To make Waze inactive, open the app, tap the menu, and choose Sleep mode. If you mean closing Waze or stopping its access to your location, use the separate steps below: those actions are not the same. If Waze is connected to CarPlay or Android Auto, disconnect your phone first; Waze says turning it off on the phone also turns it off in the car.
Choose what “turn off Waze” means

How to make Waze inactive with Sleep mode
- Open Waze.
- Tap the menu icon.
- Tap Sleep mode.
Waze’s iPhone and iPad help page says Sleep mode makes the app inactive. This is the in-app option when you want to pause Waze rather than change its location permission.

- If Waze is connected to CarPlay or Android Auto, disconnect the phone first.
- Swipe up from the bottom of the screen to open the app switcher.
- Swipe the Waze app window up and away until it disappears.
On an iPhone with a Home button, use the device’s app-switcher gesture to bring up the open apps, then swipe Waze away. The exact gesture can depend on the iPhone model and iOS version.
How to stop Waze from accessing location on iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Go to Privacy & Security > Location Services > Waze.
- Choose a more restrictive permission or disable Waze’s location access, using the options shown in your iOS version.
Waze lists Always and While Using the App as permissions that let it use location. For the exact options available on your device, see Waze’s iPhone and iPad GPS permission instructions. Turning off device-wide Location Services also affects other apps and system features, so changing Waze’s own permission is the more targeted choice when available.

How to stop Waze from accessing location on Android
- Open your phone’s Settings.
- Go to Location > App location permissions.
- Find Waze and change its permission to a more restrictive option or Not allowed, if available.
Menu names and paths vary across Android devices and versions; follow the labels on your phone. Waze notes that some of its location instructions apply only to Android 12 and later. See Waze’s Android GPS permission instructions.

Why changing location permission is different from closing Waze
Closing Waze removes or stops the app session; changing its location permission controls whether it can access your device’s location. One does not automatically do the other. Waze says that, depending on your settings, it may check location while not in use for features such as planned-drive reminders, traffic updates, and parking assistance. Its privacy controls guidance explains the settings that affect those features.

What to do if Waze remains active in your car
Disconnect your phone from CarPlay or Android Auto before using the relevant phone steps. Waze says turning it off on the phone turns it off in the car, and specifically advises disconnecting first when using either car system. The app-switcher gesture described above is Waze’s documented method for iPhone and iPad; Android users should use their device’s own app controls if they need to stop an app, since the close-app gesture varies by device.
