For audience ambience in a recording or broadcast, start with one or two flat-response cardioid condenser microphones above and somewhat in front of the audience, aimed at faces and away from the main PA loudspeakers as much as the room allows. Record them on separate channels and blend them into the program as needed. Crowd mics capture the room’s collective energy; they are not a dependable way to make one audience member’s question intelligible.

Choose the right goal: ambience or audience speech

A crowd microphone is a production channel for applause, singing, laughter, and the overall sense of a live room. It is intended to be blended into a recording or broadcast, not used as a distant substitute for a microphone close to an individual speaker.

Crowd mics are for atmosphere. Audience Q&A needs a close mic. If a question must be heard clearly in the venue or on a remote feed, use a dedicated Q&A stand or have a moderator pass a wireless microphone to the person. Shure’s congregation guidance cautions against using distant microphones to amplify an individual through the main PA; its conference guidance also recommends close pickup for audience questions.

Where to place crowd microphones

Start above and in front of the audience

For a simple setup, use one microphone for mono ambience or two for stereo. Place them above and somewhat in front of the audience so they have a clear view of people’s faces. Aim toward the audience and away from the main PA loudspeakers as much as the venue permits. Shure recommends a flat-response cardioid condenser for this role.

There is no universal mounting height or audience distance established by the cited guidance. Treat the position as a starting point: listen to the result in the actual room, assess how much PA spill and room sound enter the microphones, then adjust. Stage layout, sightlines, available mounting points, and the loudspeakers’ coverage all affect the practical position.

Preserve stereo orientation

If using a pair, keep the left and right microphones correctly oriented in both recording and monitoring: sound from the left side of the room should map to the left channel. This makes the audience image more consistent between the room and the final mix.

Manage multiple open microphones

Every additional open microphone can add noise and another opportunity for feedback in a reinforced room. Use only as many microphones and as much gain as the capture goal requires. Shure’s conference guide gives the three-to-one spacing rule as a starting point for multiple open microphones: spacing between open microphones should be at least three times the distance from each microphone to its nearest talker. It is not a guarantee against feedback, nor a crowd-mic height rule. Where a microphone is only needed at certain moments, activating it only when in use can reduce the number of open mics.

Keep the crowd feed out of the house PA

Route crowd microphones to their own recording or broadcast channels, not into the main PA mix. An overhead microphone is relatively far from an individual voice, so turning it up to reinforce a question can produce poor intelligibility and increase feedback risk. Use a close Q&A microphone when speech needs reinforcement.

Separate channels also let the operator decide how much audience sound belongs in each part of the program without changing the close stage microphones. Shure describes keeping audience ambience lower beneath spoken presentation and raising it for musical sections, especially group singing. That is an example of a mix decision, not a fixed level recipe.

Set up and mix for the actual room

  1. Choose the capture area. Decide whether the priority is the whole audience or a particular section, then choose a position with a clear view of that area.
  2. Place and aim the microphones. Begin above and somewhat in front of the audience, facing people and avoiding direct aim at the main PA loudspeakers where possible.
  3. Route each microphone separately. Keep crowd channels independent from the stage mix and do not send ambience microphones to the house PA.
  4. Check the recording position. Listen for PA spill, strong room reflections, steady HVAC noise, cable handling, outdoor wind, and anything blocking the audience-facing pickup.
  5. Confirm stereo and level. For a pair, check left/right orientation. Set only enough gain for the recording or broadcast purpose, then listen again during both speech and musical sections.
  6. Blend during the program. Adjust the audience channels independently so ambience supports the material without masking spoken content.

The cited guidance establishes placement and routing principles, but does not prescribe a universal EQ curve, high-pass filter, compressor setting, or gain value. Make those decisions based on the microphones, room, noise, and program rather than applying them as mandatory settings.

When a steerable audience array may help

Conventional microphones depend on workable physical positions and must fit around PA coverage, stage geometry, lighting, cables, and cameras. A steerable audience array can let a broadcast crew redirect pickup toward different audience zones in software when coverage needs change or microphone placement is constrained.

In a September 29, 2026 Shure-published case study, broadcast music mixer Matt Manix described deploying DCA901 arrays stage left and right, steering pickup toward different crowd sections, and retaining conventional audience microphones when a smaller microphone could be positioned closer or needed to stay out of a shot. Manix said, “We can have one person deploy two or three DCA901s for the same space where we’d put 24 or 30 mics out.” He also estimated thousands of dollars in labor savings over a 16-hour production day. These are one practitioner’s claims in a manufacturer case study, not independent measurements or a controlled comparison.

Audio-Technica PRO 45W ProPoint Cardioid Condenser Hanging Microphone, White
  • Hi-SPL handling is ideal for suspension over choirs and orchestras
  • Wide-range condenser element with low-mass diaphragm for superior performance
  • Self-contained electronics eliminate need for external power modules
  • Flat, smooth frequency response
  • 25' (7. 6 m) cable permanently attached between microphone and XLRM-type connector

There is no universal winner between conventional mics and an array, and the cited material does not establish a general sound-quality or total-cost comparison. Evaluate the approach against the intended workflow, particularly:

  • Which audience section and width need coverage
  • Venue size and the relationship between stage, audience, and PA
  • Camera visibility and available physical mounting positions
  • Whether pickup zones need to change during the show
  • Microphone count, setup demands, recording channels, and software workflow
  • Purchase or rental budget

For a high-cost professional array, Manix’s case study recommends hands-on evaluation in the workflow where it will be used.

What general microphone-distance figures do—and do not—tell you

Shure support guidance says that, in general, an omnidirectional microphone should be no farther than 30% of critical distance from a talker, while a unidirectional microphone should be no farther than 50%. These are general speech-microphone placement thresholds, not specifications for how high or far away to hang a crowd microphone.

Likewise, a Shure church-audio article states that voice level rises by 6 dB when the microphone-to-mouth distance is cut in half, with background noise held constant. That illustrates why close placement helps capture an individual voice relative to background noise; it is not a formula for positioning an audience ambience microphone.
