Yes. Macroalgae can be converted into porous carbon, and a 2026 study reports micro-mesoporous activated carbons made from Sargassum spp. But “algal adsorbent” does not automatically mean “mesoporous”: the clearest macroalgae-specific evidence concerns particular carbon materials, not every seaweed-based adsorbent or every type of mesoporous material.
What makes a material mesoporous?
Mesoporous materials are conventionally defined by pores 2–50 nm in diameter, according to a 2024 review of mesoporous materials. A material can contain pores in this range alongside smaller micropores or larger pores. That distinction matters for activated carbon: calling a sample “micro-mesoporous” means it has both microporous and mesoporous structure, not that every pore is between 2 and 50 nm.
Pore size is only one way to describe a material. Specific surface area, pore-size distribution, surface chemistry and the way the material is shaped or recovered also matter when evaluating an adsorbent. A high surface-area figure alone does not establish how well a material will remove a particular contaminant.

Sargassum-derived activated carbon
A 2026 paper in Desalination and Water Treatment reports micro-mesoporous activated carbons prepared from Sargassum spp. The study gives specific surface areas from 315.43 to 1382.20 m²/g and reports that preparation factors affect the carbons’ physical properties. The indexed information available for the paper does not specify the measurement method, the settings associated with each value, or the samples’ pore-size distributions, so the range should not be used to rank particular preparations or predict contaminant-removal performance. Other algal adsorbents and seaweed-derived carbon
A 2022 review covers engineered macroalgal and microalgal adsorbents—including hydrochar, biochar and activated carbon—for adsorption of hazardous water contaminants. Its scope is broader than mesoporous carbon, and it includes microalgae as well as macroalgae; it should not be read as evidence that every material it discusses is mesoporous. See the review of algal adsorbents for hazardous water contaminants.
A 2021 Green Chemistry review discusses porous carbon made by carbonizing seaweed-derived materials such as carrageenan, chitosan and alginate, including water-purification applications. This is evidence for a wider seaweed-derived carbon research area, not proof that every seaweed component or resulting carbon has a measured mesoporous structure. How should these material types be distinguished?
| Material or evidence category | What is reported | What the evidence does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Sargassum-derived activated carbon | A 2026 study reports micro-mesoporous activated carbons and a specific-surface-area range of 315.43–1382.20 m²/g. | The available indexed information does not give pore-size distributions, measurement details, preparation settings for each value, or a performance ranking. |
| Macroalgal and microalgal adsorbents | A 2022 review covers hydrochar, biochar, activated carbon and other engineered adsorbents for hazardous-water-contaminant adsorption. | The broad category “algal adsorbent” does not imply that each material is mesoporous or made from macroalgae. |
| Seaweed-derived porous carbon | A 2021 review discusses carbonization of seaweed-derived carrageenan, chitosan and alginate, including water-purification applications. | The cited review’s general discussion does not establish that every feedstock or carbon product has a measured mesopore structure. |
The categories overlap, but they are not interchangeable. Macroalgae names the feedstock group; activated carbon, biochar and hydrochar describe material types or processing outcomes; and mesoporous describes a pore-size range. A claim about one of these properties does not by itself prove the others.

How are macroalgae turned into mesoporous materials?
The macroalgae-specific example in the available evidence is activated carbon from Sargassum. More generally, reviews of mesoporous-material synthesis describe families of methods including hydrothermal and microwave synthesis, sol-gel processing, phase conversion, and hard- or soft-template-assisted routes. These are broad methods used across mesoporous-material research; their appearance in general reviews is not a verified recipe for converting a particular macroalga into a particular product. Kausar et al.’s 2024 review and Li et al.’s 2023 mini-review discuss the wider synthesis field.

- Product name: Monodisperse Mesoporous Silica Nanosphere Stellate MSN
- Average Size:80 nm
- Pore volume:~1.4 mL/g
- Pore Size (conical pores of the stellate MSNs):2.9 nm
- Applications:It can be used in coatings, catalysts, chromatographic fillers and high-performance ceramics.
For a reproducible macroalgae-derived material, the useful details would include the species and starting material, pretreatment, carbonization or other conversion route, activation or templating steps, and measurements of pore structure and surface area. The cited indexed information does not supply a complete protocol for the Sargassum study, so temperatures, chemicals, yields and scale-up conditions should not be inferred from its reported surface-area range.
What applications are best supported?
Adsorption and water purification are the strongest application themes in the macroalgae-focused sources. The 2022 review addresses algal adsorbents for hazardous water contaminants, while the 2021 review discusses seaweed-derived porous carbon in water-purification contexts. These reviews establish research activity in those areas; they do not, by themselves, show that a material is commercially ready or superior to a conventional adsorbent.

A 2020 review examines activated-carbon composites in which alginate, chitosan and related macromolecules immobilize the carbon for water-contaminant removal. It also identifies a gap in column experiments. Immobilizing carbon in a composite is a related adsorbent design approach, but it does not demonstrate that the composite is made from macroalgae or that it has mesoporous structure. Read the review of macromolecule-immobilized activated-carbon composites.
Mesoporous materials generally are also studied for areas such as energy storage, photocatalysis, water splitting, sensing and desalination, as summarized in the 2024 review. Those broad application areas should not be presented as demonstrated uses of macroalgae-derived mesoporous materials unless a specific macroalgal study supports the claim.

How can two candidate materials be compared fairly?
There is no universal best macroalgae-derived adsorbent established by the sources above. A meaningful comparison needs to hold the target use in view and report enough detail to interpret the result. Check for:
- Feedstock: the macroalgal species, source material and pretreatment.
- Conversion route: the reported carbonization, activation or other synthesis steps.
- Pore structure: micro- and mesopore distribution, not just a label such as “porous.”
- Surface-area measurement: the value and method used to obtain it.
- Adsorption conditions: target contaminant, water chemistry and experimental conditions, alongside the reported adsorption capacity.
- Practical handling: regeneration or reuse results, material form and how it is recovered from water.
- Deployment evidence: cost, scale and relevant continuous-flow or column testing, where reported.
Without these details, a surface-area value or broad material label cannot settle which adsorbent is better for a real treatment task.
