CircleCI announced Machine Runner Orchestrator 1.0.0 GA on September 14, 2026, replacing the preview product called Runner Provisioner. The controller automatically adjusts self-hosted machine-runner capacity to match CI demand; the GA release adds support for scaling CPU, GPU, and ARM resource classes from one deployment. Existing preview users must uninstall and reinstall under the new chart and repository names, with runners offline during the transition.
What Machine Runner Orchestrator does
Machine Runner Orchestrator is a Kubernetes controller for CircleCI self-hosted machine runners. It polls CircleCI for pending and running tasks, then adjusts the replica count of a KubeVirt VirtualMachinePool to respond to that demand. In practical terms, it helps operators provision runner virtual machines as work arrives and scale them back as demand changes. CircleCI’s product documentation describes its behavior and setup.
CircleCI’s September 14, 2026 release note says the product, previously called Runner Provisioner, is now generally available. The release is version 1.0.0.
What changed in the GA release
The most notable operational addition is the ability to autoscale CPU, GPU, and ARM resource classes from one orchestrator deployment. CircleCI names GKE, AKS, and EKS as supported environments, along with other Kubernetes clusters based on KubeVirt. This does not mean CircleCI installs or operates the customer’s Kubernetes cluster: the cluster must already be available and have KubeVirt installed.

CircleCI says Machine Runner Orchestrator is included with self-hosted runners on every CircleCI plan at no additional cost. That statement concerns the orchestrator itself; it does not establish that the underlying Kubernetes, compute, or infrastructure resources are free.
What teams need before adopting it
The main prerequisite is a Kubernetes cluster with KubeVirt installed. The Machine Runner Orchestrator chart does not install KubeVirt. CircleCI’s setup guide says the image and Helm chart are publicly available without registry credentials or an invitation.

Before adopting it, check whether your team:
- Already operates a Kubernetes cluster with KubeVirt.
- Needs CPU, GPU, or ARM runner pools to scale through one deployment.
- Uses GKE, AKS, EKS, or another KubeVirt-based Kubernetes environment.
- Can schedule the preview-to-GA reinstall and accommodate a temporary runner outage.

Migration: preview users must reinstall
Existing Runner Provisioner preview deployments cannot simply continue under the old names. CircleCI says the chart, image repository, and Packagecloud repository names changed, so preview users must uninstall the existing deployment and reinstall using the GA names and instructions.

Runners for configured resource classes will be offline between uninstall and reinstall. Plan the change for a period when your team can tolerate reduced or unavailable self-hosted runner capacity, and consult CircleCI’s current installation guide for the GA setup details.

Preview operators moving to GA should use the 1.0.0 release rather than treating the rename as a packaging-only change; the release includes these stated security fixes.
