In a 2005 study, researchers used ultraviolet light to switch a specially designed peptide from an inactive, unfolded state into one that folds and assembles into a hydrogel. The result was a laboratory material—not a marketed wound gel or a proven medical treatment.
How does UV light make peptides form a hydrogel?
The system, called MAX7CNB, was designed with a light-sensitive chemical group, or photocage, that kept the peptide unfolded and unable to self-assemble while it was in aqueous solution. When researchers irradiated it at 260–360 nm, the light removed the photocage. The uncaged peptide could then fold into amphiphilic β-hairpins—structures with water-attracting and water-avoiding regions—and self-assemble into a hydrogel.
This is a triggered folding-and-assembly approach: light activates the peptide’s ability to organize itself. It is distinct from conventional photopolymerization approaches discussed in the paper, which may use photoinitiators and chemically functionalized macromolecular precursors. The study does not establish that either approach is clinically superior. The primary paper describes the mechanism and experimental results.

Haines and colleagues reported that a 2 wt % solution of the photocaged peptide was freely soluble and had the viscosity of water before irradiation. After the light-triggered process, the resulting hydrogel had a reported storage modulus, G′, of 1000 Pa. These figures describe this specific experimental system; they are not general specifications for peptide hydrogels.

The paper, “Light-Activated Hydrogel Formation via the Triggered Folding and Self-Assembly of a Designed Peptide,” appeared online on 10 November 2005 and in the 7 December 2005 issue of the Journal of the American Chemical Society. What did the cell tests show?
The team used laser-scanning confocal microscopy to examine NIH 3T3 fibroblasts seeded on the gel surface. In that laboratory assay, the surface was described as noncytotoxic, supportive of cell adhesion, and permissive of migration. A thymidine-incorporation assay found cell proliferation at a rate equivalent to cells seeded on a tissue-culture-treated polystyrene control surface.

Those results are limited to cells placed on the gel surface under laboratory conditions. They do not show that cells were successfully encapsulated within the gel, that the material heals wounds in people, or that it is clinically safe or effective.
Does this mean the gel is a wound treatment?
No. The contemporary Chemistry World report discussed wound treatment and tissue engineering as potential areas of relevance. It also reported that the researchers were then trying to develop a version that would allow cells to be incorporated inside the gel. The available sources establish the 2005 study and its laboratory findings, but do not establish whether this exact MAX7CNB system later entered clinical development or commercial use. The result should therefore be understood as a materials-science demonstration, not a current treatment option.
