If Windows 11 stays on “Please Wait” after you enter your password, restart the PC once. If the screen still hangs, try signing in through Safe Mode using your account password. These checks can help narrow down the problem; the message alone does not identify a single cause.

1. Restart once and note when the problem began

Microsoft Support says, “Restarting can clear temporary system errors that may be causing the problem.” From the sign-in screen, select the power button, then choose Restart. If Windows responds to neither the screen nor keyboard, avoid repeatedly forcing the PC off; use the manufacturer’s guidance for your model if a normal restart is not possible.

Make a note if the hang began immediately after a Windows update. That timing does not prove the update caused it, but it may help you choose a relevant recovery option later.

2. Try Safe Mode from the sign-in screen

Safe Mode starts Windows with basic drivers and settings. If you can sign in there, that helps narrow the investigation, but it does not by itself identify the cause.

  1. At the sign-in screen, select the Power icon.
  2. Hold Shift while selecting Restart.
  3. On Choose an option, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  4. After the PC restarts, press 5 or F5 to choose Safe Mode with Networking.
  5. Sign in with your Microsoft-account or local-account password.

PIN and biometric sign-in options are unavailable in Safe Mode, so use the account password rather than your PIN or fingerprint. If you do not know that password, stop here and use Microsoft’s account-recovery guidance rather than changing account files or settings.

If Safe Mode lets you sign in

Investigate startup programs or services before making more disruptive changes. Microsoft Learn recommends a clean-start troubleshooting process for isolating startup issues and suggests examining Event Viewer for relevant errors.

Dell Latitude 5420 14" FHD Business Laptop Computer, Intel Quad-Core i5-1145G7, 16GB DDR4 RAM, 256GB SSD, Camera, HDMI, Windows 11 Pro (Renewed)
  • 256 GB SSD of storage.
  • Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
  • Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
  • Use Microsoft’s clean-start instructions to disable non-Microsoft services and startup items for a diagnostic test.
  • Change one item at a time where practical, so you can identify whether a change affects sign-in.
  • Check Event Viewer for errors around the time the hang occurred. Treat an entry as a lead to investigate, not proof that it caused the problem.
  • Restore normal startup after testing, following Microsoft’s instructions.

Microsoft’s sign-in guidance also recommends trying another account on the PC if one is available. If another account works, investigate the affected account; that result alone does not establish that its profile is corrupted.

3. Choose a recovery option based on what you can access

If normal sign-in remains blocked, Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) may offer less disruptive options than resetting or reinstalling Windows. If you can reach the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart to open recovery options. If Windows cannot reach that screen, use Microsoft’s instructions for entering WinRE or the PC maker’s model-specific recovery guidance.

Back up important files if you can before using recovery tools. Some choices can remove files or applications, and the outcome depends on the option selected.

Option When it may fit What it changes or risks
System Restore You have a restore point from before the sign-in problem. Rolls back system files and settings without affecting personal files. Availability depends on whether a suitable restore point exists.
Uninstall recent update The problem began after a specific Windows update and WinRE offers the option. Removes a recent update; the timing of the problem is a reason to consider this path, not proof that the update caused it.
Startup Repair Windows has a relevant startup failure and the tool is available in WinRE. Attempts to address certain startup problems. It is not a guaranteed fix for every post-password sign-in hang.
Quick machine recovery The PC runs Windows 11 version 24H2 or later and the option is available in recovery. Can connect to Windows Update after repeated startup failures to check for a Microsoft-provided fix. Microsoft says applying a fix this way does not reset the PC or affect files, apps, or settings.
Reset this PC Less disruptive recovery choices have not resolved the issue. Reinstalls Windows. The available choices differ in whether personal files are retained; apps and settings may be removed.
Reinstall from a recovery drive You have decided a reinstall is necessary and have suitable recovery media. Removes personal files, apps, and settings.

Check availability before choosing Quick machine recovery

Microsoft documents Quick machine recovery for Windows 11 version 24H2 or later. Windows 11 Home has it enabled by default; on Pro and Enterprise, an IT administrator may need to enable it. Managed work or school PCs may have organization-specific recovery policies, so contact IT before changing recovery settings.

4. Save reset or reinstall for later

Resetting or reinstalling is more disruptive than checking Safe Mode or using an appropriate restore or update option. Read each on-screen choice carefully, especially its effect on personal files, apps, and settings. Microsoft warns that some recovery choices can result in data loss and recommends backing up important files first.

If you need installation or recovery media, follow Microsoft’s current instructions for creating or using it. A PC manufacturer’s recovery image may include hardware-specific drivers and factory applications that generic Microsoft installation media does not. Check the manufacturer’s official support page for your exact PC model before choosing media.

When to ask for help

  • If the device is managed by work or school, ask your IT department before using recovery options that could remove settings or data.
  • If recovery tools do not resolve the problem, or you cannot safely protect important files, contact Microsoft Support or the PC manufacturer.
  • If Windows opens only in Safe Mode, use the clean-start and Event Viewer checks to gather information before making broader changes.
