Successful MSSPs treat industry events as an ongoing learning and relationship channel—not just a place to describe their company or collect contacts. They listen to peers, customers, and vendors; share a specific lesson grounded in real work; choose sessions that address current operating questions; and make time to continue relevant conversations afterward. These practices can make event participation more useful, but the available evidence does not show that attending an event by itself causes sales growth or better partnerships.
Lead with listening, then share something specific
At an event, a generic company description is easy to forget. A concrete observation from your own work gives the other person something useful to respond to: a recurring operational problem, a mistake your team corrected, or a position you can explain and defend. Do not present an internal metric or customer example unless you can support it and are permitted to share it.
In September 2026, MSSP Alert quoted SonicWall senior vice president of managed services Michael Crean urging attendees to listen to peers and vendors, then take those lessons back to customers. CyberDuo CEO Kevin Tadevosyan made a related point: remembered conversations tend to include a concrete fact the listener did not already know, rather than a company pitch. These are practitioners’ recommendations reported by MSSP Alert, not results from a controlled comparison of event strategies.

Listening is also practical preparation for better customer conversations. Ask peers how they approach an implementation or business decision, notice the language customers use for their problems, and bring back relevant ideas to validate with your own customers. Treat what you hear as a lead to investigate, not proof that the same approach will work for your organization.

Choose sessions that address real operating questions
MSP Global’s Summer 2025 State of the Industry Report asked 191 respondents to select up to three conference session types they found valuable. The percentages below describe those respondents’ selections; they are not estimates for all MSSPs or all conference attendees.
| Session type | Share selecting it |
|---|---|
| Business growth strategy sessions | 49% |
| Real-world case studies | 46% |
| Sales and marketing best practices | 41% |
| Technical masterclasses | 38% |
| Vendor demos and product launches | 30% |
| Tactical how-to sessions | 27% |
| Founder stories | 20% |
| Peer-led roundtables | 16% |
| Compliance deep-dives | 13% |
The report’s respondents expressed interest in practical concerns such as differentiating through added value amid price competition, getting pricing right, deciding which vendors to work with, and understanding how a provider scaled. Use those questions to choose sessions and guide conversations. A session title that sounds relevant is not enough: look for specific implementation detail, decisions made, and what did or did not work.
The survey suggests these business topics mattered to its respondents, while the technical and compliance options may matter more for a particular team’s current priorities. Select an agenda based on the operating problem you need to solve, rather than assuming a popular session type is automatically the best use of your time. See MSP Global for the report and its survey context.

Speak from experience—and make participation useful afterward
Speaking can give an MSSP a way to contribute expertise rather than rely only on booth visibility. Crean told MSSP Alert to submit a session drawn from a real win or mistake instead of waiting for a perfect, generic presentation. Chavers, also quoted in the article, encouraged speakers to cover what worked, what failed, and what they would change. These are individual practitioners’ views, not a guarantee that speaking will generate leads.
A useful session has a clear, bounded lesson. Explain the situation, the decision or action, the result you can substantiate, and the caveats that affect whether another provider could apply it. Avoid turning a customer story into a disguised pitch, and get permission before sharing identifiable customer details.
After a session or discussion, answer follow-up questions and continue conversations where there is a genuine reason to do so. Chavers said he would rather leave with 10 meaningful relationships than 500 names in a spreadsheet; that is his personal preference, not a measured benchmark. The practical implication is to prioritize relevance and follow-through over treating contact volume as success.

Evaluate sponsorship as a case-specific investment
A sponsorship can make sense when the event’s audience and format fit a defined business objective and the team can follow up. ConnectWise’s CyNet case study describes repeat sponsorship of IT Nation Connect. CyNet channel leader Jeannine Edwards calls the event foundational to the channel ecosystem and says sponsorship supports demand generation and access to operationally mature MSPs. The case study reports visibility, qualified pipeline, and accelerated sales cycles, but it is a vendor-published account of one company and does not independently establish causation or a general return on investment.
Before committing, compare the event’s likely audience and participation opportunities with the full cost and the team’s capacity to act on conversations. A sponsorship is a poor fit if the objective is vague, the audience is not relevant, or no one can handle follow-up after the event.

Compare events against your objective
Use the same criteria for each event under consideration. A pass, a speaking slot, and a sponsorship offer different forms of access, so compare the actual opportunities available rather than assuming one format is inherently better.
- Audience fit: Are attendees prospective MSSP buyers, relevant peers, potential partners, or vendors you need to meet?
- Learning fit: Does the agenda include practical growth guidance, real cases, useful technical depth, or implementation detail tied to a current priority?
- Participation access: Can your team speak, join peer discussions, arrange meetings, or otherwise contribute expertise?
- Relationship potential: Does the format leave room for substantive conversations and follow-up?
- Total cost and opportunity cost: Include passes or sponsorship, travel, staff time, and time away from customer work. The available sources establish no general ROI threshold.
- Evidence quality: Distinguish attendee survey preferences, organizer analysis, and vendor case-study claims from independent evidence of outcomes.
Interpret event-outcome claims cautiously
MSP Global’s September 2026 analysis of its survey waves reported higher rates of regular or occasional partnerships with another MSP or vendor among attendees than non-attendees. The event organizer itself cautioned that “Correlation does not mean causation.” Attendees may differ from non-attendees in other ways, so the reported association does not show that attending caused the partnerships.
The Channel Company’s IPED State of Partner Marketing 2025 research drew on an online survey of 151 solution providers and interviews with partners; MSPs made up 44% of the survey sample. Its article reported that almost 90% of partners rated face-to-face events as very important to their marketing strategy, and that in-person events ranked first for marketing impact among both large and small/medium partners. This describes surveyed partners’ views; it does not establish the return an individual MSSP will get from a specific event.

Plan for the work before and after the event
Event value depends on what your team does around the agenda, not simply on being present. Before registration, write down the operating question you want to answer and the kinds of people you need to hear from. Afterward, capture the lessons and commitments while they are fresh, then follow through where there is a clear next step.
- Set a concrete objective: For example, learn how peers handle a specific scaling challenge, evaluate a relevant vendor category, or share a lesson from a project.
- Review the agenda and access: Identify sessions and formats that match the objective, and check whether your pass includes the meetings or networking opportunities you expect.
- Prepare a useful contribution: Bring one defensible insight, question, or case lesson—not a memorized company overview.
- Listen and take focused notes: Record what is relevant, what needs verification, and who offered to continue a conversation.
- Follow up with context: Contact people when you have a specific shared topic or agreed next step; avoid treating every badge scan as a qualified opportunity.
- Apply and share what you learned: Validate ideas with your team or customers before changing services or publishing a claim.
