There is no definitive, objective top ten for the Game Boy Advance. This ranking weighs how well each game delivers its core experience, its originality or value as a portable version, its replay appeal, and how practical it is to enjoy today. Critic aggregates and publication rankings help identify standouts, but they measure different things; the order below is an editorial judgment, not a consensus scorecard.
For context, GameSpot says more than 1,500 titles were released for the system, without specifying its counting method. The ten below offer a useful cross-section of its adventures, tactics, platformers, and role-playing games.
How this ranking works
A strong GBA game can be a faithful portable version of a console classic, a remake that substantially reworks an older game, or an original adventure designed around the system. Those are different achievements. This list balances craft, distinctiveness, replayability, and accessibility, while accounting for whether a game’s best features depend on multiplayer.

Metacritic’s aggregate scores offer one reference point, while Nintendo Life and GamesRadar publish their own ranked selections and GameSpot presents an alphabetical guide. None establishes a single correct order. Metascores below are those shown on Metacritic’s dynamic pages when observed in 2026, so they may change.
#1 Best Overall
- This renewed game will not come with the original case or manual; cartridge only. It has been cleaned, tested, and is in nice condition.
The 10 best GBA games
1. The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past / Four Swords
The GBA release brings the acclaimed SNES adventure to a handheld and adds Four Swords, a separate multiplayer adventure. Metacritic lists the combined release at 95. Its place at the top rests primarily on the solo adventure: a richly designed action-adventure built around exploration, combat, and puzzles that still works when played alone.
Four Swords is a meaningful extra, not a reason to treat the entire package as a multiplayer-only game. GameSpot notes that each participant needs a game copy and a Game Boy Advance, so its cooperative appeal depends on access to the additional copies and hardware.
2. Metroid: Zero Mission
Zero Mission retells the original Metroid, adding new challenges and content. The result is a focused exploration game with a clearer route into the series than the original, while preserving the appeal of finding upgrades and opening paths through an interconnected world. Metacritic lists an 89 Metascore, and Nintendo Life and GamesRadar also include it in their GBA coverage.

3. The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
The Minish Cap makes its shrinking mechanic central to exploration: changing size reframes familiar spaces and creates puzzles around details that would otherwise be easy to overlook. Metacritic lists an 89 Metascore. Nintendo Life also includes it among its GBA selections and identifies GBA titles available through Nintendo Switch Online; check the current catalog and regional access before relying on that route.
4. Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
This comic role-playing adventure makes its two heroes’ partnership part of both its battles and its puzzles. Coordinated character moves give the combat a tactile, timing-based quality, while the writing keeps the journey light. Metacritic lists a 90 Metascore, making it one of the highest-scoring games in this selection, though this ranking puts it below the top three because its appeal is more specifically tied to its RPG format.
5. Advance Wars
Advance Wars turns grid-based, turn-based tactics into an inviting handheld game without stripping away strategic depth. Its clear unit roles and map objectives make it approachable, while each decision about positioning and resources can change the course of a battle. GameSpot praises the series for this balance. It is a strong choice for players who want thoughtful, self-paced sessions rather than action-platforming or a long narrative RPG.
Rank #3
- In All Grown Up - Chuckie's in Love Chuckie becomes Chongo to get a girl's attention, while Angelica takes on Pepe, the weird cafeteria chef.
- In SpongeBob SquarePants - Pizza Delivery, Mr. Krabs sends SpongeBob and Squidward to deliver a Krabby Patty pizza. When they get lost, SpongeBob has to keep Squidward from eating the pizza before Squidward eats it!
- In The Fairly OddParents - The Big Problem Timmy wishes himself into adulthood. After becoming a short bald man, Timmy has to find his inner child to wish himself back to normal.
- Simple DVD-like controls -- Operate the Rewind, Fast Forward, Chapter Skip, Reverse, Pause and animated chapter menus through the D-pad and buttons
6. Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow
Aria of Sorrow stands out among the GBA Castlevania games for its soundtrack, weapons, and Tactical Soul system, which lets the player acquire and use enemy abilities. GameSpot singles out those features. They give exploration and combat a collectible-driven dimension: trying new abilities can change how encounters feel and encourage revisiting earlier areas.

7. Golden Sun
Golden Sun earns its place through the combination of a distinctive world, a memorable cast, polished visual presentation, and substantial RPG gameplay. GameSpot highlights those qualities in its coverage of Golden Sun and its sequel, The Lost Age. Start here if you want a story-led role-playing game rather than a tactics game or a short action adventure.
8. Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire
Ruby and Sapphire bring the familiar creature-collecting role-playing formula to the GBA, with an adventure built around assembling a team and progressing through the game world. GamesRadar includes the pair in its ranking and identifies Game Freak as developer and 2002 as the release year. They suit players looking for a long-form RPG loop and a roster to build over time.

9. Kirby and the Amazing Mirror
Rather than following a strictly linear route, Kirby and the Amazing Mirror connects areas into a larger exploration map. GamesRadar and GameSpot call attention to its interconnected design and cooperative possibilities. That structure makes it a different kind of Kirby adventure, especially for players who enjoy discovering routes and returning to places they could not fully explore earlier.
10. Super Mario Advance 2: Super Mario World
This GBA version brings Super Mario World to a portable format, and Luigi is playable in the GBA release, according to GamesRadar and TechRadar. Its appeal is the finely tuned platforming and exploration of the original game in a handheld edition. It is a particularly straightforward recommendation for players who want precise jumping and level discovery rather than a new genre or a lengthy RPG.

Buying a physical cartridge
For an original copy, search for the specific title and platform or for an authentic Game Boy Advance game cartridge. Listings vary, and no current stock or seller has been verified here. Before buying a used cartridge, check the seller’s authenticity information, region, return terms, and whether the save function has been tested. Do not assume that a cartridge works or retains saves based on the title or listing photo alone.
Using original hardware
A Game Boy Advance or used Game Boy Advance SP is another way to play physical cartridges. Check the condition and seller terms for the particular console, and remember that multiplayer features may require additional copies and hardware. This matters most for Four Swords, where GameSpot says every participant needs both a game copy and a Game Boy Advance.
