. The work shows a way to direct droplets on a specially prepared material; it does not establish that ordinary water-repellent coatings can do the same. The surface described was fluorinated porous silicon dioxide, not a generic consumer spray.
