In a 2014 laboratory study, researchers used copper made from copper(I) oxide (Cu2O) to electrochemically convert carbon monoxide (CO) into oxygenates including ethanol, acetate, and n-propanol. The reported maximum was up to 57% Faradaic efficiency under the study’s specific conditions. The experiment converted CO—not CO2 directly—and did not demonstrate a complete fuel-production system.
What the copper experiment produced
Christina W. Li, Jim Ciston, and Matthew W. Kanan reported their findings in a Nature research letter published online on 9 April 2014. They tested oxide-derived nanocrystalline copper in an electrochemical cell supplied with CO-saturated alkaline water. The products included the multi-carbon oxygenates ethanol, acetate, and n-propanol; ethanol was the major oxygenate.
The paper reported up to 57% Faradaic efficiency for those oxygenates over potentials from −0.25 to −0.5 volts versus the reversible hydrogen electrode. Faradaic efficiency describes the share of electrical charge attributed to a particular product. The “up to” figure is a result under the paper’s laboratory conditions, not a guaranteed yield or a general performance rating.

How oxide-derived copper differed from the comparison
The researchers prepared the catalyst from copper(I) oxide (Cu2O). They proposed that the oxide’s constrained lattice produced interconnected nanocrystallites as the material became copper. In their comparison, copper nanoparticles made by vapour condensation had a similar average crystallite size but produced nearly exclusively hydrogen under the same conditions; the paper reports hydrogen at 96% Faradaic efficiency for that comparator.
#1 Best Overall
- Electrochemical sensor technology detects CO gas
- Easy installation, no wiring needed, detects during a power failure by operating on 2-AA batteries (included); Install on a wall of your home or place on a tabletop
- Green LED indicates power to the carbon monoxide detector, while an 85-decibel alarm & a red LED indicates the presence of carbon monoxide
- Event Memory records the last time carbon monoxide was detected or when the unit was last tested
This contrast points to preparation and resulting material structure as important to the reported product selectivity. It does not show that particle size alone determines the outcome, nor that all oxide-derived copper samples will behave identically.
Where CO fits in a proposed CO2-to-fuel route
The study addressed the second step of a proposed two-step pathway: first convert CO2 into CO, then use water as a proton source to reduce that CO into fuel chemicals. Li, Ciston, and Kanan tested the CO-to-products step. Their experiment should therefore be understood as evidence for one possible stage of a route that could be powered by renewable electricity—not as a demonstration that the researchers converted CO2 directly into fuel.

- Features an advanced electrochemical carbon monoxide sensor that accurately detects carbon monoxide levels, no matter where the detector is placed in the room
- Simple to use, with a single test/silence button; a loud 85 decibel alarm sounds when Carbon Monoxide levels reach dangerous levels. Low battery signal mute, quiets low battery signal for upto 8 hours
- To ensure complete protection make sure to place one on each level of your home and in each bedroom
- 7 year limited warranty; Equipped with end of life signal chirp, so you know when it’s time to replace the unit for safety
What the result does—and does not—establish
The finding is a laboratory electrolysis result showing that this prepared copper catalyst could favor multi-carbon oxygenates from CO under the reported conditions. Product selectivity and Faradaic efficiency alone do not establish whether a process is practical as a complete energy system.
