PFD stands for personal flotation device. In everyday boating conversation, people often use “PFD” and “life jacket” to mean the same thing. The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), however, distinguishes a life jacket that can support a person face-up regardless of their physical condition from a buoyancy aid that depends on the wearer moving or positioning themselves to keep their face clear of the water. Check a device’s label and intended-use instructions rather than relying on the name alone.

What does PFD stand for?

PFD means personal flotation device: equipment designed to help keep a person afloat. It is the broad category term. A wearable boating PFD is commonly called a life jacket, but devices within the category can differ in design, performance, and intended use. The USCG explains these distinctions in its life-jacket guidance.

Is a PFD the same as a life jacket?

In casual use, often. In USCG terminology, not always. The agency distinguishes a life jacket, which provides face-up support in the water regardless of a person’s physical condition, from a buoyancy aid, which relies on the wearer making swimming or postural movements to keep their face clear. That difference matters if the wearer cannot swim, is injured, or becomes unconscious. A product’s label and instructions are the practical guide to what it is designed to do.

What types of PFDs are there?

USCG guidance describes devices by construction and intended performance. The categories are not a simple ladder from poor to best; the right choice depends on the wearer and activity.

BLUESTORM Cirrus26 Inflatable PFD Life Jackets for Adults | US Coast Guard Approved Automatic Life Vest w/Manual Override Convertibility (Hi Vis)
  • US COAST GUARD-APPROVED TYPE V PFD: This USCG-approved Type 5 life jacket has Type 3 performance. This life vest inflates automatically upon water immersion via a replaceable CO2 cylinder (includes 1 cylinder with purchase) or manually with a pull of the “jerk to inflate” cord or back-up oral inflation tube.
  • VERSATILE & COMFORTABLE: Perfect for paddleboarding, fishing, sailing, kayaking, angling, boating, and other water activities. Internal spare CO2 cylinder pocket and accessory attachment point keeps gear secure.
  • LIGHTWEIGHT & COOL: This life preserver's ergonomic collar and mesh upper back strap are great for all-day comfort; the mesh back strap helps pull the collar down and away from the neck while the long shell design puts the secure waist belt in a lower, more comfortable position on the body.
  • MANUAL ONLY CONVERSION CAP: Easily locks into Manual Only inflation mode for times the PFD will be submerged in water (Duck Hunters, Dock and Shore Workers). Great for paddlers, waterfowl hunters, or where the vest may be submerged in a non-life-threatening situation.
  • 2X HIGHER MINIMUM BUOYANCY: The Cirrus offers an outstanding 26 lbs of buoyancy, a 2.x higher rating than Type 3 foam vest life jackets.
  • Inherent flotation: Buoyancy is built into the device, commonly with foam.
  • Inflatable: Flotation is supplied by an inflation system; follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use and upkeep.
  • Hybrid: Combines inherent flotation with an inflatable component.
  • Special-purpose: Intended for particular activities or conditions, which may come with use restrictions.

USCG labels also use performance types or levels. Read the actual label and restrictions rather than treating a number as a quality ranking or assuming every device suits every boating situation.

What type of life jacket do I need for boating?

Choose by the device’s labeled function and restrictions, the wearer, and the conditions—not by the broad term “PFD.” Before buying or heading out, check:

  • Activity and conditions: Is it labeled or approved for the activity, such as general boating or paddling? Observe any restricted-use directions.
  • Wearer and size: Match the label’s size range to the person. Adult equipment may not fit a child, and swimming ability is relevant to the choice.
  • Fit and wearability: It should fit securely and be practical for the wearer to keep on. A PFD cannot help if it is not worn or is fitted incorrectly.
  • Maintenance: Consider whether you can perform the inspections or manufacturer-directed servicing the device requires.

The USCG recommends trying a PFD in the water to check that it keeps the wearer’s airway clear. Its guidance puts the practical point plainly: “The best USCG Approved lifejacket or buoyancy aid is the one you will wear.”

What are the U.S. boating requirements?

These are general U.S. federal requirements as summarized by the USCG, not a substitute for checking current rules for your location and vessel. The USCG’s boating safety FAQs say that each person aboard generally needs a Coast Guard-approved wearable life jacket in good, serviceable condition and of appropriate size. Boats greater than 16 feet generally need an approved throwable device, with an exception described for canoes and kayaks.

Under the federal overview, children under 13 on a vessel underway generally must wear an approved wearable life jacket unless they are below deck or in an enclosed cabin. State requirements may add to or differ from these rules, including rules based on age, vessel, or activity. Check your state boating authority’s current requirements. Federal carriage rules do not mean every adult must wear a PFD in every circumstance; the USCG nevertheless recommends wearing an approved wearable PFD while underway.

Why wearing a PFD matters

In the USCG Boating Safety Division’s 2024 figures, 76% of fatal boating-incident victims drowned where cause of death was known, and 87% of fatal boating-incident victims were not wearing a PFD where PFD use was known. These percentages apply only to cases where the respective information was known; they are not estimates of risk per trip or per person.

How should you inspect and maintain a PFD?

Foam-filled devices

The USCG advises inspecting foam-filled devices for wear and buoyancy at least annually. Look for damage or deterioration that could affect serviceability, and follow the device’s label and manufacturer guidance.

Inflatable devices

Inflatables need manufacturer-directed maintenance, including checks that their inflation components are serviceable. If a component needs replacement, use parts compatible with the exact device model and follow its instructions; a generic cylinder or rearming kit may not fit.
