Fiber laser cutting is changing metal manufacturing by giving fabricators a precise, adaptable way to process sheet, tube and other metal forms. Its value is not determined by laser power alone: material, thickness, part geometry, process settings, handling equipment and safety controls all affect whether a system suits a production job.

How fiber laser cutting works

A fiber laser delivers laser energy through an optical fiber and focuses it into a small spot on the workpiece. The concentrated energy makes it possible to cut metal with high precision. Fujikura attributes that precision to beam quality and the energy density created by focusing the spot.

Fiber lasers can be an efficient alternative to CO2 lasers or plasma cutting in some metal-cutting applications, but those other technologies remain in use for jobs where they fit. Claims of lower processing time or greater efficiency are application-dependent, not guaranteed savings for every manufacturer.

How thick of metal can a fiber laser cut?

Maximum thickness depends on the material and the specific equipment and process. Fujikura publishes the following maximum-thickness examples for its 3 kW and 6 kW oscillator configurations:

#1 Best Overall
Monport 60W Fiber Laser Engraver, Fiber Laser Marking Machine with Red Dot Pointer, LightBurn Compatible 5.9"x5.9" Metal Etching Machine for Metal Marking with 100000 Hour Lifespan BSLcad Included
  • Brand New Integrated Mini Fiber Laser: The brand new Monport fiber marking machine has a smaller size and lighter weight; Simultaneously maintaining the original high performance and a lifespan of up to 100000 hours. The fiber laser can engrave all metals. (gold, silver, copper, stainless steel, brass, titanium, etc.)
  • Faster and More Accurate: The newly customized galvanometer system is equipped with more expensive silicon material reflectors, allowing for a maximum speed of 10000mm/s. Monport has also customized an F-theta field mirror, which, together with the entire marking system, can achieve a carving accuracy of 0.01mm.
  • Just Right Working Area: For a 60W Fiber Laser, an area of 150*150mm is optimal, as excessive engraving area may result in poor engraving effect or even distortion. After special tuning by Monport, even when carving at the edges, there will be no weak light.
  • Deep Engraving and Cutting Capabilities: With this 60W fiber laser marking machine, you can perform 2.5D metal engraving, deep metal engraving, and even some metal sheet cutting (usually the higher the power, the stronger the deep engraving and cutting ability, and the higher the efficiency. If you want stronger and faster results, Monport recommends purchasing a 60W or above machine)
  • Lightburn Compatible: All Monport fiber marking machines can be operated using Lightburn, but if you don't want to use Lightburn, we also provide free and easy-to-use software (Free software and backup parameters are saved on a USB drive and included in the packaging).
Material 3 kW maximum 6 kW maximum

Stainless steel 10 mm 20 mm
Aluminum 10 mm 20 mm
Brass 12 mm 17 mm
Copper 2 mm 6 mm

Fujikura explicitly cautions: “These processing data do not guarantee processing.” These are equipment-specific reference values, not a promise of production speed, edge quality, reliable piercing or suitability for a particular part. Fujikura notes that results can also depend on laser conditions and peripheral optical systems and equipment. Use the figures to frame questions, then validate the intended material and thickness with application-specific test cuts. Fujikura product information

What is changing in factory equipment

Fiber laser cutting is no longer limited to one kind of workpiece or machine layout. Current industrial offerings include systems for flat sheet, tube, combined sheet-and-tube processing and three-dimensional cutting. Some configurations integrate loading and unloading, linking cutting capacity with material handling. Cutlite Penta product configurations

Power ratings are rising for applications such as thick-sheet cutting. Coherent announced its 30 kW EDGE FL30 on September 4, 2025, describing it as engineered for thick-sheet cutting. That is a manufacturer product announcement, not an independent production test, and it does not mean every fabricator needs a high-power source. Coherent’s EDGE FL30 announcement

Where the manufacturing value comes from

A laser source is only one part of a production system. The practical benefit depends on whether the machine can repeatedly make the required parts, at the required quality and rate, within the shop’s workflow. A system with more power may help with certain thicknesses or job mixes, but it does not by itself establish faster throughput, lower costs or a better finished part.

  • Material mix: Identify the metals and alloys actually processed, including reflective materials relevant to the shop.
  • Part requirements: Check edge quality, piercing stability, repeatability and any post-processing needed on representative parts.
  • Production mix: Measure throughput on representative jobs and nests, rather than relying only on a supplier’s best-case thin-sheet speed.
  • Handling and layout: Match sheet, tube, combined or 3D capability to the work, and determine whether loading, unloading, storage or other automation is needed.

How to evaluate a system for your shop

  1. Define the real work. List the materials, alloy grades, thickness range, geometries, quality requirements and job volumes the machine must handle.
  2. Request application testing. Ask suppliers to cut representative parts and document results such as edge condition, piercing behavior, repeatability, processing time and downstream finishing needs.
  3. Compare complete configurations. Include the laser, optics, machine format, controls, software, extraction and material-handling equipment—not just the source’s rated power.
  4. Estimate operating and ownership needs. Account for power, assist gas, consumables, extraction, maintenance, training and service response. The cited sources do not establish a neutral, like-for-like total-cost comparison or a universal payback period, so request application-specific quotations and validate costs for your facility.
  5. Confirm local support. Check service availability, operator support, controls and software fit, along with expected response arrangements.
  6. Review safety before installation. Confirm enclosure and interlocks, ventilation, maintenance procedures, installation requirements and applicable regulations with qualified safety personnel.

Safety, fumes and applicable standards

Laser cutting involves more than controlling the beam. Laser radiation, machine access, process fumes and vapors all require attention. ISO 11553-1:2020 covers laser-radiation hazards from laser-processing machines, related safety requirements and information manufacturers provide. ISO reports that the 2020 edition was reviewed and confirmed as current in 2025. ISO 11553-1:2020

OSHA’s laser-hazards standards page points to ANSI B11.21 for machine tools using lasers, IEC 60825-1 for laser-product classification and requirements, and ISO 11553-1. OSHA’s Technical Manual says ventilation should be installed to reduce potentially hazardous fumes and vapors from laser cutting and related processes to appropriate exposure limits.
