Windscribe is a credible VPN choice for privacy-conscious users who want transparent policies and a usable free tier, but “built on trust” should not be mistaken for “stores nothing” or a blanket security guarantee. Its published policy describes limited account and operational data retention, while its audit record spans different products and years. The free plan’s monthly data cap and inconsistent streaming results are practical drawbacks.
Is Windscribe VPN trustworthy?
Windscribe provides concrete evidence readers can assess: a published privacy policy, open-source clients, and disclosed third-party audits. Those are useful transparency measures, but they do not prove that every app version, server, or future configuration is risk-free. The policy also describes some retained account and operational data, so Windscribe is better understood as a provider with stated limits on collection than as a service that keeps no data at all.
Windscribe’s co-founder Yegor Sak has also described a legal episode involving a Finnish Windscribe server IP connected to an alleged breach in Greece. In his April 24, 2025 account, Sak wrote: “On April 11th 2025, I finally got my day in court, and was found not guilty, or rather the case was dismissed.” This is a relevant, dated account from the company’s co-founder, not a court certification of all Windscribe privacy claims. Does Windscribe keep logs?
Windscribe’s privacy policy, which says it was last updated July 30, 2024, distinguishes between activity it says it does not record and limited data it retains.

- It says it does not store: historical VPN sessions, source IP addresses, or the websites users visit.
- It says it retains: the total bytes transferred in a 30-day period and the timestamp of the user’s last activity. Windscribe says it uses these to enforce free-tier limits, prevent abuse, and identify inactive accounts.
- While a connection is active: certain details remain in server memory, including the OpenVPN/IKEv2 username, connection time, and transferred data. The policy says they are discarded when the user disconnects. It also describes central counters for concurrent connections and transferred bytes.
The policy’s own summary is: “Anything that is not mentioned above is not stored.” That statement should be read alongside the specific data it does mention; it does not mean Windscribe retains zero data.
What do Windscribe’s audits actually cover?
The company’s audit disclosure lists assessments of different components at different times. An audit of one part of the service is not a standing certification of every component or later release.

The dates matter: the app audits are older than the FreshScribe assessment, and none should be presented as an assurance about every current release.
Is Windscribe Free safe, and what are its limits?
The free plan uses a shared pool of free servers. Windscribe’s free-plan page lists 10 GB of data per month with a verified email address, or 2 GB per month without one, access in 10 countries, and unlimited simultaneous devices.

Unlimited devices do not mean unlimited use: the data allowance is shared across a user’s activity, so frequent streaming, gaming, or downloads can consume it quickly. The plan may suit occasional use or trying the service, but the cap is a significant constraint for regular video streaming.
Does Windscribe work for streaming?
Sometimes, but access varies. In a review dated November 26, 2025, Tom’s Guide said it tested Windscribe’s free service on Windows, Mac, Android, and iOS and found mixed streaming results. Streaming platforms can detect and block VPN endpoints, so no particular catalog or service should be treated as reliably accessible. The free data limit is an additional constraint even when a stream works.

How fast is Windscribe?
There is no single speed figure that predicts what every subscriber will get: results depend on location, protocol, server, network, and testing setup. TechRadar reported results of 2,263 Mbps using WireGuard and 770 Mbps using OpenVPN in its 2026 test setup, which included a 10 GB line and a cloud PC. Those are that publisher’s test results, not typical or guaranteed subscriber speeds; TechRadar cautions that users may see different performance. Read TechRadar’s Windscribe review.

Can you use Windscribe on a router?
Windscribe lists routers among its supported device categories, and Tom’s Guide says router use requires a paid account. A VPN-compatible router can cover devices that cannot run a native VPN app, but compatibility depends on the router and its firmware. The sources cited here do not establish support for a specific model, so check Windscribe’s setup guidance and the router manufacturer’s documentation before buying or configuring one.
