To change the sound you are hearing, start audio playback and adjust the active media volume. If the result is still too quiet—or the wrong sound changes—check the app, system, output device, and any physical speaker controls separately. The right control depends on what is playing and which device is producing it.
First, identify which volume you need to change
Devices may have separate levels for media, calls, alerts, system sounds, accessibility speech, and individual apps. There can also be a separate volume control on the speaker or headphones themselves. A volume button may adjust a different level depending on whether audio is playing.
- Media: music, video, games, and other app audio.
- Ringer and alerts: incoming calls, notifications, and alert sounds.
- App or system: an individual program may be quiet even when the device’s main level is high.
- Accessibility speech: spoken navigation, such as TalkBack, can have its own settings.
- Output hardware: headphones or speakers may have their own controls, and the device may be sending sound to the wrong output.
For a quick, reliable test, play the affected audio while adjusting volume in small steps. This helps ensure you are changing media volume rather than an idle-state ringer or alert setting.

Adjust volume on an iPhone
While audio is playing, use the iPhone side buttons to change media volume. When no audio is playing, those buttons change ringer and alert volume instead, unless that behavior is locked in settings. You can also open Control Center and adjust its volume slider. Apple describes these controls in its iPhone volume guide.

Audio ducking lowers other audio while TalkBack speaks, making spoken feedback easier to hear. TalkBack sound feedback is set by default to 50% of speech volume; its choices include matching speech or using 75%, 50%, or 25%. These percentages apply to TalkBack’s sound-feedback setting, not to a universal Android volume scale.

Check headphone levels and reduce loud audio on iPhone
iPhone can show headphone audio levels through the Hearing control in Control Center and provide listening history in Health. It can also notify you after loud headphone listening and lower future headphone playback using Reduce Loud Audio. Find the current controls in Apple’s headphone audio levels guide.
Headphone measurements are most accurate with Apple or Beats headphones and may be estimates with other headphones. Notification behavior can vary by country or region. A slider percentage is not a universal decibel reading: actual loudness depends on the output hardware and headphones, so do not infer a specific sound level or safe listening duration from the slider alone.
