Restate offers a documented single-node deployment that can be a simpler starting point when its service model fits your application. Temporal’s single binary is its CLI development server, not its production architecture: production Temporal uses a Temporal Service, either managed by Temporal Cloud or self-hosted. Compare production with production, and choose based on workload semantics, topology, and who will operate the service—not an assumed performance win.
First, distinguish the development server from production
Temporal’s CLI development server is for local development. Temporal’s production deployment guidance explicitly calls for a production-ready Temporal Service. The platform consists of that service and application Worker Processes; the service includes the Temporal Server and a database, while customers host and operate workers. See Temporal’s production deployment guidance and its architecture overview.
Restate documents a single-node deployment as well as approaches using Docker Compose and Kubernetes, with guidance for scaling to multiple nodes. These are deployment options, not evidence that a single node will meet every production availability or recovery requirement. Start from the topology your workload needs, then account for what your team can operate. The Restate deployment guides describe the available paths.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

Deployment size is only useful if the engine’s execution model fits the workload. Restate distinguishes among three service types:
#1 Best Overall
- 【Powerful Load-bearing】12U Network Rack Open Frame is constructed from durable cold rolled steel; Rack shelf supports enhance stability, wall-mounted capacity of 130lbs, the ground-mounted up to 260lbs
- 【Considerate Designs】Open-frame layout, including a top panel adding space, anti-slip shelf stops fixing devices and compatible racks for stack and expansion to meet requirements of home server rack
- 【Complete Accessories】A 12U open frame server rack, two ventilated shelves, four shelf stops, four velcro straps and a set of equipment mounting screws
- 【Versatile Application】Ideal for space-efficient multi-device setups in warehouses, retail, classrooms, offices and more; Excellent choices as AV Rack/IT Rack
- 【Effortless Setup】 Network Rack includes hardware, a comprehensive manual, mounting hole drilling template and an online assembly video to simplify setup
- Basic services: stateless handlers.
- Virtual objects: keyed state with single-writer consistency.
- Workflows: multi-step processes.
These are different programming and state semantics, not interchangeable deployment labels. Restate documents running services on serverless platforms, containers, Kubernetes, or dedicated servers. Review the Restate service types and map the needed state, coordination, and process behavior to the right type before deciding whether a single node is enough.
Temporal’s production design separates the Temporal Service from application workers. If you choose self-hosted Temporal, you take responsibility for deploying the service and its supporting components while also operating your worker processes. A local CLI server can help with development, but it does not answer how to deploy or scale the production service.

When a lighter Restate start makes sense
A single-node Restate deployment is worth considering when the workload fits Restate’s service model and your operational constraints favor a modest initial topology. It gives a concrete route to begin before moving to a multi-node deployment if requirements call for it. That is a deployment-fit argument, not a claim that Restate is universally faster, more available, or cheaper.
Before relying on one node in production, decide what downtime, recovery behavior, and growth the application can tolerate. If those requirements exceed what the chosen topology provides, use Restate’s multi-node guidance and validate the architecture against the workload. The documentation establishes that the scaling path exists; it does not establish a universal threshold at which a single node stops being adequate.

- Adjustable Depth: 23-40'' adjustable depth is used for servers and network equipment, ensuring enough space for AV equipment, components, and cabling, while allowing you to access ports and equipment from multiple sides.
- Strong Load Capacity: Ground-Mounted Load Capacity: 500 lbs, Wall-Mounted Load Capacity: 150 lbs. The av rack is made of carbon steel for better weldability performance and can help save space while meeting your need to place multiple devices.
- User-friendly Design: Ergonomic design makes the open frame av rack easier to use. The additional top panel is able to place other items with more available space. Roller design moves anywhere and anytime, is convenient, and is more energy-saving.
- Complete Accessories: We provide the accessories you need, including 2 x Pallets, 145 x M5*10 Cross Head Screws, 4 x Casters, 4 x M10*50 Expansion Screws,10 x M6*12 Cage Nuts, 1 x Grounding Wire, 1 x User Manual.
- Wide Application: The server rack wall mount maximizes the use of available space, suitable for retail venues, classrooms, offices, and other places where space is limited.
What self-hosting Temporal asks your team to operate
Temporal can be self-hosted, but production readiness involves more than starting a server. Its self-hosted guidance covers Docker, Kubernetes, or manual deployment and the operational work around deployment, persistence and visibility storage, security, monitoring, upgrades, and replication. The self-hosted guide and configuration reference cover components and configuration areas including persistence and visibility stores, cluster membership, metrics, profiling, TLS, authorization, and cluster replication.
For teams that do not want to run that infrastructure, Temporal Cloud is the managed option. Managed service shifts service operations to Temporal, while application workers remain the customer’s responsibility. Compare this operational division with Restate’s deployment choices rather than treating a development binary as an equivalent production alternative.

Availability and latency figures are not a head-to-head comparison
Temporal’s current SLO documentation, accessed in 2026, lists a 99.99% all-Namespace uptime SLO and a 200 ms p99 per-region Worker-request latency SLO. The uptime figure is an SLO, not a blanket contractual availability promise for every API. Temporal’s August 2026 reported latency table lists 78 ms p99 for StartWorkflowExecution. These figures describe Temporal Cloud measurements or objectives; they do not predict a particular application’s results or show that Temporal outperforms Restate. See Temporal Cloud SLOs.

A practical decision checklist
- Choose the workload model: identify whether the application needs stateless handlers, keyed single-writer state, or multi-step workflows, and verify the engine’s documented semantics.
- Set production requirements: define availability, recovery, and scaling needs before selecting single-node or multi-node topology.
- Assign operational ownership: decide whether your team will run service infrastructure and workers, or whether a managed Temporal Service better fits your capacity.
- Compare equivalent environments: evaluate production Restate against production Temporal, not Restate deployment options against Temporal’s local development server.
- Validate with your workload: use application-specific testing and operational review; published Temporal Cloud SLOs are not a Restate comparison or a guarantee for your application.
