Use WhatsApp’s official transfer through Apple’s Move to iOS app while setting up a new or factory-reset iPhone. Select WhatsApp during the Android-to-iPhone transfer, then install WhatsApp on the iPhone, verify the same phone number, and import your chats. The iPhone must be in setup; this method does not merge Android chats into an already active iPhone account.
Before you start: check eligibility
The supported route is Move to iOS, used during iPhone setup. Confirm these requirements first:
- Your Android phone runs Android 5 or later, and your iPhone runs iOS 15.5 or later.
- Move to iOS is installed on Android, and WhatsApp is updated to the latest version available from Google Play and the App Store. WhatsApp’s current guidance gives no fixed app-version number.
- You can use the same phone number on both devices.
- The iPhone is new or factory reset, and WhatsApp has not already been activated on it.
- Both phones can stay connected to power and the same Wi-Fi network. Apple’s transfer flow also allows Android to connect to the iPhone’s hotspot.

Transfer WhatsApp chats with Move to iOS
- On Android, open Move to iOS and follow its onscreen instructions while setting up the iPhone.
- When prompted, enter the code displayed on the iPhone.
- Continue to the iPhone’s “Transfer Data” screen and select WhatsApp.
- On Android, tap Start in WhatsApp and wait for it to prepare the data. WhatsApp says the Android session is logged out after preparation finishes.
- Return to Move to iOS and continue the device transfer. Wait for its completion confirmation.
- Install the latest WhatsApp from the App Store, open it on the iPhone, and verify the same phone number used on Android.
- When WhatsApp offers the import, tap Start and allow it to finish before checking your chats.
Do not try to select a WhatsApp folder through Move to iOS’s file-browsing option; WhatsApp says that approach is unsupported. It also warns that other chat-migration apps may cause chat loss.

What transfers—and what does not
WhatsApp says the migration can include account information, profile photo, individual and group chats, communities, channel updates, chat history, media, and settings. These items are excluded:
- WhatsApp call history
- Display name
- Media received through WhatsApp Channels
- Peer-to-peer payment messages
WhatsApp Business chat migration is not supported by this flow. The transfer also does not create an iCloud backup. If you want a cloud backup of the transferred history, create one separately after the import. WhatsApp says the data remains on the Android phone unless you erase the phone or delete WhatsApp.

If your iPhone is already set up
WhatsApp migration must happen as part of setting up a new or factory-reset iPhone. If you have already completed setup, using this method requires resetting the iPhone, which erases its contents. Preserve any iPhone data you want to keep before resetting. WhatsApp also says old Android chats cannot be merged with newer chats already on the iPhone.
If you plan to change your phone number
Change the number on your old Android phone before beginning the migration, following WhatsApp’s number-change process. Then use that number on the iPhone. Registering a new number on the iPhone first does not move the old chat history.

Troubleshoot a transfer that stalls or fails
Keep WhatsApp and its data on Android until the import is complete and you have confirmed the history on the iPhone. WhatsApp says the data remains on the old phone if a transfer fails, stalls, or returns an error.
- Transfer errors: WhatsApp recommends restarting both phones for some errors. For problems with the Move to iOS app, it directs users to Apple Support.
- QR-code scanning problems: Increase the iPhone’s brightness, clean the Android camera, make sure you are scanning the correct QR code, and remove an iPhone screen protector if it interferes.
- Import warns that history may be corrupted: WhatsApp’s troubleshooting flow presents options to retry or skip the import. Review the prompt carefully before choosing.
WhatsApp’s stated position is that “Using any other apps to move chats isn’t supported and may cause loss of chats.” See its Android-to-iPhone troubleshooting page for the related recovery guidance.
