PDFShift is a hosted API that converts HTML, website URLs, and Canvas objects into PDF files. Its most visible alternatives on Product Hunt include PDFMonkey, CraftMyPDF, DocSpring, Doppio, and several others, but no independent side-by-side test of these services was available as of 7 October 2026. No single product can therefore be named the best replacement. The right choice depends on how your HTML renders, how your data reaches the template, how many documents you generate, and what you pay at that volume. This guide shows how to shortlist the options and test them on your own documents.

What PDFShift does, in its own terms

PDFShift describes itself as an API for converting HTML documents, whether supplied as raw code or as a URL, into PDF files. Its homepage also promotes screenshot and Open Graph image use cases. The official FAQ says the service handles HTML documents, website URLs, and Canvas objects, and it gives invoice generation and exporting graphics output as examples.

The vendor advertises the following capabilities. These are PDFShift’s own descriptions, and independent testing of rendering quality, speed, security, or feature behaviour was not part of the review behind this article:

Plans, credits, and limits as published

PDFShift prices usage in credits. The figures below come from PDFShift’s homepage and FAQ, checked on 7 October 2026. They are the vendor’s current published terms, not a guarantee, so confirm them on the pricing page before you commit.

Item Published figure Where it appears and what it means
Free plan 50 credits per month Homepage. Credits reset monthly under the vendor’s plan terms.
Free-plan example limits 15 MB maximum file size; 30-second timeout Homepage example for the free plan. Check whether these limits apply to every plan.
Credit definition 1 credit covers a conversion of up to 5 MB of generated output FAQ. Larger outputs consume additional credits.
Typical customer example 1,250 credits per month FAQ example of usage, not a plan allocation.
Boost plan example $24 per month for 2,500 credits FAQ example. Confirm the current price.
Overage $0.03 per conversion above plan limits FAQ. The wording refers to conversions, while the credit rule refers to output size.

Worked cost example

Assume a team generates 3,000 invoices a month, each under 5 MB, so each uses one credit. On the Boost example plan, 2,500 credits cost $24. The remaining 500 conversions at $0.03 each add $15, for a total of $39 per month. Two points can change that figure. First, a document over 5 MB uses more than one credit, so a 12 MB invoice set may count as three. Second, the FAQ’s overage wording says “per conversion,” not “per credit.” Ask PDFShift in writing whether a multi-credit conversion counts as one conversion for overage.

Vendor performance and trust claims

PDFShift’s homepage lists several headline figures. All of them are the company’s own marketing numbers, and the page does not say how they were measured or when:

Claim Figure Qualification
Conversions 86+ million Vendor-reported. Year and counting method not stated on the page.
Developers 56,000+ Vendor-reported. Year not stated on the page.
Average conversion time 1.5 seconds Vendor-reported. Measurement method and document types not stated. Do not compare it with a competitor’s figure unless both were measured on the same documents.
Uptime 99.99% Vendor-reported. Measurement period not stated.

PDFShift also states that it does not store documents unless you request storage, and that its conversion technology is HIPAA compliant. Both statements are the vendor’s. Independent verification was not found, so teams handling regulated data should obtain the current contract, data-processing terms, retention behaviour, and processing location directly from the vendor and check them against their own obligations.

Alternatives listed on Product Hunt

Product Hunt’s alternatives page for PDFShift lists the following products. The page is a discovery list. It is not a ranking, and it does not show that each product offers a like-for-like replacement.

  • PDFMonkey
  • Robolly
  • Doppio, described on the listing as an HTML-to-PDF and image API
  • PDF Hippo
  • Transactional.dev
  • CraftMyPDF
  • tailwindpdf
  • PDF.to
  • Cassiopeia
  • ScreenshotOne
  • DocSpring, mentioned in the page introduction

The listing characterises some entries as PDF automation or PDF generation tools. It does not assign a category to every entry, so treat the categories as a starting point. Check each provider’s current documentation for supported input types, template handling, and limits before you add it to a shortlist.

Product Hunt discussion also asks how a Google offering compares with PDFShift on pricing, availability, customisability, and rendering fidelity. The pages reviewed do not provide that comparison, so a team weighing a Google option should run the same tests described below.

Where PDFShift came from

Product Hunt lists PDFShift as launched in 2018. In the product’s launch discussion, maker Cyril said invoice PDF generation was the original problem the product addressed. In a separate reply about running headless Chrome on Google App Engine, Cyril said that setup required more work than PDFShift’s POST-call workflow, and reported a 20-second conversion test at that time. That is historical commentary from the maker, not a current benchmark, and it predates the current published figures.

How to compare the services yourself

Because no independent benchmark has been published, the most reliable comparison is one you run. Use the same documents, the same credentials for a trial or free tier, and the same measurement script for each provider.

  1. Collect representative documents. Choose 10 to 20 real HTML inputs, including the difficult cases: web fonts, charts, maps, long tables, page breaks, dynamic content, and any print-only CSS.
  2. Check rendering fidelity. Compare page count, page breaks, fonts, and image placement against a reference rendering. Run pdffonts output.pdf on each result to confirm the fonts were embedded as expected.
  3. Measure latency and reliability. Send at least 100 sequential requests and a burst of parallel requests at your expected peak. Record median and 95th-percentile response times, and count failed requests and the error codes returned.
  4. Test the limits. Generate one output close to the file-size and timeout limits you will hit in production. Note whether the service fails cleanly or returns a partial file.
  5. Confirm the async model. If you rely on webhooks or asynchronous conversion, test a dropped webhook, a retried request, and a duplicate submission.
  6. Calculate cost at your real volume. Multiply your monthly documents by each provider’s current credit or document definition, add overage, and include the plan needed to cover your peak month.
  7. Review privacy terms in writing. Ask for the data-processing agreement, retention period, deletion process, and processing region, and file these alongside your compliance review.
  8. Estimate the integration cost. Count the engineering hours needed for authentication, template maintenance, error handling, and monitoring, since these often outweigh the monthly fee.

Matching the service to the use case

  • Invoices and statements from application data. Look first at providers that describe template merging and document generation, and test with your largest real invoice.
  • Converting an existing web page or URL. PDFShift’s URL and HTML conversion is directly relevant. Compare it on pages that depend on JavaScript and web fonts.
  • Open Graph and social images. PDFShift’s homepage describes screenshot and Open Graph uses. ScreenshotOne appears on the alternatives list, but its fit for image output should be tested against your own templates.
  • Regulated health or financial data. Treat the vendor’s compliance statements as starting claims. Obtain contractual terms first, because a hosted API receives the document content.
  • High-volume batch generation. Price the overage clause and test parallel throughput before choosing a plan. Low monthly volume rarely reveals these costs.

A hosted service always receives your HTML, URL, or data. If your requirement is that a file never leaves the user’s device, a hosted PDF API is the wrong architecture, and a browser-side or self-hosted renderer should be evaluated instead.
