Claude Code can run recurring work in more than one way, but those options differ in where they execute and how long they last. For a small-business workflow, Anthropic’s cloud routines are the closest fit when a job should continue with the laptop closed; local /loop is for session-bound work, while Managed Agents scheduled deployments are a separate Claude Platform API product. The title’s specific business setup and results are not established, so this guide distinguishes documented features from a recommended design.
What a scheduled Claude Code agent system consists of
A useful way to design the workflow is as a chain of responsibilities rather than treating “the agent” as the whole system:
- Trigger: A schedule, API call, or supported event starts a run.
- Bounded task: The prompt specifies the job, its inputs, and what it must not do.
- Tools and data: The run receives only the repository, connectors, and other access it needs.
- Record: Inputs, outputs, and attempted side effects are retained where the operator can inspect them.
- Validation: Deterministic checks and permissions constrain actions that must not depend on the model interpreting a prompt correctly.
- Escalation: Ambiguous or consequential decisions go to a person instead of being silently finalized.
This is a recommended architecture, not a description of a verified business implementation. Separate task roles can be useful, but a scheduler is not itself an agent, and the title alone does not establish that a particular system used multiple agents, parallel work, or a supervisor.

Cloud routines for laptop-independent recurring work
Anthropic described a routine as an automation configured with a prompt, repository, and connectors that can run on a schedule, from an API call, or in response to an event. Its announcement gives examples such as nightly backlog triage and weekly documentation-drift checks. Those examples show the kinds of tasks the product is intended to support; they are not evidence of a small business’s measured performance. Read the announcement for the product’s stated capabilities and preview terms.

The April 14, 2026 announcement said routines were available to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise users with Claude Code on the web enabled. It listed daily routine limits of 5 for Pro, 15 for Max, and 25 for Team and Enterprise; runs draw from subscription usage, and extra routines may be available through extra usage. These are announcement-era terms, not a guarantee of current limits, so check Anthropic’s current product details before planning a workload around them.
Local loops for work tied to a session
Anthropic Help Center guidance describes /loop as a local recurring task that can run for up to three days. That can suit brief polling or repeated work during an active local workflow, but it should not be mistaken for an always-on cloud schedule. The same guidance says cloud jobs created with /schedule keep working while the laptop is closed. See Anthropic’s scheduled-tasks guidance.

Managed Agents for API-based deployments
Managed Agents scheduled deployments use a cron expression and a configured timezone, with minute-level maximum granularity. A deployment needs agent configuration, environment configuration, and an initial user.message event. API requests require the managed-agents-2026-04-01 beta header, as specified in the documentation. Choose this route when you are building around Claude Platform’s deployed-agent API, rather than assuming it is another name for a Claude Code routine. Consult the deployment documentation for the API setup.
Separate agent roles from the schedule
A schedule answers when a run starts. Agent roles answer what work each run performs. For example, a small operation might consider distinct bounded tasks for summarizing incoming requests, drafting a response, or checking a report. Those are design examples, not claims about the system named in the title.

Claude Code offers several ways to shape behavior, including CLAUDE.md files, rules, skills, subagents, hooks, output styles, and system-prompt additions. Anthropic’s June 18, 2026 guidance explains that these mechanisms differ in how they load, persist, and use context. Use a role definition to make a task understandable; do not confuse a role prompt with an enforcement mechanism. Anthropic’s guidance on steering Claude Code.
Decide what may happen without a person
Unattended runs are most appropriate when the output is reviewable, the permitted actions are narrow, and a mistake can be detected and reversed. A reasonable design might let an agent classify or summarize information, then require review before it sends an external message, changes a customer record, spends money, or makes another consequential change.

- Grant only the repository, connector, and tool access needed for the task.
- Keep prompts specific about scope, expected output, and conditions for stopping.
- Use permissions and hooks for hard boundaries rather than relying on a prompt to enforce them.
- Route uncertainty and high-impact actions to a person.
- Keep a record that lets an operator inspect what ran and what it changed.
Anthropic’s June 18, 2026 guidance says prompted rules can fail in ambiguous or pressured situations and recommends hooks and permissions for deterministic controls. It states: “A real guardrail needs to be deterministic, and the enforcement methods are hooks and permissions.” That is Anthropic’s product guidance, not an independent security certification of an entire workflow. A schedule firing is not proof that the business task succeeded. Before relying on recurring automation, decide how the operator will answer these questions:
- Did the trigger run, and which prompt, inputs, and configuration did it use?
- Did the agent finish, fail, or stop for review?
- What files, records, or external systems did it attempt to change?
- How will a person verify that the output is correct and useful?
- What happens if a run is missed, repeated, or overlaps with an earlier run?
- Can the operation be safely retried, and can an unintended change be reversed?
These are implementation decisions, not documented guarantees of the scheduling options above. In particular, do not assume a scheduler automatically provides durable business state, retries, idempotency, audit history, or recovery behavior unless the selected product and configuration explicitly support them.
A practical decision path
- Keep it local and short-lived? Consider
/loopfor session-bound recurring work, within its stated local lifecycle. - Need a cloud routine without an open laptop? Evaluate Claude Code routines, checking current access, usage terms, and available triggers.
- Building a Claude Platform deployment on cron? Evaluate Managed Agents and follow its documented configuration, timezone, event, and API-header requirements.
- Need infrastructure control outside those products? A self-managed scheduler is a category-level alternative, but select and validate a specific implementation on its own merits.
- Would an error have a serious consequence? Keep the consequential action behind a deterministic control or human approval, regardless of scheduler.
No source-backed business performance result establishes that handing a tiny business to scheduled agents saves a particular amount of time, generates revenue, or runs reliably without intervention. Treat automation as a bounded workflow to monitor—not as proof that a business can be delegated wholesale.
