If you disengage the self-propel drive, some walk-behind mowers can be pushed by hand; with the drive engaged, the mower propels itself. The exact behavior depends on the model and its controls. Pushing it does not stop the blade, so follow the mower’s manual before moving or transporting it.
What happens with the drive disengaged or engaged?
These are two different operating states, and the drive control—not the fact that you are pushing—determines whether the mower is self-propelling.

Why might a mower resist rolling backward?
On some models covered by Toro’s manual, the mower may not roll freely backward immediately after self-propelling because the wheel drive has not disengaged. Toro’s procedure is to let the mower move slightly forward to disengage the drive. If it still does not roll easily, the manual advises contacting an authorized service dealer. This is model-specific guidance; do not force a mower that resists movement or assume the same workaround applies to other designs. Toro Interactive Manual

Is it safe to push while the engine is running?
Do not treat manual movement as a safety procedure. On the Scheppach DM51S, the manual warns that the blade starts rotating as soon as the engine starts. It directs users to switch off the engine and make sure the blade has stopped when moving the mower to or from the mowing area. Follow the shutdown and transport instructions for your own mower; disengaging the drive does not stop the blade.

What to do if it will not roll normally
- Check the manual for the mower’s specified drive-control position and movement procedure.
- Do not force the mower or assume another make’s instructions apply.
- If the manual’s procedure does not resolve the resistance, contact an authorized service dealer where the manufacturer recommends it.
