In a 2009 laboratory study, researchers detected silver(I) ions by watching gold–platinum nanowire motors move faster. An optical microscope tracked changes in motor speed or distance, making motion the sensing signal. The result was a proof of concept—not a validated water test or a commercially available detector.
How do nanomotors detect silver?
The study used bimetallic gold–platinum (Au–Pt) nanowire motors that propel themselves by catalytically decomposing hydrogen peroxide. Researchers observed the motors under an optical microscope and measured their movement. When silver(I), written Ag(I), was present, the motors showed a pronounced increase in speed. The assay therefore inferred silver from a change in motion rather than from a direct visual reading of silver itself. The original 2009 study describes optical tracking of changes in nanomotor speed.
What response did the experiment report?
Kagan and colleagues reported a concentration-dependent speed or distance signal over approximately 0.5–100 µM Ag(I) under their experimental conditions. They noted negligible concentration effect at lower concentrations. In a reported comparison at 100 µM silver, the average motor speed was 52 µm s⁻¹. These are experimental observations from that setup, not a validated routine-sample detection limit, regulatory threshold, or general performance guarantee. The paper also compared common cations at 100 µM: most of the other tested ions slowed the motors, unlike the distinctive silver response.

The authors proposed that silver ions adsorb onto the nanowire and are reduced in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, depositing silver on the motor surface and changing its catalytic behavior. They reported detecting deposited silver after exposure. They also discussed diffusiophoretic motion as a possible contributor, so the precise explanation was not settled by the experiment. The authors explicitly called for further work to understand the unusual silver effect and its concentration dependence, and to adapt the concept for practical applications. Their paper frames the result as an initial demonstration.

Can nanomotors test water for silver?
The cited study does not establish a practical water-testing device. It demonstrates a laboratory sensing approach that relies on nanomotors, hydrogen peroxide, and optical microscopy; it does not validate performance in routine environmental samples or establish field use, regulatory approval, or a ready-to-buy assay kit. An optical microscope is part of the experimental readout, not a standalone silver detector.
How was the signal later used in a DNA assay?
A separate 2010 study reused silver-triggered motor acceleration in a hybridization assay rather than directly measuring silver in a sample. Silver nanoparticle tags attached to detector probes were captured through target-DNA hybridization. Hydrogen peroxide dissolved the captured tags, releasing silver ions that accelerated nanomotors. The authors reported detection of DNA and bacterial ribosomal RNA, including 40 amol of DNA under their assay conditions. That figure belongs to this distinct tagged-hybridization setup; it is not the detection amount for the 2009 direct Ag(I) experiment. The 2010 study describes this follow-on approach.
