To reduce interruptions from Windows 11 update restarts, set active hours: go to Start > Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours, then choose automatic adjustment or set your usual start and end times manually. This does not disable updates or permanently prevent a required restart; it helps Windows schedule automatic restarts outside the hours you use your PC.
Set active hours to avoid restarts while you use your PC
Microsoft describes active hours as a way to help prevent inconvenient restarts. Windows uses the selected window when scheduling an automatic restart after an update. Choose hours that cover your normal computer use, not just your workday if you also use the PC in the evening.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update > Advanced options.
- Select Active hours.
- Under Adjust active hours, choose Automatically to let Windows base the hours on device activity, or choose Manually and set the start and end times.
Microsoft’s active-hours guidance says the setting helps prevent inconvenient restarts. It is a scheduling window, not a way to stop Windows from installing updates. A restart may still happen outside the window.

Pause updates only when you need a short delay
If Windows offers the pause control on your device, you can use it to postpone updates briefly. Microsoft’s Group Policy guidance describes a 7-day pause for feature and quality updates for users with access to pause settings. This is temporary, not a replacement for active hours: resume updates in Windows Update or allow the pause period to expire so the PC can receive updates.

What to do if restart settings are managed by work or school
On an organization-managed PC, Group Policy or mobile device management (MDM) may control update installation and restart behavior. Some settings may be unavailable or marked as managed. Contact your organization’s IT administrator rather than trying to bypass its controls.
Microsoft documents administrator policies for restart behavior, including Turn off auto-restart for updates during active hours. Another policy, No auto-restart with logged on users, has specific configuration requirements and caveats; it is not a general consumer switch. Microsoft also says direct registry editing is not recommended and may conflict with Group Policy or MDM.

Why a restart may still happen
- Active hours do not block every restart. They guide when Windows attempts an automatic restart after an update; they are not an indefinite restart ban.
- Notifications are not restart controls. Changing notification-display settings can affect alerts, but Microsoft says those settings do not control when updates download and install.
- Managed-device deadlines can take precedence. An organization’s compliance deadline policy may ultimately schedule a restart even during active hours. For Windows 11 version 23H2 and later, Microsoft describes restart or scheduling choices before the effective deadline; after it, a pending restart can be forced. Timing and notifications depend on the Windows version and the policy configured by the organization.
- Available options can vary. Windows version, edition, and whether an organization manages the device can affect which controls appear.
