Ledger is investigating reports that customers in Southeast Asia who bought hardware wallets from reseller CryptoBilis lost funds. According to The Block’s October 9, 2026 report, Ledger asked the reseller to pause sales and shipments and advised some recent buyers not to start setup. The reported losses and their cause remain unconfirmed.
What Ledger reportedly told CryptoBilis buyers
The Block reported that the advice differed depending on whether a buyer had set up the device:
- Bought within the prior 90 days but not set up: The report says buyers were advised not to begin setup.
- Already set up: The report says buyers were advised to consider moving assets to a new Ledger signer with a newly generated recovery phrase.
These are recommendations attributed to The Block’s report, not individualized incident-response instructions. If you believe you are affected, contact Ledger through its official support site and consider notifying relevant authorities.

The Block cited an on-chain estimate of more than $72 million in suspected losses. It also attributed a separate estimate of more than $86 million to on-chain researcher Specter. Neither figure is a confirmed final total, and the attribution of losses remains unsettled.

What is known about the cause?
The cited report does not establish how the reported losses occurred. It does not confirm that CryptoBilis devices were tampered with or pre-seeded, or that a Ledger hardware vulnerability caused the losses. Treat those explanations as unproven.
Ledger described a different, historical risk in a January 12, 2018 warning: a buyer received a second-hand Nano S that had already been initialized, along with recovery words known to the seller. Anyone who also knows a device’s recovery phrase can potentially access the assets controlled by it. That case illustrates why buyers should initialize devices themselves, but it does not show what happened in the CryptoBilis reports.

How to check a Ledger signer before using it
Verify the seller
Ledger’s buying guidance recommends buying directly from Ledger, an official or authorized reseller storefront on Amazon, or another authorized reseller, and checking the seller against Ledger’s current authorized-reseller information. That registry can change, so do not rely on an old list or assume a marketplace listing is authorized just because it appears there.
Set it up yourself
A legitimate Ledger signer should not arrive with a recovery phrase or PIN already configured. Ledger says the device generates the recovery phrase during setup. If a phrase is written on a card, printed in the instructions, or supplied before you complete setup, do not use it.

Ledger recommends checking product authenticity and integrity with Genuine Check. Follow the current instructions in Ledger’s official app and support materials. Genuine Check is one precaution; it should not be treated as proof against every possible risk.
Keep the recovery phrase secret
Never share your recovery phrase or type it into a website, message, or application. Ledger’s phishing guidance warns about messages that ask for the 24-word phrase. Ledger’s security guidance says to keep it private; its buying guidance puts it plainly: “If anything prompts you for it, it’s a scam.” Download Ledger Wallet from Ledger’s website, not from a link in an unsolicited message.
