If your Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con 2 or Pro Controller stopped pairing after an update, first check the console’s system software and dock connection, then reset and pair the controller again. The timing alone does not establish that the update caused the problem: Nintendo’s Switch 2 pairing guidance does not identify an update as a cause.

Start with the Switch 2 pairing checks

These steps apply to Nintendo Switch 2 and its Joy-Con 2 or Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller. Nintendo’s guidance covers wireless pairing problems and controllers that disconnect soon after pairing.

  1. Check for a console update. On the HOME Menu, open System Settings > System > System Update and follow any on-screen instructions.
  2. Check the dock’s HDMI cable. Nintendo specifies an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for the Switch 2 dock. If you changed the cable, confirm the replacement is that type. Nintendo notes that the original Nintendo Switch’s included HDMI cable is not an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable, and that using the wrong type may affect console and accessory performance. This is a check Nintendo recommends, not proof that the cable caused the pairing issue.
  3. Pair the controller again. From the HOME Menu, open Controllers > Change Grip Order. Press the controller’s SYNC button and follow the on-screen pairing prompts. Nintendo’s Switch 2 wireless pairing instructions describe this sequence after the dock cable check.

If the controller firmware update failed

If the problem is that a controller update did not finish or failed, use Nintendo Support Australia’s specific recovery sequence. The repair direction below is regional guidance; contact Nintendo support for your own location if the issue persists.

  1. Check that the console has the latest system update using System Settings > System > System Update.
  2. Restart the console: press the POWER button, then choose Power Options > Restart.
  3. Press the controller’s SYNC button once.
  4. Press another button on the controller to turn it back on.
  5. Try the controller update again. Nintendo says paired controllers update one at a time; if an update stops before finishing, try the update step again.

Nintendo Support Australia says that if the problem continues, the console and affected controller or controllers need to be returned for assessment. Service routes vary by country, so use Nintendo’s support channel for your region. See Nintendo Support Australia’s controller-update troubleshooting guidance.

If the problem followed Search for Controllers

This is a specific case, not a general fix for every pairing issue. Nintendo UK’s instructions apply when the issue follows the Search for Controllers feature, which requires the controller to have been paired already.

  1. Wait 30 seconds.
  2. Press the controller’s SYNC button once.
  3. Press A or another controller button to turn it back on.
  4. Pair it again from Controllers > Change Grip Order on the HOME Menu.

If the controller still cannot pair or respond, Nintendo UK says the affected controller needs repair. Read Nintendo UK’s guidance for controllers that do not respond after Search for Controllers.

Work out whether the controller or console needs service

If Joy-Con 2 is recognized but its player LEDs do not light, Nintendo suggests trying these checks:

  • Attach and detach the controllers a few times.
  • Reset the controller by pressing SYNC once, then press another button to turn it back on.
  • Update the controller firmware.
  • If possible, try another set of Joy-Con 2 with the console.

If another set works, Nintendo says the affected Joy-Con 2 needs service. If another set also has the problem—or you cannot try another set—Nintendo says the Joy-Con 2 and console may both need service. Nintendo’s Joy-Con 2 troubleshooting guidance explains this service diagnosis.

When to contact Nintendo instead of buying another controller

Contact Nintendo support for your region if the official reset and re-pair steps do not restore the connection, the controller update repeatedly fails, or the controller will not respond. A replacement set can help test whether a fault is limited to one controller, but buying one is not a guaranteed fix if the console is involved. Consider another set only after troubleshooting points to a controller fault.

Do not assume instructions for original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con apply to Joy-Con 2. Nintendo’s original Switch wireless-pairing page includes checks such as distance, wireless interference, battery charge, and game player limits; those are not presented here as confirmed Switch 2-specific steps. See Nintendo’s original Switch pairing guidance if you are troubleshooting that older console.
