Telegram documents animated profile pictures as square MPEG-4 videos, with a maximum resolution of 1080 × 1080 pixels and 800 × 800 recommended. It does not say that HEVC is unsupported or require H.264. Try your original clip first; if Telegram cannot find it or the upload fails, export a square MP4 as a compatibility troubleshooting step.
What Telegram supports for profile videos
Telegram’s Core API documentation describes animated profile pictures as square MPEG-4 videos. The maximum dimensions are 1080 × 1080 pixels, and Telegram recommends 800 × 800. Telegram also lets you choose a point in the video for the still image shown in chats; its 2020 profile-video announcement describes choosing any frame for that static picture.
Animated profile pictures are listed as a Telegram Premium feature. The official documentation does not specify a required codec, confirm that every Telegram client accepts HEVC, or provide an iPhone conversion recipe. It also does not establish a profile-video duration or file-size limit.

Try the original video, then convert if needed
- Keep your original. Make a separate export so you can return to the source if the crop or quality is unsatisfactory.
- Try the original HEVC clip in Telegram. If it appears in the profile-video picker and uploads successfully, conversion is unnecessary.
- If it is missing or the upload fails, make a square MP4 export. Crop the video to a square and keep its dimensions within Telegram’s documented 1080 × 1080 maximum; 800 × 800 is the recommended resolution.
- If the MP4 still fails, try H.264 as an alternate export codec. This is a compatibility-oriented troubleshooting option, not a Telegram requirement or guaranteed fix. Telegram does not publish a specific iPhone setting, bitrate, duration, audio rule, or file-size ceiling for this use.
- Review the result before saving it as your profile video. Check that the square crop keeps the subject in frame and select a frame that works as the static image.
A Telegram issue report describes one user’s H.264 video encountering an upload problem, with encoding or bitrate raised as possible factors. That example is file-specific and does not establish a universal format rule or prove that changing codecs will resolve every failure. See the Telegram issue report.

If the video is missing from Telegram’s iPhone picker
Check whether Telegram can access the video in Photos. On iPhone, review Telegram’s Photos permission in iOS Settings and confirm the clip is included in the available selection. If access is limited, you can test whether granting broader access makes the video appear.
A Telegram issue report documented a picker problem with limited Photos access, listed Full Access as a workaround, and records the issue as fixed in Telegram iOS 12.7.0. This applies to the versions involved in that report; it does not mean every current installation requires Full Access. Check that Telegram and iOS are up to date, and use only the Photos access level you are comfortable granting.

How to tell whether conversion helped
- Picker: Does Telegram display the original or exported clip?
- Upload: Does the upload complete, rather than failing or stalling?
- Crop: Does the square version preserve the intended composition?
- Static image: Does the selected frame look right when Telegram shows it in chats?
If an export does not solve the problem, try another compatible export rather than assuming HEVC alone is responsible. Telegram’s published guidance does not identify one converter, codec setting, or set of export values as universally best.
