Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. trades its original shares on the Korea Exchange (KRX): common shares use ticker 005930 and preferred shares use 005935. It also has London-listed global depositary receipts (GDRs): SMSN for common shares and SMSD for preferred shares. These are different instruments on different markets, so which one you can trade depends on your broker and where you live.
Samsung Electronics listings and ticker symbols
“Samsung stock” can refer to companies across the wider Samsung group. The symbols below are for Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the company addressed here.

Samsung Electronics identifies KRX as the venue for its original shares and lists both GDRs on the LSE in its stock information. The LSE describes SMSN as a GDR representing 25 Samsung Electronics common shares; the reviewed exchange information does not establish the representation ratio for preferred GDR SMSD. How the Korean shares and London GDRs differ
A GDR is a depositary receipt traded outside the market where the underlying shares are listed. Thus, SMSN and SMSD are not the same instruments as KRX tickers 005930 and 005935, even though they provide exposure to Samsung Electronics shares. The confirmed 25-to-1 ratio applies to SMSN only; it should not be assumed for SMSD.

Samsung reported 6,648,649,811 shares outstanding at the end of Q2 2026: 5,846,278,608 common and 802,371,203 preferred. These are issuer-reported, dated totals, not live trading figures. Common and preferred are separate share classes, and their symbols should not be interchanged.
Can you buy Samsung Electronics shares from outside South Korea?
Samsung’s investor guidance describes two routes for foreign investors: trading the company’s LSE GDRs through eligible securities firms, or seeking direct KRX access through a Korean securities-firm account and the required registration steps. Its How to Buy Stock guidance says that U.S. residents are prohibited from trading the GDRs covered by that guidance. Rules and broker offerings can change, so treat this as Samsung’s stated guidance rather than a determination of your individual eligibility.

Samsung’s investor FAQ also describes direct KRX purchases through a Korean securities-firm account and registration steps. Before placing an order, ask your broker whether it supports the particular ticker and share class for your residence, and confirm applicable restrictions, account requirements, fees, and currency-conversion costs. The issuer’s descriptions do not guarantee that a specific broker offers either route.

How to identify the right Samsung ticker
- Confirm that you mean Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., rather than another company in the Samsung group.
- Choose the share class: common or preferred.
- Check the market and instrument your brokerage account supports: KRX original shares (005930 or 005935) or LSE GDRs (SMSN or SMSD).
- Confirm the symbol with your broker and Samsung’s current stock information before trading; ticker availability and eligibility may vary by jurisdiction and provider.
