You can practise speaking without Wi-Fi, but “offline AI” does not mean the same thing in every app. Some apps run both speech recognition and a conversational tutor on your phone; others offer offline recognition drills but need internet for AI conversation. Before relying on one, check that your language, phone and practice features work offline, download any required files over Wi-Fi, and test the app in airplane mode.
What offline AI can—and cannot—do
Offline speaking tools vary by app, language and device. One app may handle listening, speech recognition and tutor replies locally. Another may recognize spoken practice offline while keeping generative conversation online. Some require a substantial model or voice-pack download, and newer hardware may be necessary.
That distinction matters in a place with unreliable connectivity: an app’s online language list does not establish that those languages work offline. Nor does an offline label guarantee that every feature works without a connection. Check each feature separately, especially speech recognition, generated replies, saved history and sync.

A short offline speaking routine
Use a situation you expect to encounter, such as introducing yourself, ordering food or asking for directions. Keep the routine manageable and repeat it regularly; the steps below are a practical format, not a scientifically established training dose.
- Set one immediate goal. Choose a situation and a small outcome, such as being able to ask for a table or explain where you are going.
- Listen, then speak. Play a short phrase and repeat it aloud. If the app has shadowing, follow along with a few lines rather than spending the whole session listening passively.
- Take conversational turns. Start a role-play or open conversation. Try to respond in complete turns, and ask for a simpler rephrasing if you get stuck.
- Review one or two corrections. Treat them as prompts to investigate, not definitive judgments. Say an improved version aloud and try it again in a later exchange.
- Repeat the practice. Return to the same situation in another short session, or choose a new one once you can handle the first more comfortably.
For example, in a restaurant role-play, listen to a greeting, answer as the customer, ask for a dish, and respond to a follow-up question. If a correction appears, practise that phrase aloud and use it again in the next turn.

The following details come from product-owner pages accessed October 7, 2026. Features, availability and requirements can change; these descriptions are not independent accuracy tests or evidence that an app improves learning.

App listings and support pages are the basis for these feature descriptions; they do not establish how accurately an app recognizes speech or whether its feedback leads to better learning outcomes.
Check your app before travelling
Do the setup and a real offline test while you still have reliable internet. A listing can change, and a feature that works online may not be available after you disconnect.
- Check language availability. Look for the language specifically in the app’s offline mode, not only in its general language list.
- Check device compatibility. Verify the minimum phone model, operating-system version and memory requirements in the current app listing or help page. BetterSpeak, for example, identifies iPhone 15 Pro models and newer devices for its offline mode; EdgeLingo lists different requirements.
- Check what runs locally. Determine whether speech recognition and the tutor’s replies both work offline, or whether the app only supports local drills. Confirm whether optional AI conversation requires a network connection.
- Plan storage and downloads. Check the model or voice-pack size and available space, then download everything on Wi-Fi. The product-published figures above are approximately 2.9 GB for BetterSpeak’s package, about 250–760 MB for some one-time EdgeLingo voice packs, and about 3 GB for SpeakLocal’s initial download; these are specifications, not learning results.
- Open the app and test it disconnected. Complete setup, open the app at least once, switch on airplane mode and try a short conversation or drill. Check that audio plays, your speech is recognized, and the response appears without connectivity.
- Review privacy and sync settings. Find out what happens to session history, sync, photographs or text when cloud features are enabled. Treat privacy statements in listings as developer disclosures, not independent audits.
A compatible phone can enable local models, but these examples do not show that every learner needs a hardware upgrade. Check support on the device you already own before considering a new one.

How to interpret corrections and product claims
Speech recognition estimates what it heard; it does not establish that you made a pronunciation error. Accents, background noise, microphone quality and the model’s language support can all affect recognition. If a response seems wrong, repeat the phrase, compare it with a reliable reference, or try another formulation rather than memorizing the app’s correction as unquestionable.
Likewise, app features are not proof of teaching effectiveness. EdgeLingo’s listing describes a sequence of shadowing, conversation and revisiting corrections, and says corrections carry into later practice. That is a product feature description, not independent evidence of efficacy. Counts such as EdgeLingo’s 83 scenarios or Jai Tutor’s 1,000+ scenarios describe listed content, not learning gains.
The named app descriptions do not provide an independent comparison of recognition accuracy, correction quality or learning outcomes. Use them to understand what each developer says is available, then test the exact language and offline workflow you intend to use.
