No. Windows Security is the built-in Windows app that brings together security settings and status. Microsoft Defender Antivirus is the antivirus component you can manage through it. Windows Security also includes controls for protections such as the firewall, so the two names are related but do not mean the same thing.
What each name means
| Name | What it refers to | Where to find it or how to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Security | The built-in security app in Windows 10 and Windows 11. | Open it from the Start menu to review security areas and provider status. Microsoft’s Windows Security app overview |
| Microsoft Defender Antivirus | Microsoft’s antivirus component for Windows. | Look under Virus & threat protection in Windows Security for scan and antivirus settings. Microsoft’s Defender overview |
| Windows Defender Security Center | A former name for the Windows Security app. | Older instructions may use this name; look for the current Windows Security app instead. Microsoft’s Defender overview |
| Microsoft Defender app | A separate app Microsoft associates with Microsoft 365 Family or Personal. | It is not another name for the antivirus built into Windows. Microsoft’s installation information |
| Windows Defender Firewall / Windows Firewall | A built-in firewall capability, distinct from antivirus. | Find firewall and network controls in Windows Security. Microsoft’s firewall and network protection guide |
What Windows Security includes beyond antivirus
Windows Security is a control center, not just a place to launch virus scans. Its areas can include firewall and network protection, app and browser control, device security, and protection history. The exact pages and options can differ with Windows configuration, installed security providers, or organization management; a work- or school-managed device may not show every control.
How to check which antivirus is active
- Open Start and select Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Review the status and security-provider information shown on your device to see which antivirus is providing protection.
A compatible third-party antivirus may become the active provider, and Microsoft Defender Antivirus can turn off automatically while that product is active. Microsoft’s guidance says Defender Antivirus should turn back on after the other product is removed. Check the status shown on your own device rather than assuming that every PC uses the same provider or controls. Microsoft’s scan guidance
Why exclusions are not a routine fix
An antivirus exclusion prevents Microsoft Defender Antivirus from checking the excluded file, folder, file type, or process for threats. That can leave the device and its data vulnerable, so do not add an exclusion casually just to get past a warning or solve an unexplained problem. Microsoft’s Windows Security app overview

The practical distinction
- Use Windows Security to see the available security areas and provider status.
- Use Virus & threat protection within it for Microsoft Defender Antivirus scans and controls.
- Treat “Windows Defender Security Center” as an older app name, and distinguish the separate Microsoft Defender app associated with Microsoft 365 from the built-in antivirus.
