WhatsApp does not publish a single pixel size for photos. Its consumer Help Center describes a Standard or HD quality choice and says nothing about a target resolution, while the 5 MB image limit people often quote comes from the Business Platform Cloud API, which is a developer constraint and does not govern ordinary chats. The practical answer is to decide where the photo is going, choose dimensions and format for that destination, and then check the file you actually produced.
Which size rule applies to your photo
The phrase “WhatsApp image size” covers several different surfaces, and each one has different documented behavior. The table below separates what WhatsApp’s public material establishes from what it leaves open.

Two things follow from the table. First, if your goal is a photo that looks sharp in a normal chat, you are choosing a quality setting, not a dimension. Second, if you are building software that uploads images to the Cloud API, the 5 MB and MIME-type limits matter, but they belong to that API and should not be applied to a personal message.
Standard versus HD in chat
WhatsApp Help Center’s wording on the trade-off is direct: “Standard quality photos use less data and are sent faster than HD quality photos.” The same material describes HD as clearer, with higher data use and longer sending time. Those are the only trade-offs WhatsApp describes for this choice. Its public messaging page also advertises Full HD photos and videos, which describes the product in general terms and does not give a file size or resolution for a specific send.

Use these axes when you decide which option to recommend:
- Visual clarity: HD is described as clearer than Standard in the supported chat workflow.
- Data and time: Standard uses less data and sends faster; HD uses more data and takes longer.
- Connection quality: WhatsApp says a weak connection affects media quality even when HD is selected.
- Destination: HD does not apply to status updates or profile pictures, so the chat setting is irrelevant there.
Setting HD quality
According to the WhatsApp Help Center, the default upload quality is changed here. Menu names can differ between platforms and app versions, so treat these labels as the starting point:
- Open WhatsApp and tap the Settings icon.
- Go to Storage and data.
- Open Media upload quality and choose HD if you want HD to be the default.
A photo that has already been sent cannot be upgraded in place. The Help Center’s advice is to send it again in HD. If you need the higher-quality option only once, choose it at send time instead of changing the default.

What the Cloud API limit covers
The Business Platform media documentation sets out a narrower rule for developers. It lists two image MIME types, image/jpeg and image/png, and a 5 MB limit for the image media type. That is a limit on what the API accepts for upload. It is not a statement about how WhatsApp treats a photo in a consumer chat, and it does not describe pixel dimensions.
- Confirm the API version you are targeting before you hard-code the limit.
- Convert other formats such as WebP to JPEG or PNG before upload, because only those two types are listed.
- Keep a safety margin under 5 MB in your own validation, since the documented figure is the ceiling rather than a target.
Building a client-side resizer
If you are writing a browser tool that prepares photos before a user sends them, the job is to produce an image with predictable dimensions, a known format, and a size you have measured. The steps below assume the target size and quality are application settings, not WhatsApp requirements.
Step 1: Read the file locally
Accept only files whose type is an image, and decide what happens to anything else. Keep the original file in memory or on disk until the user accepts the converted version, so a poor result can be discarded without re-selecting the photo.

Step 2: Decode with orientation respected
Call createImageBitmap() on the Blob. Its default orientation behavior follows EXIF orientation metadata, which prevents phone photos from appearing rotated after you redraw them. Per MDN Web Docs, the method also accepts resizing options.

If a destination has a required size, use it. Otherwise, pick a rule and state it to the user: fit the image inside a maximum width and height while preserving aspect ratio, or crop to a fixed rectangle and say what gets removed. Avoid stretching the image to a fixed box, since that distorts faces and text.
Step 4: Draw to a canvas at the output size
Set the canvas width and height to the final pixel dimensions, draw the bitmap into it, and then call close() on the bitmap to release its memory.

Step 5: Encode to a Blob and check the result
HTMLCanvasElement.toBlob() accepts a MIME type and a quality value for lossy formats. If you omit the type, or request one the browser cannot encode, the browser falls back to PNG. PNG is the only format every browser is required to encode, so JPEG and WebP support must be tested at runtime rather than assumed. After encoding, read blob.type and blob.size. If the type did not take, either report it or retry with a format that worked.
Step 6: Tune quality against a preview and a byte budget
The quality value is an encoder hint within a documented range, not a promise of a particular file size. Images and browsers differ, so there is no single quality number that is best everywhere. Compare a visual preview at the quality you chose and adjust until the size fits your limit.

Work in a worker
Inside a Web Worker, OffscreenCanvas.convertToBlob() provides a Promise-based export and accepts type and quality options. The same format check and size check apply.
Choosing the output format
- JPEG is lossy and has no alpha channel. It suits photographs where transparency is not needed.
- PNG is lossless and keeps transparency, but files are usually larger for photographs.
- WebP supports both lossy and lossless compression and alpha, as defined in IETF RFC 9649. Confirm that the browser you target can encode it before you depend on it, and convert to JPEG or PNG when the destination requires one of those.
The canvas export also reports a resolution of 96 dpi for formats that carry resolution metadata, according to MDN Web Docs. That value does not set pixel dimensions or on-screen size, which are determined by the width and height you draw.
What is not established
WhatsApp has not published a standard consumer photo dimension, a compression ratio, or a typical delivered file size for chat photos, and this article does not supply substitute figures. Any “best WhatsApp dimensions” list you find is unofficial unless it names the surface, app version, and date it was tested. If your product depends on a specific result after sending, verify it on the app and version your users run.
