When several coding agents are working in separate terminal tabs, the problem is no longer just starting them. It is knowing which one needs you. Eyup Ucmaz built termist to answer a practical question: “Which agent is waiting for me right now?”
Termist is a local terminal interface and background daemon for keeping track of agent sessions across projects and worktrees. Ucmaz’s account is also a useful look at what “vibe coding” can and cannot do: coding agents helped build the tool, but the product decisions and real-world checks remained his responsibility.
Why build a control panel for coding agents?
With multiple agent sessions open, attention becomes the scarce resource. A process may still be running, but that alone does not tell you whether the agent is working, waiting for an answer, or finished. Finding the session that needs a response can mean checking terminal tabs one by one.
Ucmaz describes termist as a small local control layer for that coordination problem. Rather than replacing a terminal, editor, or Git, it puts session status and common actions in one place so a developer can direct attention to the right agent.

What termist does
Termist presents sessions as cards with status indicators. Its documented categories include running, waiting, done, error, and disconnected. From the interface, a user can jump to a session that needs attention or send a follow-up prompt without first entering that session’s terminal pane. Sessions can remain alive after the TUI is closed, and the README describes resuming them after a restart.
The distinction between an agent’s state and its process matters: a live process does not necessarily mean the agent is waiting for input. Termist’s status signals come from hooks or integrations provided by the agents, rather than being inferred only from whether a process exists.
How the local architecture works
The background daemon owns the pseudo-terminals (PTYs) and persistent session state. The terminal UI attaches to the daemon through a local socket and renders the current sessions. Session data is stored locally in SQLite.

This design lets the UI close without necessarily ending the sessions it is monitoring. It also gives the daemon a place to retain state for resumption. The status model depends on each supported agent’s hook or plugin integration, so changes to those agents can affect how reliably termist recognizes session states.
How AI agents helped build it—and where the developer stayed in charge
Ucmaz says he used Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode extensively while designing, implementing, testing, and iterating on termist. In his account, the tools were especially helpful for scaffolding, repetitive implementation work, experiments, and trying UI variations.
They did not make the central product choices for him. He still had to decide what the tool should do, whether its statuses matched what was happening in a real session, and how process lifetimes, cancellation, and restart behavior should work. He also manually tried the actual command-line agents in a real terminal.

“The agent could generate a plausible implementation. I still had to decide whether it was the right implementation.”

That is the practical distinction in Ucmaz’s story: generated code can accelerate construction, but a plausible implementation is not proof that the product behavior is correct.
Who termist is for—and what it does not replace
Termist is aimed at developers who run supported coding-agent CLIs across multiple projects or worktrees and want a shared view of those sessions. The README lists Claude Code, Codex, and OpenCode. It says termist runs the installed agent CLIs and does not write into project repositories or the agents’ own configuration.

It is not presented as a replacement for a terminal emulator, editor, or Git. Its value proposition is narrower: visibility into concurrent sessions and a quicker way to find and respond to the one that needs attention.

The project README describes macOS, Linux, and Windows support and lists installation options that include shell scripts for macOS and Linux, PowerShell for Windows, prebuilt archives, and a source installation. Because these instructions can change between releases, check the termist repository for the current commands and release details before installing.
The article and the current project README use different maturity labels. Ucmaz called the software beta in his September 28, 2025 DEV Community article; the repository README inspected October 7, 2026 describes the public build as v0.1.0-alpha.1 and warns that rough edges should be expected. The repository’s current release information is the more useful guide to what is available now.

Ucmaz also cautions that Windows had received less real-world testing than macOS and Linux. More broadly, integrations rely on agent hooks that upstream CLI changes can affect, and terminal emulation and restart behavior need real-world use. These are reasons to treat status and session persistence as features to validate in your own workflow rather than assume they will be flawless in every setup.
The workflow question termist leaves open
A status grid can make it easier to spot the agent that needs input. Whether that actually reduces context switching depends on how a developer works: the grid could also make a large amount of concurrent activity more visible without making it easier to manage.
Ucmaz closes his DEV Community article with the question: “does a status grid reduce context switching, or does it just make the chaos more visible?” Termist is his response to the problem, not a measured demonstration that a dashboard improves everyone’s workflow.
