A research-stage fibre modeled on polar-bear hair showed striking stretch and insulation results in laboratory demonstrations, including a knitted sweater reported to provide warmth comparable to a down jacket at one-fifth the thickness in a −20°C test. It is not polar-bear fur, and the evidence does not establish that consumer garments made from it are available. The main hurdle is making the fibre at textile-industry scale.

What is polar-bear-inspired fabric?

It is a synthetic textile material designed around the structure of polar-bear hair, not fabric made from bear fur. A 2023 study reported an encapsulated aerogel fibre (EAF) with a porous chitosan core and a thin thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) outer layer. The core is intended to trap air for insulation; the coating adds strength and protects the porous material. Chemistry World described the core porosity as tunable.

The reported process freeze-spins a chitosan solution into continuous fibres, freeze-dries the core, then coats it with TPU. This biomimetic approach takes inspiration from the hollow interior and denser outer structure of polar-bear hair. The fibre’s performance comes from its engineered composite structure, rather than from any natural fur in the material. Chemistry World’s 2024 report describes the work and its reported demonstrations.

What did the fibre demonstrate?

The reported results are promising, but they describe research prototypes and specific demonstrations—not guaranteed performance for commercial clothing.

Hiwowsport Aerogel Insulation Hydrophobic Mat of High Temp. Blanket 12''x12'',Thickness 10MM
  • Aerogel Insulation Hydrophobic Mat of High Temp.
  • The mat is made of high quality aerogel, size: 12’’x12’’, thickness:10mm(3/8inch)
  • This version of Spaceloft aerogel is great for Cryogenic temperatures of -328°F to 1200°F
  • Unless it is rated for high temperature, don't go putting a torch to your Aerogel
  • It is Hydrophobic, which means it will not absorb water. So, moisture from condensation is not a problem.
  • Stretch and recovery: Chemistry World reported that the fibres returned to their original length after being stretched to 1,000% strain.
  • Strength demonstration: A single fibre 500 μm wide reportedly lifted a 500 g weight.
  • Warmth: A knitted prototype sweater was reported to provide warmth comparable to a down jacket at one-fifth the thickness in a −20°C test. That comparison does not establish equivalent warmth across other garment designs, conditions or use.
  • Washing: The prototype garment reportedly showed no degradation after one conventional machine-wash cycle. The report does not establish how it holds up after repeated laundering.

Materials chemist Shengjie Ling, who was not involved in the EAF research, described washable and dyeable stretchable aerogel fibres as having transformative potential for textiles. That is an expert assessment of promise, not evidence that the material has reached the market. The detailed performance figures above are reported by Chemistry World from the 2023 study; exact test protocols are not provided in that account.

Is it warmer than down?

The available comparison is narrower than that question suggests. Chemistry World reported that the EAF prototype sweater matched a down jacket’s warmth at one-fifth the thickness in a −20°C test. It does not establish that EAF is universally warmer than down, or that a future EAF garment would outperform any particular down jacket. A fair comparison would also need to account for garment construction, weight, test conditions, repeated use and wash durability.

Can you buy clothes made from it?

The reporting describes research demonstrations and manufacturing challenges, but does not establish that EAF consumer garments are on sale. No retail garment or manufacturing partner is identified in the sources cited here. Treat the fibre as a research-stage material, not as an insulation option you can currently shop for.

Why is production difficult?

The reported scale-up gap is substantial. Materials scientist Xuetong Zhang contrasted aerogel-fibre wet spinning at about 20 metres per minute with traditional fibre production at up to 5,000 metres per minute. These figures illustrate the gap discussed in the report; they are not a current survey of every textile process.

Aerogel Insulation Felt Heat and Waterproof 650 Degree High Temperature Flame Retardant Material(W 10cm x l 10cm,Thickness 6mm)
  • Forms a protective barrier to isolate high-temperature conditions and maintain stable surrounding environments.
  • Resists deformation under continuous exposure to extreme thermal conditions.
  • Can be cut and shaped easily to fit different installation requirements.
  • Reduces heat transfer and helps preserve consistent working temperatures.
  • Works reliably in various thermal management scenarios and supports long-term usage.

There is also a process-integration challenge: continuous spinning and batch drying have been established for aerogel fibres, but Zhang said a feasible way to connect them into a fully continuous process remains elusive. That means impressive laboratory properties alone do not show that the material can be made reliably, economically and at the volume needed for mass-market clothing.

How this differs from the earlier polar-bear-inspired aerogel

The EAF textile is distinct from a 2019 USTC material made from hollow carbon tubes assembled into an aerogel. That earlier work focused on a super-elastic, thermally insulating carbon-tube aerogel, with applications framed to include architecture and aerospace; it was not the chitosan/TPU fibre used in the later knitted textile prototype. The USTC publication record identifies the paper as “Biomimetic carbon tube aerogel enables super-elasticity and thermal insulation,” published in Chem 5(7), pages 1871–1882, DOI 10.1016/j.chempr.2019.04.025. USTC’s publication record and a Cell Press release carried by EurekAlert! describe that earlier research.

  • MAX version for professional use in industry. Highest thermal insulation performance among roVa Flex lineup.
  • FLEXIBLE & NON-STICK - Highly flexible and soft for easy cutting and form fitting. No adhesive Backing. Adhesive applied separately (not included)
  • 2 Count - Includes 2 rolls of white insulation tape, measuring 1" x 47.2" (2.5cm x 120cm) and a thickness of 0.04” (1mm).
  • HOT/COLD INSULATION - Insulates against both hot and cold conditions. Operating temperature range from -58F to +248F (-50C to +120C).
  • ADDITIONAL FEATURES - Protects agains water and moisture, especially from condensation. Dampens sound and vibration by absorbing energy. Very low Relative Permittivity (dielectric constant).

The 2019 work provides historical context for biomimetic insulation, but its material and use cases should not be confused with the wearable EAF prototype.
