For GitHub sign-in in a native Expo app, two callback URLs do different jobs: GitHub sends the OAuth response to Supabase, and Supabase then redirects the user back into your app. Configure both, handle the app’s deep link, and exchange or set the returned credentials into a Supabase session. This guide is organized as three diagnostic checkpoints—not a verified account of three specific failures.
Which callback URL goes in GitHub, and which goes in Supabase?
There are two redirects in this flow, and they are not interchangeable:
- GitHub to Supabase: In the GitHub OAuth App, set the Authorization callback URL to the exact callback URL shown in your Supabase project’s GitHub provider settings. Then enter the GitHub client ID and secret in Supabase Auth. Supabase documents the provider setup in its GitHub login guide.
- Supabase to your Expo app: Register a URL scheme in the Expo app, allow the matching redirect URI in Supabase Auth URL Configuration, and use that URI as
redirectTowhen starting sign-in. Supabase’s native mobile deep-link guide shows the overall pattern. Itscom.supabase://**value is an example, not a URI to copy blindly; use the scheme and callback path appropriate to your app.
For local Supabase CLI auth, the documented GitHub callback is http://localhost:54321/auth/v1/callback. Make sure the GitHub OAuth App is configured for the environment you are testing rather than assuming its hosted and local callbacks are the same.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Checkpoint 1: Why doesn’t GitHub send me back to my Expo app?
GitHub’s callback should point to Supabase—not directly to the Expo scheme. After Supabase finishes the provider exchange, Supabase uses the requested redirectTo to send the user back to the app. A callback mismatch at either leg can break the handoff.

- Compare the GitHub Authorization callback URL character for character with the callback displayed in the Supabase project’s GitHub provider settings.
- Compare the runtime
redirectTowith the redirect allowlist in Supabase Auth URL Configuration, including scheme and path. - Confirm the scheme is registered in Expo app configuration and that the installed development or standalone build was built with that scheme.
- Test the current installed build on the actual platform. Do not assume Expo Go, iOS, and Android handle custom schemes identically.
Supabase recommends universal links for the best user experience, while noting that they require more elaborate setup. A custom scheme is also an option; a universal link is not a blanket requirement. Consult current Expo documentation when implementing universal links or relying on Expo-version-specific behavior.
Checkpoint 2: Why does the callback open the app but leave me signed out?
Opening the app confirms only that a link handoff occurred. The callback may contain an error, or the app may not have completed the session step. Supabase notes that auth failures can return error details in URL fragments, so inspect the callback URL rather than treating an app-open event as a successful login.

Start OAuth in a native browser session
For native sign-in, Supabase’s example uses signInWithOAuth with provider github, supplies a redirect URI, and sets skipBrowserRedirect: true. The app then opens the returned authorization URL using an Expo auth browser session. Check the Supabase call’s returned error before opening the browser.
const { data, error } = await supabase.auth.signInWithOAuth({
provider: 'github',
options: {
redirectTo,
skipBrowserRedirect: true,
},
})
if (error) throw error
// Open data.url in an Expo auth browser session, then handle its return URL.
Generate redirectTo with Expo linking or auth-session utilities so it matches the scheme and path registered in both Expo and Supabase. The code above starts the flow; it does not, by itself, process the callback or establish a session.

Handle the callback and establish the session
Handle callback URLs whether the app is already running or is launched from a closed state. Parse the URL for auth errors first. Then complete the session handling that matches the response flow configured for the project. Supabase’s mobile example parses callback parameters and sets the session from access and refresh tokens when those are the returned values. Other response flows may require a code exchange instead; do not assume a token-based example fits every configuration. Update the signed-in UI only after Supabase confirms a session.
Checkpoint 3: Why is the session lost or unable to refresh?
On native React Native, configure persistence and token refresh explicitly. Supabase’s React Native quickstart uses the URL polyfill, AsyncStorage for native storage, persistSession: true, autoRefreshToken: true, and detectSessionInUrl: false. It also ties refresh start and stop to app foreground state.

- TURN USB-A PORTS INTO USB-C: Convert the USB-A ports on your laptops, wall chargers, car chargers, hubs, or power banks into USB-C inputs for everyday charging and data transfer. Just plug the adapter into a USB-A port and connect your USB-C cable to charge or sync compatible devices.
- DESIGNED FOR USB 2.0 CHARGING & SYNC (NO VIDEO): Supports USB 2.0 data transfer up to 480 Mbps and charging up to 5V/2A, depending on your USB-A power source. Not for HDMI, DisplayPort, VGA, or any other type of video output, and not for driving a dock’s main USB-C host cable or high-power USB-C fast-charging protocols (PD/PPS).
- ALUMINUM ALLOY HOUSING: Built with an aluminum alloy shell that helps with heat dissipation during use compared to plastic adapters. The metal body surrounds the internal USB 2.0 components and supports stable charging and data transfer during everyday plug-in, unplugging, and device connections.
- COMPACT ENOUGH TO LEAVE PLUGGED IN: Low-profile, lightweight design that sits close to the USB-A port, so it can stay plugged into your laptop, charger, or hub without getting in the way. Reduces wear from constant plugging/unplugging and lowers the chance of misplacing the adapter.
- VERSATILE USB-C ACCESSORY COMPATIBILITY: Works with USB-C cables, phones, tablets, earphones, flash drives, card readers, wireless adapters, and other low-power USB-C accessories. A simple, practical add-on to keep your older USB-A gear useful in a USB-C world.

Use the publishable key intended for client applications; never put a service-role secret in an app distributed to users. The configuration pattern is documented in Supabase’s React Native quickstart.

Choose a return-link approach and environment setup
| Approach | Setup and trade-off | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| Custom URL scheme | Register the scheme in Expo, include the matching URI in Supabase’s redirect allowlist, and build/install the app with that scheme. Supabase documents it as an option. | A direct app return without domain ownership or verification setup. |
| Universal links | Supabase recommends this for the best user experience, but says setup is more elaborate. Follow current Expo platform guidance for domain association and app configuration. | When the additional setup is warranted for a production sign-in experience. |
For development, staging, and production, separate schemes or callback registrations can make it easier to identify which installed app and backend are involved. Supabase allows multiple redirects, but does not prescribe a single Expo project structure; treat environment separation as an implementation choice and keep each environment’s GitHub and Supabase settings aligned.

Diagnose the failure in order
- Provider callback mismatch: Compare GitHub’s Authorization callback URL with the exact Supabase provider callback for the environment under test.
- Rejected or unexpected app redirect: Compare the app’s runtime
redirectTowith Supabase’s Auth URL allowlist, including the scheme and path. Remember that this is separate from GitHub’s callback to Supabase. - Browser finishes but the app does not open: Verify the Expo scheme, rebuild with it, and install the current build on the test device.
- App opens but the user is signed out: Inspect callback parameters for errors, complete the session exchange or token-based session step appropriate to the flow, and verify native storage configuration.
- Sign-in works but the session disappears or stops refreshing: Check AsyncStorage persistence and ensure auto-refresh starts while the app is active.
- Hosted works but local auth fails, or the reverse: Verify GitHub is configured with the callback for the environment currently being tested; local Supabase CLI auth uses a distinct documented callback.
