A Top Employer award can be a meaningful way to recognize work on people practices—but “Top Employer” is not one universal credential. Before celebrating, name the awarding program, explain what it assessed, and avoid presenting recognition as proof that every employee has the same experience.
What a Top Employer award means
The meaning depends on the awarding body and its method. Top Employers Institute, Top Employer Certificate, and Top Workplaces are separate programs, not interchangeable names for one award. Their assessments use different evidence, so an organization should identify the specific program whenever it announces recognition.
For example, Top Employers Institute describes its certification as an assessment of implemented HR practices. That is different from a program that bases recognition on employee survey responses, and neither approach alone establishes that every team or location has an equally positive workplace experience.

How Top Employers Institute assesses organizations
As one clearly named example, Top Employers Institute says its annual global certification program begins with an HR Best Practices Survey and includes independent validation and benchmarking against certified employers. The survey covers 350 practices across six HR domains:

These are the Institute’s program details, not criteria that apply to every award using similar wording. The Institute presents certification as a way to benchmark HR work and support ongoing improvement, as well as to communicate recognition through a certification seal and employer-brand materials. How similarly named programs differ
Similar labels can describe substantially different assessment models. Compare the actual awarding body, evidence, validation, scope, and validity period rather than assuming a shared standard.

These differences matter when explaining what a recognition demonstrates. An HR-practice assessment, an employee survey, and a combined method do not measure exactly the same thing. For survey-based programs, describe the survey’s scope and anonymity only if the specific provider confirms those details.
How to celebrate the recognition credibly
A strong announcement makes the work behind the result visible, without turning a credential into a blanket promise about employee experience.

- Name the program and result. State the awarding body, the recognition received, and the relevant year or cycle. Avoid calling it a universal “best employer” ranking unless that is exactly what the program awarded.
- Explain what was assessed. Summarize the program’s actual evidence—for example, HR practices, an employee survey, or both—and link to the provider’s description.
- Credit the people and work involved. Recognize the HR teams and employees whose contributions helped shape the practices or feedback considered by the program.
- Connect the recognition to specific work. Point to relevant initiatives in the assessed areas, such as learning, wellbeing, or work environment, only where they reflect what the organization actually does.
- Say what comes next. Identify a concrete improvement priority so the award is framed as a checkpoint in ongoing work, not the end of it.
- Use the seal and brand assets accurately. Follow the awarding body’s rules for displaying its certification mark and materials; do not imply endorsement beyond the recognition granted.
What outcome statistics can—and cannot—show
Top Employers Institute reports several business-impact figures on its certification page. They are provider-reported analyses with specific comparison groups and periods, not guarantees for an individual employer or independent estimates applicable to all organizations.
- The Institute reports 22% higher stock-market return over five years for publicly listed certified employers in its 2018–2024 certification cohort compared with non-certified peers; the page’s footnote describes a market-index comparison.
- It reports results 14% above global benchmarks based on case-study data from 2012–24.
- It reports up to a 150% increase in career-site traffic after certification, based on analysis comparing Glassdoor ratings for Top Employers with the Glassdoor average over 2018–22. The same page says certified organizations were twice as likely to earn 4+ stars on Glassdoor.
These figures provide context about what the Institute says it has observed; they do not establish that certification caused the outcomes or that another organization should expect the same results. The Institute’s certification page includes its reported results and qualifications.
