To change or remove a Gmail filter, use Gmail on a computer: open Settings → See all settings → Filters and Blocked Addresses, find the rule, then choose Edit or Delete. An edit is not saved until you choose Continue and then Update filter.
How to find your Gmail filters
- Open Gmail on a computer.
- At the top right, select Settings, then See all settings.
- Open the Filters and Blocked Addresses tab.
- Locate the filter you want to change or remove.
Google documents this route for Gmail on a computer. An equivalent filter-management route in Gmail’s mobile apps is not established here. See Google’s filter instructions.
How to edit a Gmail filter
- On the filter you want to change, select Edit.
- Change the filter criteria, then select Continue.
- Review the actions and select Update filter to save.
Use Edit when you want to keep the rule but change what messages it matches or what Gmail does with them.
How to delete a Gmail filter
- In Filters and Blocked Addresses, find the rule you no longer want.
- Select Delete, then confirm with OK.
Delete removes the filter rule; choose it when you no longer want Gmail applying that rule. Google’s filter instructions cover both editing and deletion.

Why Gmail messages may be deleted or skipped
If expected messages are missing, inspect the actions on your filters before changing other settings. In particular, look for Delete it, which can remove matching mail, and Skip Inbox, which can keep matching mail out of the inbox. Edit the relevant filter to change its action, or delete it if you no longer need the rule. Google recommends checking these filter actions in its missing-message troubleshooting guide.
What to do if a filter looks unfamiliar
Check whether an unexpected rule forwards mail to an unfamiliar address or automatically deletes messages. If you did not create it, treat it as a possible account-security issue: review the filter and your account’s security, rather than simply assuming it is an old rule. Google’s Gmail security tips advise confirming that forwarding and deletion filters were created by the account owner.

A filter and a blocked sender are separate controls. If mail from one specific sender is going to Spam, review your blocked senders rather than editing a filter: Gmail sends future messages from a blocked sender to Spam.
