Eclipse Temurin is Adoptium’s name for its open-source Java Development Kit (JDK) binaries. You can obtain the builds through the official releases page and install them using a package manager, platform installer, archive, container, or development workflow. Adoptium says Temurin releases pass Java compatibility and quality checks; those checks are evidence of validation, not a guarantee that every application will work without issues.
“HotSpot” appears in the title, but the Adoptium pages cited here do not explain the JVM implementation or compare it with other Java virtual machines. This guide focuses on what those sources establish about Temurin, installation, validation, and support horizons.
What is Eclipse Temurin?
Eclipse Temurin is the distribution name Adoptium uses for its JDK binaries. A JDK includes the Java runtime and development tools used to build and run Java applications. Adoptium describes Temurin as open-source Java runtime binaries available across platforms. Its FAQ directs readers to the latest releases page for recommended builds.
The releases catalog lets you select a Java version, operating system, CPU architecture, and JDK or JRE package where available. Check those selections against your application’s requirements rather than choosing solely by the newest version.
What does “HotSpot” mean here?
The available Adoptium pages do not substantively explain HotSpot’s internals, establish how a particular Temurin build relates to the HotSpot implementation, or compare HotSpot with other JVMs. The installation page’s use of a HotSpot filter is not enough to support a deeper technical explanation. For this reason, “HotSpot” should not be taken here as a claim about performance or compatibility relative to another JVM.
How does Adoptium validate Temurin?
Adoptium says each Temurin release passes the relevant Oracle Java Compatibility Kit (JCK), which it describes as demonstrating compatibility with the Java specification. It also says releases must pass AQAvit, a verification suite whose checks cover performance, security, resilience, endurance, and application compatibility. These are Adoptium’s descriptions of its release checks—not a guarantee that every program, environment, or configuration will be free of defects.

Where can you download or install Temurin?
Adoptium recommends package managers for most systems and documents several other ways to obtain and use Temurin. The best route depends on the operating system, CPU architecture, and whether you are setting up a personal machine, a server, a container, or a CI/CD pipeline.
- Package managers: A convenient choice for systems where Adoptium provides a supported package-manager route.
- Platform installers: The installation page lists Linux RPM, DEB, and APK packages, macOS PKG installers, and Windows MSI installers.
- Archives: Useful when you need to manage the extracted installation yourself.
- Containers: Official container images provide a route for container-based workloads.
- API and automation: Adoptium offers a programmatic API and documents GitHub Actions setup-java and other CI/CD integrations.
For current commands and platform-specific instructions, use Adoptium’s installation guide. To select a particular build, use the release catalog; available choices can change over time.
How to choose a Temurin build
Before installing, confirm the requirements that determine which download is appropriate:
- Check the application’s Java feature-version requirement. An application may require a particular Java version or support only a defined range.
- Match your platform. Select the operating system and CPU architecture that match the target machine.
- Choose JDK or JRE based on the task. Use a JDK when development tools are needed; check whether the application or deployment environment calls for a JRE package.
- Select an installation route. Use a package manager for a managed system install, an installer or archive for a local setup, a container for containerized workloads, or a documented CI/CD integration for automated builds.
- Consider the support horizon. If you need a longer maintenance window, check Adoptium’s current roadmap for the version you intend to use.
How long are Temurin releases supported?
Adoptium’s roadmap describes a six-month feature-release cadence and maintenance and security updates for active releases every three months, normally aligned with upstream OpenJDK’s quarterly schedule. Since 2021, Adoptium says one feature release every two years has been designated long-term support (LTS), with LTS releases supported for at least four years.
Rank #4
These intervals describe Adoptium’s published release and support approach; they are not fixed end dates for every version. The roadmap distinguishes “at least” availability estimates from fixed end dates, and its version-specific rows can change. Check the current support roadmap before selecting a version based on its expected availability.
What support does Adoptium provide?
Adoptium describes community support in which issues are triaged through its community. It does not itself provide commercial support, according to its support information; organizations that require a service-level agreement (SLA) are directed to companies that offer contracted Temurin support. Community issue triage and an SLA-backed commercial arrangement are different support models, so confirm the provider’s scope and terms if a contract is necessary.
