Turn off the model-training or model-improvement setting separately in every AI service you use. The controls below apply to the consumer products identified; they do not automatically cover business accounts, third-party integrations, or every product from the same company. Opting out generally affects future use for training—not saved chat history, all human review, or the processing needed to run and protect the service.
Provider settings change, so these menu paths reflect official guidance checked on October 7, 2026. Check that you are signed into the right account and using the product version described before changing a setting.
Find the training control for each service
Use the row for the product you actually use. The paths below are for consumer experiences unless the row says otherwise.

What each opt-out does—and does not—change
ChatGPT and Codex
OpenAI says either the ChatGPT setting or its Privacy Portal request is sufficient for ChatGPT conversations and Codex tasks. Turning off Improve the model for everyone applies to new conversations and tasks; it does not delete or hide saved chats. If you submit thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback, OpenAI says the related conversation may be used for training even after opting out.

Codex has a separate Include environments setting governing whether additional environment context may be used for training. The ordinary ChatGPT control does not change that setting. For ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu, and API use, OpenAI says inputs and outputs are not used to improve models by default. API organization owners can enable data sharing under OpenAI’s separate controls, so do not assume the personal-account path governs a managed workspace.
Temporary Chat is a separate choice: it does not appear in chat history and is not used to improve models while temporary, but OpenAI says it may be retained for up to 30 days for safety purposes.

Claude
Anthropic’s consumer setting applies to new chats and coding sessions after it is turned off. It does not pull back data already included in training that has started or in models already trained. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude even if Model Improvement is on.

Gemini Apps
For users aged 18 or older, Google says Keep Activity is on by default. When it is off, future chats do not appear in Gemini Apps Activity and are not used to train Google AI models unless you send feedback. Google may keep chats associated with the account for up to 72 hours to provide the service, process feedback, and protect Google, users, and the public.
Some chats may be reviewed by trained human reviewers. Google says reviewed chats and related data may be retained for up to three years and are not removed by deleting activity. Temporary chats also have stated short-term retention. Google documents separate controls for audio and Gemini Live video or screen sharing, so the text-chat setting should not be treated as covering every recording type.

Microsoft Copilot
The paths in the table are for Microsoft’s updated Copilot app, which Microsoft says became available on the web, desktop, and mobile on August 18, 2026. Its older guidance applies only to the older app. Turn off both training controls if you want to cover text and voice conversation activity. Microsoft says the opt-out excludes future conversation activity from training these AI models, but not from other general product or system improvements, advertising, digital safety, security, or compliance uses. Training and personalization are separate: personalization may remain on when training is off.

Grok
SpaceXAI says the standalone setting excludes new conversations from model training. Private Chat is another no-training option where available; SpaceXAI’s FAQ says those conversations are deleted from its systems within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions. Voluntary feedback may still be used for training.
Grok accessed through X may be governed by X’s separate controls and terms. The standalone Grok path does not establish what happens to X interactions.

“Not used for training” is a narrower promise than “not stored” or “never seen by a person.” Providers may retain data for service operation, safety, security, feedback, or legal compliance under their policies. Deleting activity or a chat is also a different action from opting out; it may not remove data already reviewed or otherwise retained under a provider’s stated exceptions.
- Training: whether future prompts or other content can be used to improve models.
- History and retention: whether chats appear in your account and how long a provider may keep them.
- Personalization or memory: whether the service uses information to tailor responses; this can be separate from model training.
- Feedback and review: whether ratings, safety flags, or human review receive different treatment.
- Other content types: voice, video, files, environment context, and connected services may have distinct controls.
These are not interchangeable settings. For example, ChatGPT history can remain after training is switched off, and Microsoft personalization can remain enabled while training is off.
A practical privacy check
- List the products and account types you use. Include separate apps and services even when they share a company name; a consumer setting may not apply to a workspace, API, or product embedded elsewhere.
- Open each signed-in account’s privacy or data controls. Look for labels such as “training,” “model improvement,” “Improve the model,” or “Keep Activity,” and use the product-specific paths above.
- Check related controls separately. Consider feedback, voice or video, Codex environment context, history, personalization, and temporary or incognito modes where relevant.
- Read the exceptions on the provider’s own settings page. Confirm what applies to future data, how feedback is handled, and what may be retained for service, safety, or compliance.
- Avoid entering information that requires confidentiality. An opt-out is not a guarantee that no employee or service provider can ever review content, and it cannot undo training that has already occurred.

The provider instructions here cover OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Codex, Anthropic’s consumer Claude products, Google Gemini Apps, Microsoft Copilot personal accounts, standalone SpaceXAI Grok, and a limited Alexa example. They do not establish current controls for Meta AI, every regional rule, enterprise configuration, or third-party integration.
