Yes—web development can still be worth learning, especially if you want to build useful products, understand how websites work, or pursue a technical career. But learning it is an investment with uncertain returns, not a guaranteed route to a job. AI changes what beginners need to practice; it does not remove the need to understand, test, and maintain code.

What the job outlook says—and what it doesn’t

For the United States, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects employment for web developers and digital designers to grow 5% from 2025 to 2035, compared with 3% for all occupations. It estimates an average of 13,600 openings per year across that combined occupation. These figures are a broad occupational outlook, not a count of new entry-level jobs or a forecast for a particular city or applicant. Openings include replacement needs as well as job growth. BLS: Web Developers and Digital Designers

The BLS also names AI as a possible constraint: improving web development tools and increased AI use may improve productivity and let workers in other occupations handle some basic tasks, softening employment growth. The outlook is therefore positive but moderate, and it does not establish how AI will affect hiring in every country, local market, or entry-level segment.

The BLS reports a $92,650 median annual wage for U.S. web developers in May 2025. That is a median across workers and locations, not a beginner salary promise. Local pay and hiring conditions can differ substantially.

What AI changes for a beginner

AI tools can explain a concept, suggest code, or help interpret an error. They can also produce an answer that looks plausible but fails in a real project. In Stack Overflow’s 2025 Developer Survey, 46% of respondents said they distrust AI output accuracy, while 33% said they trust it; 66% reported frustration with solutions that were almost right but not quite. These are self-reported views from survey respondents, not a controlled measurement of AI’s effect on employment or learning. Stack Overflow 2025 Developer Survey: AI

For a learner, the practical implication is to treat generated code as a draft. You need enough understanding to judge whether it fits the problem, run it, spot defects, and change it safely. Ask AI to explain an error or compare approaches, then verify the answer in your own project rather than accepting it on appearance.

What to learn first

Start with the browser technologies that let you make and understand a complete page. MDN’s beginner learning path covers HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, as well as layout, accessibility, and debugging. MDN: Your first website

  1. HTML: Use it to structure readable content and forms. Learn how elements describe the meaning and organization of a page.
  2. CSS: Use it to style content and control layout. Practice responsive design so a page remains usable at different screen sizes.
  3. JavaScript: Use it to add interaction and learn how a browser behaves when users act on a page.
  4. Build and revise: Make small, complete sites, then improve them. Check the result at different screen sizes, test interactions, and work through bugs instead of only copying a finished solution.
  5. Explain your code: Be able to describe what each important part does and how you would change it. This is a useful check that you understand the result, whether you wrote it yourself or used AI assistance.

There is no reliable fixed timeline from beginner to employable in the sources cited here. Progress depends on your prior experience, the complexity of the work you pursue, and the opportunities available where you live.

Which kind of web development might fit you?

Web development includes different kinds of work. The BLS describes developers who focus on parts of a site as well as those who work across it. The following distinctions describe the work; the available figures do not rank these paths by earnings or hiring prospects.

  • Front end: Focus on the interface users see, including layout, browser behavior, accessibility, and visual detail.
  • Back end: Focus on application structure, data handling, and server-side behavior.
  • Broader software development: Explore adjacent software roles if you are interested in more than websites, while recognizing that this can require a wider skill set.

You do not need to choose a specialty before learning the basics. Making a few small projects can help you discover whether you prefer shaping the interface, building the underlying behavior, or working across both.

Do you need a degree to get started?

Not for every role. BLS says education requirements for web developers and digital designers range from a high school diploma to a bachelor’s degree. Some candidates may demonstrate their ability through prior work experience or projects. It identifies HTML as a core competency and notes that some employers also seek JavaScript or SQL. Requirements vary by position and employer, so check listings in the market where you plan to work. BLS: Web Developers and Digital Designers

For a beginner without a relevant credential, finished projects can help show what you can do. Keep examples of your work and be ready to explain the problem each project addresses, the choices you made, and how you would maintain it. A project or certificate does not guarantee a job, but demonstrated ability can matter where a specific credential is not required.

How to decide whether it is worth your time

Web development is more likely to be a good investment if you want to make things, are willing to work through debugging, and value skills that help you understand and improve websites—even if your first goal is not a developer job. If your only reason is an expectation of quick, guaranteed employment or a particular salary, the available evidence cannot support that expectation.

  • Try before spending much: Use beginner learning materials and build a small page before committing to a paid course or credential.
  • Measure progress by capability: Can you build a page, make it work at different sizes, fix a problem, and explain your choices?
  • Use AI without outsourcing understanding: Ask for explanations and suggestions, but test the result and make sure you can revise it.
  • Check your local market: U.S. occupational projections and wages do not determine hiring conditions or credential expectations elsewhere.
