You can connect ChatGPT to Buffer through Buffer’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) server using OAuth. In ChatGPT, enable Developer mode, add Buffer with the server URL https://mcp.buffer.com/mcp, and authorize your Buffer account. Once connected, ChatGPT can help create and manage Buffer content; scheduled posts go into Buffer’s queue, where you can review them before they publish.
Connect ChatGPT to Buffer on the web
Buffer’s documented web connection uses its MCP server and OAuth; Buffer’s developer guide says this route does not require an API key. ChatGPT’s settings labels can change, so if a label differs, look for the current Apps or Connectors settings and the Developer mode option.
- Open ChatGPT settings. Go to Settings, then Apps or Connectors.
- Enable Developer mode. Find it under Advanced settings.
- Add Buffer. Create an app or connector named Buffer and enter
https://mcp.buffer.com/mcpas the MCP server URL. - Select OAuth and create the app. When prompted, sign in to Buffer and approve the requested access.
- Try a Buffer task in ChatGPT. Ask it to draft a post, check your queue, or save an idea. Review the result in Buffer before it is published.
Buffer’s setup instructions are at Buffer’s ChatGPT integration page; its developer guide also documents the endpoint and OAuth connection at Buffer Developers.
Connect Buffer to Codex CLI
Buffer also documents a command-line route for Codex CLI. Run:
#1 Best Overall
codex mcp add buffer --url https://mcp.buffer.com/mcp
A browser window opens so you can sign in to Buffer and approve access. This is a Codex CLI setup, not a command to run inside ChatGPT’s web interface. See Buffer’s integration instructions for the documented route.
What ChatGPT can do through Buffer
Buffer says an assistant connected through MCP can draft posts, schedule posts, check the queue, save ideas, and work with connected channels. For a scheduled post, Buffer describes content landing in the queue for review and editing before it goes live. Treat the queue as the final checkpoint: confirm the text, selected channel, and timing in Buffer before publication. Details are on Buffer’s MCP overview.
Buffer’s publishing workflow lets you select channels, compose content, customize it for each network, and choose a queue slot, a custom time, or immediate publication. The available publishing, analytics, and engagement features vary by channel; consult Buffer’s channel support guide rather than assuming every action works on every network.
ChatGPT integration versus Buffer’s AI Assistant
These are separate OpenAI-related workflows. The MCP connection lets ChatGPT work with your Buffer account. Buffer’s AI Assistant is a writing feature inside Buffer’s composer: it can brainstorm or draft copy and revise it by rephrasing, shortening, expanding, or changing tone. It does not set up the ChatGPT-to-Buffer connection. See Buffer’s AI Assistant guide.
| Question | ChatGPT connected through MCP | Buffer AI Assistant |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the work happen? | In ChatGPT, connected to Buffer through OAuth. | In Buffer’s composer. |
| What does it do? | Can draft and schedule posts, check the queue, save ideas, and work with connected channels, according to Buffer. | Helps draft, brainstorm, and revise copy. |
| What setup is needed? | Add Buffer’s MCP server and authorize with OAuth; no API key is required for the documented route. | No separate connection setup for the composer feature. |
| How does review work? | Scheduled content goes into Buffer’s queue for review before it goes live. | Generated or revised copy is used in a post in the composer. |
Plan and channel limits to know
Buffer says MCP access is available on all Buffer plans, including Free. That does not mean every plan can connect unlimited channels: Buffer’s support guide says Free supports up to three connected channels at once and has a lifetime limit of eight unique channels per social network. That lifetime limit does not apply to paid plans. Check the current channel guide for supported networks and feature-by-feature availability.
Buffer’s guide lists Facebook Pages, Instagram Business and Creator accounts, X/Twitter profiles, LinkedIn Pages and profiles, Pinterest, TikTok, Google Business Profiles, Start Pages, Mastodon, YouTube Shorts, Threads, Bluesky, and Substack. A channel being supported does not establish that publishing, analytics, and engagement tools are all available for it.

How Buffer’s public API relates to this connection
Buffer announced its public API on May 27, 2026, describing support for publishing, scheduling, and managing a social presence from other tools. Buffer said the API was available on every plan, including Free. That announcement is distinct from the specific ChatGPT setup above, which Buffer documents as an MCP connection using OAuth. Read the announcement at Buffer’s API announcement.
