An experimental community driver project called NullMoth aims to bring NVIDIA graphics to Intel/OpenCore systems running macOS 15 Sequoia. Its README identifies an RTX 5060 as the card physically validated by the project; a broader device list is not proof that other listed GPUs work. This is unofficial software, not a release from Apple or NVIDIA.

What the NullMoth driver does

NullMoth describes a graphics stack that lets macOS applications use NVIDIA GPUs through a Metal driver plugin. The documented path connects Metal to an Apple AIR-to-SPIR-V translator, Mesa’s NVK Vulkan backend, macOS kernel extensions, and the GPU. Its kernel components use NVIDIA open GPU kernel modules under macOS. This is a community implementation, not an Apple or NVIDIA driver.

The project targets Intel Macs and OpenCore systems. Its README identifies macOS 15 Sequoia as the primary target and says tests were run under macOS 15.7.x and 15.8.1. Read the NullMoth project documentation for its current requirements and instructions.

Which NVIDIA GPUs are documented?

The README’s device table covers Turing-and-later families, including GTX 16, RTX 20, 30, 40 and 50 series, TITAN RTX, and supported Quadro and RTX workstation cards. But the project specifically names an RTX 5060 as its physical validation card. Inclusion in the table does not establish that every model has been tested or will work in a given system.

An independent report describes a desktop rendered through an RTX 5060 and Metal applications detecting the card. That is an early demonstration, not evidence of dependable performance or broad app compatibility. The report also notes that Apple and NVIDIA have not endorsed the project.

What remains unproven

Detecting a GPU or rendering a desktop is only part of making a graphics driver useful. The independent report says stability, performance, power management, sleep, display outputs, and installation safety still need validation. Hackintosh configurations vary, and even an Intel Mac Pro tower with PCIe expansion should not be treated as a plug-and-play target.

The project README also lists a separate package component for macOS 26 Tahoe, but says full hardware and application qualification is pending. Sequoia testing does not establish Tahoe support.

Do not confuse it with the RTX 4080 Tahoe experiment

OpenNVDA is a separate project, not an extension of NullMoth’s RTX 5060/Sequoia announcement. Its README describes an RTX 4080 on macOS Tahoe 26.7 as an October 2 checkpoint, explicitly not a release. The project reports selected low-level and Metal tests while listing unresolved hardware cursor output, application compatibility, sleep/wake, and long-session qualification. Those results should not be read as expanded support for NullMoth or as a consumer-ready driver.

Installation and recovery considerations

NullMoth documents prebuilt installation and an optional 1401 Mac app. The instructions include verifying package hashes, installing components, rebooting, and approving system extensions in macOS settings. They also cover OpenCore configuration and BIOS requirements, including Above 4G Decoding enabled and CSM disabled. The README says to retain the boot medium used to start the system while the app operates.

Those steps are project-specific, not a universal recipe for every Hackintosh. Consult the current README and its recovery/removal instructions before making changes. Unofficial kernel and graphics components can leave macOS unable to boot, reduce security, or result in no usable video. Treat this as experimental software for a spare or test configuration, not a routine upgrade for a daily-use machine.

Should you try it?

  • Potentially, for experimentation: if you have a compatible Intel/OpenCore test system, can recover it if startup or video fails, and are comfortable following evolving project instructions.
  • Not as a guaranteed RTX upgrade: the RTX 5060 is the documented physical validation card, and the wider device table is not equivalent to model-by-model testing.
  • Not as a proven daily-driver solution: key questions about stability, performance, power management, sleep, displays, and application compatibility remain open.
