Use sun protection whenever the UV Index is 3 or higher. Check the local forecast, then combine shade, covering clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, UV-protective sunglasses, and sunscreen on exposed skin. Sunscreen is one layer of protection—not a reason to stay in the sun longer.
What UV index means you need sun protection?
The UV Index forecasts the strength of ultraviolet radiation expected at a particular place and time. The World Health Organization recommends protection at an index of 3 or above. On the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency scale, 1–2 is low, 3–7 ranges from moderate to high, and 8 or higher is very high to extreme. Increase protection as the index rises, and check the local forecast because UV levels vary by location and time.
Even when the index is low, you can still choose protective clothing, shade, and sunglasses as practical precautions. The UV Index is a guide to intensity, not a guarantee that exposure below a particular value is harmless.

How do I protect myself from UV in sunlight?
Use multiple measures together rather than relying on sunscreen alone. WHO says protection is best achieved by seeking shade and wearing clothes. Shade can reduce direct exposure, while clothing and accessories cover skin and eyes; sunscreen helps protect the skin that remains uncovered.

- Seek shade: Choose shade when UV is strong, while remembering that it is one part of a combined approach.
- Cover your skin: Lightweight long sleeves and pants reduce the amount of skin exposed. UPF-labeled clothing can help identify garments intended to provide UV protection.
- Cover your head and face: A wide-brimmed hat provides more coverage than leaving these areas exposed.
- Protect your eyes: Look for sunglasses labeled to protect against UVA and UVB. WHO specifies wraparound sunglasses with 99–100% UVA and UVB protection.
- Apply sunscreen to uncovered skin: Use it as an additional layer alongside shade and clothing.
How to choose sunscreen
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends sunscreen that is broad-spectrum, water resistant, and SPF 30 or higher. Broad-spectrum means the product protects against both UVA and UVB radiation. SPF principally indicates protection against sunburn, which is mainly associated with UVB; no sunscreen blocks all UVB.

- Before going outdoors, apply sunscreen generously to the skin not covered by clothing.
- Use enough: The AAD says most adults need about one ounce to cover exposed skin.
- Cover commonly missed areas, including ears, neck, and feet, as well as other uncovered skin.
- Reapply every two hours and immediately after swimming or sweating.
Do not use sunscreen to extend your time in the sun. Keep using shade and clothing even when sunscreen is applied.

Why UV protection matters
Ultraviolet exposure can harm skin and eyes. The WHO’s 2022 fact sheet reports that more than 1.5 million skin cancer cases were diagnosed globally in 2020 and more than 120,000 skin cancer-associated deaths occurred that year. The WHO also estimates that about 10% of the 15 million people globally who are blind due to cataracts may have cataract blindness attributable to UV exposure. These figures describe global burden; they do not predict an individual’s risk.
For U.S. readers, the AAD states that about one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. That estimate is specific to the United States and is not an individual diagnosis or forecast.
