Apple TV can run a VPN in two ways. The first is a provider’s own app, installed from the Apple TV App Store on a model running a supported tvOS version. The provider pages reviewed for this update, checked in early October 2026, set tvOS 17 or later as the minimum for their native Apple TV apps. The second is a fallback for older or unsupported setups: a VPN configured on your router, or a DNS-based streaming service. Your tvOS version and device model decide which of the five providers below you can install directly, so check that first.
Check your tvOS version before choosing a provider
Every provider in this shortlist that documents a native Apple TV app names tvOS 17 or later as the requirement. If your Apple TV runs an earlier version, the native app route is closed, and you will need a router or DNS-based option instead.
- On the Apple TV, open Settings, then select General.
- Select About and read the Software Version line.
- If the version is below 17, select Software Update from the General menu and install any available update. If no update is offered, your model cannot run tvOS 17, so use one of the fallback routes described later.
NordVPN’s Apple TV page lists the Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K device families. It does not state a minimum tvOS version, so check the model and version together before subscribing.

ExpressVPN
ExpressVPN’s Apple TV instructions specify tvOS 17 or later for the native app. Its support material also covers older devices through MediaStreamer, which is a DNS service, and through a router running ExpressVPN. The setup page includes an in-app speed test. That tool measures your connection through the provider’s own app, so treat it as a feature to try, not as evidence of how the service compares with others.
Private Internet Access (PIA)
PIA documents a dedicated app for compatible Apple TV devices on tvOS 17 or later. Its guide walks through signing in, granting VPN configuration permission and selecting a location. It also says the Apple TV app uses IKEv2, a tunnelling protocol. PIA’s guide additionally documents Smart DNS and router-based virtual router setups for devices that cannot run the app.
Proton VPN
Proton VPN provides an Apple TV app for tvOS 17 or later. Installation starts in the App Store and continues with on-screen sign-in. Proton states that the Apple TV app is available only with a paid subscription, so a free account will not give you the native app route.

Surfshark
Surfshark’s support page says its Apple TV app requires tvOS 17 or later and an active subscription. The same page states that its SmartDNS feature has been discontinued. Do not plan a setup around Smart DNS with Surfshark unless its current support pages say otherwise when you check.
NordVPN
NordVPN’s product page describes installation from the App Store and selecting a location, and it lists the Apple TV HD and Apple TV 4K device families. The page is published in Spanish, so confirm the procedure on the English version of NordVPN’s official site before following it step by step.
Install a provider app on Apple TV
Once your Apple TV meets the provider’s tvOS requirement, the general flow is the same across providers. Screens and labels differ, so follow the provider’s own guide for exact wording.
Rank #3
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
- Open the App Store on the Apple TV, search for the provider’s name, and install its Apple TV app.
- Open the app and sign in with your provider account. If you use a provider that requires a paid plan for the Apple TV app, such as Proton VPN, activate the subscription first.
- When tvOS prompts for permission to add a VPN configuration, approve it. Without this step, the app cannot route traffic.
- Choose a server location from the app’s list.
- Connect. Confirm in the app that the connection is active before you open a streaming service.
If the app asks for a location but the list is empty, or the connection fails after the permission step, sign out, reopen the app and reconnect. If it still fails, check the provider’s Apple TV troubleshooting page, since the fix depends on the provider.

Apple’s privacy disclosure says a VPN routes certain traffic, and it warns about who can see that traffic. In its VPNs and Privacy disclosure, Apple states: “When a VPN configuration is installed and active, your VPN provider may be able to see, intercept, and modify your online activity.” Apple also notes that essential system traffic can remain outside the VPN. The practical consequence is that the provider you choose becomes a party you must trust with your traffic. Apple’s security guide to VPN deployment describes how VPN support works across Apple platforms, which is useful background if you manage the Apple TV on a network you do not control.
If your Apple TV cannot run a provider app
Two fallback routes are documented by providers. They solve different problems, and they do not give the same protection.

Router-level VPN
A VPN installed on the router encrypts traffic from every device on that network, including the Apple TV. This route does not depend on the tvOS version of the Apple TV, because the Apple TV never runs the VPN software itself. ExpressVPN and PIA both document router setups. The trade-off is that every device on the network shares the same VPN location, and changing the location means changing the router’s configuration or connection.
Smart DNS and MediaStreamer
A DNS-based streaming service changes how the Apple TV resolves certain addresses. It is not an encrypted tunnel. ExpressVPN states that its MediaStreamer service is designed for streaming and does not provide the privacy and security benefits of a VPN. Use it only when the goal is access to a service, not protection of your traffic. Smart DNS behaviour and compatibility differ between providers, so do not assume that a service’s Smart DNS works like the one described for another provider.
Choosing a route
- Your Apple TV runs tvOS 17 or later and you want encrypted traffic: install the native app from one of the five providers above, on a plan that meets its requirements.
- Your Apple TV runs an earlier version, but your router supports VPN software: set the VPN up on the router, and accept that every device on the network shares it.
- Your Apple TV cannot run a VPN app and you need only service access, not encryption: consider a Smart DNS service, and confirm that the provider still offers it before you pay.
What this shortlist does not establish
None of the sources behind this shortlist include controlled speed or streaming tests. Provider claims about speed, server totals and streaming access are marketing statements, and they do not show which service is fastest or most reliable on an Apple TV. A larger server count does not guarantee faster streaming. Streaming access also varies by server, streaming service, account and time, so no provider here can be promised to unlock a particular library or app.
