If Wikipedia will not load in Chrome, first check whether the problem affects just Wikipedia or other websites too. Then compare the page in an Incognito window and another browser; those quick tests help identify whether the cause is an extension, Chrome data, your connection, or the website.

Check whether Wikipedia or your connection is the problem

  1. Check the address. Make sure the Wikipedia URL is spelled correctly, then reload the page.
  2. Try another Wikipedia page. If one page fails but others load, the issue may be specific to that page.
  3. Open another website. If several sites will not load, check that your device is connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data and that the connection works. Google Chrome Help lists device settings, security software, network equipment, browser data and extensions, memory use, and website downtime as possible causes of loading errors. Google’s connection and loading troubleshooting steps cover these checks.

If Wikipedia is the only site failing, continue with the browser comparisons below. An outage is also possible, but the troubleshooting guidance cited here does not establish Wikipedia’s live status.

Compare Incognito mode and another browser

Open the same Wikipedia page in a Chrome Incognito window. If it loads there but not in a normal window, a Chrome extension or stored browsing data may be interfering.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In normal Chrome, open the extensions manager and turn off extensions.
  2. Reload Wikipedia. If it now works, turn extensions on one at a time, reloading between changes, to identify the one causing the problem.
  3. If disabling extensions does not help, consider deleting browsing data, including cookies and cached files. This removes stored site data and may sign you out of websites.

Try the same page in another browser, too. If it fails there as well, the cause may be your network or Wikipedia rather than Chrome. Google recommends restarting the modem and router for a persistent broader connection problem; if the connection otherwise works and the page continues to fail, the website may need attention. See Google Chrome Help’s guidance on Chrome crashes and pages that will not open.

Use Chrome’s error message to choose the next step

Chrome’s error text can help narrow down the cause. Google describes these common messages in its guide to Chrome error messages:

Chrome error What it indicates What to check
ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED The hostname could not be found or has a different IP address. Check Chrome’s Secure DNS setting as described below.
ERR_INTERNET_DISCONNECTED The device is not connected to the internet. Check Wi-Fi or mobile data and whether other sites load.
ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT or ERR_TIMED_OUT The page took too long to connect; the connection may be slow or the page busy. Check whether other sites load, then reload the page.
ERR_CONNECTION_RESET The connection was interrupted. Possible causes include an unstable connection, outdated Chrome, a VPN issue, or security software blocking the page. Check the connection, update Chrome, and review VPN or security software settings.

For a server-address lookup error, check Secure DNS

If Chrome reports a server IP address lookup problem, check its Secure DNS provider setting. Chrome’s automatic mode can fall back to an unencrypted lookup if it has trouble; a custom provider does not. A managed device or parental controls may restrict the setting. You can try turning Secure DNS off temporarily as a diagnostic step, then restore your preferred setting if it does not help. Google explains these controls in Manage Chrome safety and security.

Check security software, memory, and network equipment

  • Firewall or antivirus: Check whether your existing security software is blocking Chrome’s connection. Do not disable protection permanently; if you test a change, restore the protection afterward.
  • Low available memory: Close unused tabs and apps, and pause downloads that may be using device resources.
  • Temporary Chrome or device issue: Restart Chrome, then restart the computer if needed.
  • Connection problem across browsers or sites: Restart the modem and router if the problem persists across multiple pages or browsers.

These checks follow Google’s loading-error guidance and its Chrome troubleshooting advice.

Reset Chrome only if the simpler checks fail

Restoring Chrome settings to their original defaults can remove a configuration that is preventing Wikipedia from loading, but it also changes browser preferences. Google says the reset changes content settings, cookies and site data, extensions, and themes; saved bookmarks and passwords are not deleted or changed.
