Red text can look soft or fringed in a JPEG exported from an HTML canvas because JPEG may store color detail at lower resolution than brightness detail. Canvas does not provide a standard setting that switches JPEG to 4:4:4, and no universal quality value guarantees that mode. For crisp text and graphics, use PNG when practical; if JPEG is mandatory, verify the output or use an encoder with an explicit chroma-sampling control.
Why red text can blur in a canvas JPEG
JPEG encoding can represent an image using luminance (brightness) and chrominance (color-difference) information. Since fine brightness changes are generally more noticeable than fine color changes, an encoder may reduce the spatial resolution of chroma to save data. This process is called chroma subsampling. Apple’s image-compression documentation describes 4:2:0 chroma channels as half the width and half the height of the luminance channel.
That trade-off is often unobtrusive in photographs, but can show up around narrow, saturated text. A red letter on a white or gray background has a sharp color boundary. If a chroma sample covers both the letter and the background, the encoded edge can lose precision. Brightness detail may remain comparatively sharp, making the result look like colored softness or a halo rather than ordinary overall defocus. This is how the documented sampling mechanism can affect red text; the technical sources describe subsampling, not a test of this exact canvas example.

What 4:2:0 and 4:4:4 mean
The numbers describe relative sampling of luminance and chrominance components, not image dimensions or a quality percentage. libjpeg-turbo’s documentation describes 4:4:4 as one chroma component per source pixel and 4:2:0 as one per 2-by-2 pixel block.

- 4:2:0: Chroma has half the horizontal and half the vertical resolution of luminance. Neighboring pixels share color information, which can soften sharp colored boundaries.
- 4:4:4: Chroma is sampled per pixel, so this particular loss of color-edge detail from subsampling is avoided. JPEG is still lossy; 4:4:4 does not make it mathematically lossless.
Where does 4:4:4 kick in for canvas JPEG?
There is no standardized threshold. The WHATWG HTML Standard’s canvas serialization rules define a quality argument for formats that support variable quality, but leave its interpretation to implementations. The standard says: “Different implementations can have slightly different interpretations of "quality".” It provides no canvas parameter for selecting 4:4:4, 4:2:2, or 4:2:0.
So a call such as canvas.toBlob(callback, "image/jpeg", 0.95) requests a quality level; it does not specify a sampling mode. A higher value may reduce other JPEG artifacts, but the number alone cannot tell you whether the encoder chose 4:4:4.

A 2013 Chromium issue records a historical compatibility discussion that included a report of Firefox and Safari using 4:4:4 at quality 1.0, followed by a Chromium fix related to subsampling at maximum quality. That is historical evidence, not a current rule for all browsers, versions, and operating systems. The available standards and documentation do not establish a current cross-browser quality-to-sampling chart.
Choose an export method based on what matters

Practical export steps
Use PNG for text-heavy graphics
PNG is the canvas default and required output format under the HTML Standard. MDN’s canvas documentation also notes that PNG is required, while unsupported requested formats can fall back to PNG. Choose PNG when edge clarity matters and the resulting file size and delivery workflow are acceptable.

Check the format the browser actually returned
If your application depends on JPEG, verify the output type rather than assuming the request succeeded. MDN notes that an unsupported requested type falls back to PNG; the standard describes checking a returned data URL’s prefix. With toBlob(), inspect the resulting blob’s MIME type.
Use an encoder with a sampling selector when JPEG control matters
If the pipeline must produce JPEG and chroma sampling matters, encode with a library or application that exposes sampling modes. libjpeg-turbo documents distinct 4:4:4, 4:2:2, and 4:2:0 modes. Inspect the encoded result in the workflow you ship; a canvas quality value is not a substitute for an explicit sampling setting.

Prefer toBlob for large exports
For large images, MDN recommends canvas.toBlob() with an object URL rather than toDataURL(), which creates an in-memory string and can cause performance or URL-length problems. This is a memory-handling choice, not a sharpness fix.
