What’s the difference between a forward proxy and a reverse proxy? A forward proxy stands between clients and destinations they access; a reverse proxy stands between clients and the servers that provide a service. The quickest way to tell them apart is to ask whose side the proxy represents: clients for a forward proxy, servers or services for a reverse proxy.

How the request paths differ

Both are intermediaries: a proxy can forward requests and responses, and may also cache or modify them. The distinction is its position in the traffic path and which party it serves.

Forward proxy: client-facing egress

Client(s) → Forward proxy → Internet destination

A client, organization, or network operator configures or selects a forward proxy. The proxy sends the client’s outbound request toward an external destination. The destination may see the proxy’s address rather than the client’s, depending on the protocol and configuration. MDN describes proxy roles and their use in mediating requests in its guide to proxies and tunneling.

Reverse proxy: service-facing ingress

Client → Reverse proxy → Backend/origin server(s)

A reverse proxy is presented as the endpoint for a service. It receives incoming requests and forwards them to one or more backend or origin servers, then returns the response to the client. NGINX documents this upstream request-and-response flow in its reverse-proxy guide. Cloudflare provides a managed example in which proxied web traffic passes through its edge to an origin in its overview of how its network works.

Forward proxy vs. reverse proxy at a glance

Question Forward proxy Reverse proxy
Whom does it represent? A client or group of clients A server, service, or group of origin servers
Where does it sit? Between clients and external destinations In front of the service’s origin servers
Which traffic path? Outbound client requests (egress) Inbound requests for a service (ingress)
Typical objectives Centralize or regulate client access to external resources; sometimes mask the client address seen by a destination Route or balance requests, cache or compress content, and centralize selected security or TLS functions
Who usually administers it? The client, an organization, or a network operator The service or application operator, or a managed edge provider

These are common patterns, not requirements for every deployment. The proxy’s protocol layer and configuration determine which functions it performs. MDN’s proxy-server glossary entry and HTTP overview describe proxy functions that can include caching, filtering, load balancing, authentication, and logging.

What each proxy can do—and what it does not guarantee

Forward proxies mediate client access

A forward proxy can give an organization a point to control or regulate clients’ access to outside resources. Depending on the setup, external destinations may see the proxy’s address instead of the individual client’s. That is not the same as guaranteed anonymity: identity information, logging, trust in the operator, and whether traffic is tunneled all matter. NGINX’s HTTP CONNECT forward-proxy documentation describes a configuration for client access to external resources; its tunnel can carry HTTPS and other protocols.

Reverse proxies add configured service-side functions

A reverse proxy can distribute requests among servers, cache static content, compress responses, or handle selected authentication and TLS functions. These capabilities depend on how it is configured; placing a proxy in the path does not automatically enable them. A reverse proxy may also obscure an origin address, but hiding that address or terminating TLS at the proxy does not by itself make an application secure. Security depends on the controls in place and on how traffic is trusted between the proxy and the origin. Cloudflare describes origin-address concealment and proxy-based protections in the context of its own service, not as a guarantee for every reverse-proxy deployment.

Which one should you use?

  • Choose a forward proxy when the goal is to manage or mediate outbound access for clients, such as an organization’s users reaching external resources.
  • Choose a reverse proxy when the goal is to accept requests for a public-facing service and route them to its backend servers, potentially adding configured functions such as caching or load balancing.

The deciding factor is traffic direction and control objective—not a difference in the basic idea of forwarding. A deployment can also use both: a forward proxy for clients’ egress and a reverse proxy for a service’s ingress, each serving a different side of the connection.

Examples in NGINX and Cloudflare

NGINX

NGINX documents reverse-proxy routing to HTTP and non-HTTP upstreams. Its separate HTTP CONNECT forward-proxy guide is specifically for NGINX Plus R36 and later; it is not evidence that every NGINX distribution supports that feature. Check the applicable product version and requirements before using that configuration.

Cloudflare

Cloudflare documents a managed reverse-proxy pattern for proxied HTTP and HTTPS traffic: requests pass through its edge toward an origin. Its documentation describes use cases including load balancing, caching, attack mitigation, and TLS handling. This is an example of a managed service deployment, distinct from operating a reverse proxy yourself.
