Gaming on a phone nowadays can mean a quick touch-controlled game, a social library that tracks achievements, a controller-supported title, or a game streamed over the internet. The experience depends on the game, your phone and operating system, and whether you install the game or stream it.
How big is phone gaming?
Mobile gaming is a large, established market, though market figures describe downloads and estimated revenue—not the number of distinct players. Sensor Tower reported that mobile game revenue rose 1% to an estimated $82 billion in 2025, and that mobile games were downloaded about 95,000 times per minute that year. The revenue figure is Sensor Tower’s mobile-game estimate; it should not be read as a total for every kind of game spending or distribution. Sensor Tower’s 2026 State of Gaming announcement also reports 52 billion downloads across mobile, PC, and console combined—a cross-platform figure, not a mobile-only total.
The two major mobile stores show different patterns in Sensor Tower’s 2025 estimates. Google Play accounted for 42 billion game downloads, while App Store gaming in-app purchase revenue was 75% higher than Google Play’s. Downloads and in-app purchase revenue measure different things, and neither number represents unique players. Sensor Tower’s State of Gaming 2026 report covers those store estimates.

What does playing on a phone feel like?
Touch-first games
Many mobile games are designed around taps, swipes, and on-screen buttons. Touch controls keep play self-contained: there is no separate accessory to pair or carry. How comfortable they feel depends on the game’s interface and how well its controls suit the phone’s screen.

Physical controllers in supported games
Some mobile games support physical gamepads, arcade sticks, or racing wheels. Apple’s developer guidance describes third-party controller support, virtual controller overlays, and a controller-support badge that can appear on App Store listings. Support is determined by the game; a controller does not make every phone game playable with physical buttons. Apple’s game technologies documentation explains the platform’s controller options.
On iPhone, a wireless Xbox, PlayStation, or other Bluetooth controller can be paired through the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Apple notes that supported buttons and features vary by controller and app. A compatible wired controller may also work, but some combinations require an adapter. Check the game’s controller support and the controller’s fit with your phone before buying. Apple’s pairing instructions cover the connection steps.

How do you find games and use platform features?
On iPhone and other Apple devices
Apple describes its Games app as a place to discover games and see what friends are playing, with Game Center achievements and leaderboards and discovery of in-app events. Apple says the app is pre-installed on iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS 26 or later; availability and features depend on the operating system version. Apple’s Games app overview describes these features.
On Android
Google Play Games Sidekick can appear in select games installed through Google Play. Depending on availability, it can surface a player profile, achievements, Play Points offers, screenshots, screen recording, Do Not Disturb, and YouTube livestreaming. Can you play streamed or cloud games on a phone?
Cloud gaming can deliver a game to a phone over a network rather than requiring the game to run entirely as a local installation. Whether that works for you depends on the provider and your location, device, connection, account or subscription, and whether the title you want is in its catalog. These requirements differ by service, so check the provider’s current terms and compatibility information before subscribing or relying on access.
The UK Competition and Markets Authority’s July 2024 working paper examines cloud gaming services and mobile distribution requirements. Will your game progress transfer to a new phone?
Do not assume that it will. Google says some games autosave through Google Play Games when you are signed in, but not all games automatically save. On a new Android phone, using the same Google account may help only if the particular game supports that save system. The game developer and its account system determine whether progress can be restored or transferred, including between platforms. Google recommends contacting the developer about missing progress or game-account problems. Google’s guidance on restoring game data explains the limits.

- Game and platform: Confirm that the specific title is available for your operating system and region.
- Input: Decide whether touch controls suit you, and verify explicit controller support if you want physical controls.
- Social and discovery features: Check which store or platform features are available for your games and device.
- Progress continuity: Look for the game’s account, save, and transfer options before changing phones.
- Cloud access: Verify the provider’s country availability, supported devices or browsers, network requirements, catalog, and account conditions.
- Phone hardware: Screen size, sustained performance, battery, heat, and price can matter, but there is no single phone recommendation established here.
Those checks matter because “phone gaming” is not one uniform experience: a locally installed touch game, a controller-supported title, and a streamed game have different requirements.
