A bank statement or identity document is exactly the kind of file that can make someone pause before using an online PDF tool. “But what happens to that file on the server?” was the concern behind PDF Pro, whose creator says the tool was built to process PDFs in the browser using WebAssembly. That is the creator’s architectural goal, not a guarantee independently established here: PDF Pro’s current pages make conflicting claims about whether files are uploaded.
The problem that prompted PDF Pro
In an essay on DEV Community, PDF Pro’s creator describes building the tool after worrying about uploading sensitive documents—such as bank statements and identity papers—to online PDF services. The idea was to make common PDF tasks available in a browser while keeping the document processing on the user’s device.
The creator’s essay puts the promise simply: “Your file literally never leaves your computer.” That is a statement of the intended design by the creator; it should not be treated as independently verified proof of every file’s network behavior.

What WebAssembly contributes
The creator says a C++ PDF-processing library was compiled to run through JavaScript and WebAssembly in the browser. WebAssembly lets compiled code run in a browser environment. In the design described, the important choice is where the processing happens: on the user’s device rather than on a remote server.

The essay does not name the C++ library or provide an independent security audit. It also does not establish a browser-support matrix, offline operation, or whether every feature in the product follows the same processing path. Those details should not be inferred from the use of WebAssembly alone.
Benefits the creator says local processing offers
- Less need to send a document to a server: The creator says browser-side processing avoids uploading the PDF. Whether that holds for a particular feature should be verified rather than assumed.
- Potentially less waiting on network transfer: The creator argues that processing locally avoids upload latency. No independent timing test is provided, so this is a design rationale, not a measured speed comparison.
- No server compute cost for that work: The creator says local processing helps make a free tool without daily caps viable. The essay does not provide service-cost data or establish the product’s current terms.
Why the “zero uploads” claim needs checking
PDF Pro’s current homepage advertises local WebAssembly processing and says files never leave the device, including the phrase “0 Bytes Ever Uploaded.” It also lists a broad utility suite and AI document features. These are current vendor statements.

The current compression page is inconsistent: it describes processing in the browser and says files are never uploaded, but elsewhere refers to uploading a PDF, server-side processing, cloud-based tools, and automatic deletion from cloud storage after two hours. Those statements do not establish a single, clear handling path. A deletion policy, even if applicable, is different from a claim that no upload occurs.

Look for feature-specific explanations, current privacy and retention terms, and technical evidence that supports local processing. If the answer matters, test with a non-sensitive file and observe the browser’s network activity or choose a workflow you can verify.

Portal file-size targets are not official requirements
The creator’s essay frames PDF Pro around Indian government portal constraints and mentions a 200 KB target and 150 DPI. The current compression page gives different vendor-described examples, including 100 KB for SSC use cases, UPSC ranges, and reductions to 144 or 72 DPI. These figures conflict and the sources do not establish current official SSC or UPSC limits.
Check the relevant portal’s own instructions before compressing a document. A file-size target is not enough on its own: reducing image resolution can make a scan smaller while also making text or identification details harder to read. PDF Pro’s compression copy describes retaining text and vector elements while compressing images, so “lossless” should not be read as a promise that image quality is unchanged.

For PDF compression services or online PDF editor alternatives, brand names and privacy slogans are less useful than answers to specific handling questions. Compare the workflow you actually need:

- File handling: Does the relevant feature process locally, transmit document contents, or use a server? Is the answer specific and consistent across the product’s pages?
- Evidence: Is the claim supported by inspectable technical details, or only by marketing copy?
- Quality controls: Can you choose a target size or resolution, and does the tool downsample images? Inspect the output before submitting it.
- Scope and terms: Confirm the needed operation, account requirements, file limits, pricing, and retention policy at the time you use the service.
The creator’s essay names iLovePDF and Smallpdf as examples of services in the upload-based workflow context; that mention alone does not verify either service’s current handling practices. Apply the same checks to any provider rather than assuming a data policy from its name or category.
