Earth’s water most likely has more than one source. Water-bearing rocky bodies, especially material resembling carbonaceous chondrites, have strong isotopic support as a major contributor. Comets could have supplied some water, while a 2018 model proposes that a small amount of hydrogen came from the solar nebula. After arriving or being retained inside the planet, water and hydrogen moved through Earth’s interior; volcanic outgassing helped bring water to the surface. No established measurement assigns exact shares to these sources.

Why Earth’s water needs more than one explanation

Earth formed in the hot inner Solar System, where water at the surface was difficult to retain. Explaining today’s oceans therefore involves several questions: what supplied hydrogen and water, how that material reached Earth’s growing body, what survived heat and impacts, and how water stored inside the planet later reached the surface.

These are connected but distinct processes. A source can contribute hydrogen during formation without directly delivering an ocean. And volcanic outgassing can transfer water from Earth’s interior to its surface without identifying where that hydrogen originally came from.

What isotope measurements can—and cannot—tell us

One useful comparison is the ratio of deuterium to ordinary hydrogen, written D/H. Deuterium is a heavier form of hydrogen. NASA explains that it can be more concentrated in water formed in cold environments, so D/H measurements help compare Earth’s water with water in meteorites and comets.

NASA Science gives the ocean ratio as about one deuterium atom for every 6,420 hydrogen atoms. A similar D/H value in another object can support a connection, but it is not a unique fingerprint: ratios vary among comets, and chemical processes in the early Solar System’s disk complicate inferences about where a body formed. The 2019 review of water’s origins likewise cautions that D/H alone cannot uniquely identify a source. Other isotope evidence and plausible transport pathways also matter.

How the main origin scenarios compare

Possible source or process What supports it What remains uncertain
Water-bearing asteroids and carbonaceous-chondrite-like material Their bound water has D/H values reasonably close to terrestrial water, and dynamical models offer ways for material from farther out in the Solar System to reach the terrestrial planets. An isotope similarity does not prove that sampled meteorites represent the exact source population, identify one parent asteroid or delivery event, or determine how much material arrived.
Comets Some Jupiter-family comets have measured D/H values similar to Earth’s, making a cometary contribution plausible. Comet measurements differ. The result for one comet cannot establish that comets supplied most of Earth’s water—or rule out contributions from other comets.
Hydrogen from the solar nebula A 2018 model proposes that hydrogen gas dissolved in Earth’s magma ocean, reacted with iron and was partly stored in the core. The estimate depends on the model. It is not a direct measurement of nebular hydrogen in the oceans or evidence that nebular gas supplied most surface water.
Earth’s interior and volcanic outgassing Volcanic vapor can vent to the surface and condense as rain. Hydrogen may also remain in mantle and core reservoirs. Outgassing explains how water can reach the surface, not by itself where the hydrogen originally came from. The planet’s total water inventory is not the same as its ocean inventory.

Why water-bearing rocky bodies lead the evidence

Carbonaceous chondrites are meteorites rich in water-bearing minerals and other volatile material. Their water’s D/H values are reasonably close to the terrestrial value, making them an important analogue for the rocky material that could have contributed to Earth. The match supports a substantial rocky-body contribution, but it does not reveal whether that material arrived in a late delivery or was incorporated earlier as Earth grew.

Transport matters as much as resemblance. The 2019 review discusses dynamical routes by which hydrated, outer-Solar-System material could have reached the region where the terrestrial planets formed. At the same time, heat, impacts and accretion could remove or redistribute volatiles. A plausible source therefore has to fit both the isotope evidence and a workable history of delivery and retention.

Did comets deliver Earth’s water?

They may have delivered some, but the evidence does not establish comets as the dominant source. NASA Science reports that water measured at comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko had about three times the oceanic deuterium abundance in the comparison described there. That result is not representative of every comet: some Jupiter-family comets have D/H values closer to Earth’s.

Measurement details can also affect interpretation. NASA’s account says researchers reanalyzed more than 16,000 Rosetta measurements of 67P because dust can affect observed isotope ratios. The differing results reinforce why scientists compare multiple objects and evidence types rather than treating one comet’s ratio as a verdict on all cometary water.

What the solar-nebula model adds

In a 2018 paper, Wu and coauthors modeled hydrogen from the young Sun’s surrounding gas entering Earth’s magma ocean. In the scenario, hydrogen dissolved in the molten material, reacted with iron, and some partitioned into the core, with isotope fractionation between the core and mantle.

NASA Astrobiology’s summary of the model gives its estimate as about one in 100 of Earth’s water molecules tracing to nebular hydrogen. This is a model-dependent estimate, not a settled measurement of the ocean’s composition. The proposal adds a possible small source to the picture; it does not replace the evidence for water-bearing rocky material.

How Earth’s interior connects delivery to the oceans

Water and hydrogen did not have to remain at the surface after reaching Earth. NASA describes volcanic vapor venting and then condensing as rain, a pathway by which water in the interior could contribute to surface water. The 2018 model also discusses the possibility that the mantle and core hold hydrogen equivalent to several oceans.

That distinction changes what “Earth’s water” means. The oceans are the visible surface reservoir, but they are not necessarily the whole inventory. Water or hydrogen may be stored within the planet and exchanged with the surface over geological time; outgassing is part of that history rather than a competing original source.

What remains unresolved

  • Exact source proportions: The available evidence does not establish percentages for asteroidal, cometary and nebular contributions.
  • Which bodies represent the source: The meteorites available for study may not perfectly represent the material that built Earth.
  • When water arrived: Some hydrogen may have been inherited during Earth’s growth; the size and timing of later volatile additions remain open questions.
  • When oceans formed: A broad accretion chronology is not an ocean-formation date. A 2022 Nature Reviews Earth & Environment review estimates that more than 98% of Earth’s mass had accreted by the Moon-forming impact, approximately 70–120 million years after Solar System formation; that estimate does not date the oceans.
  • How much survived: Heating, impacts, escape and later geological cycling all affect how much water remained at the surface or within Earth.

The best-supported account is therefore a mixed-origin one: water-bearing rocky material is a major contributor, while cometary delivery and a small nebular-hydrogen contribution remain plausible parts of the story. The available isotope and geological evidence supports pathways and relationships, not a single proven source or complete delivery timeline.
