No single SD card capacity limit applies to all laptops. The SD Association’s standards set ceilings of 2GB for SD, 32GB for SDHC, 2TB for SDXC and 128TB for SDUC. Those figures describe what the card formats can hold, not what your laptop can read. Your laptop’s built-in card reader has to support the card’s standard, and that is set by the exact model, so the manufacturer’s specifications are the only reliable answer for your machine.

The four SD capacity bands

Capacity is set by the card family, not by the brand or the price. Each family has a fixed capacity band and a fixed file system. The table below lists the bands from the SD Association’s capacity standards guidance (undated), along with which reader standards accept each card.

Card family Capacity band File system Host readers that accept it
SD Up to 2GB FAT12/16 SD, SDHC, SDXC, SDUC readers
SDHC Over 2GB through 32GB FAT32 SDHC, SDXC, SDUC readers
SDXC Over 32GB through 2TB exFAT SDXC, SDUC readers
SDUC Over 2TB through 128TB exFAT SDUC readers only

Read the last column as the real compatibility test. A card can be inside its own capacity band and still fail to work in a reader built for an older standard. The reader’s standard, not the card’s size, decides the outcome. Speed class is a separate matter: it describes sustained transfer performance and does not change whether a card is recognised or what capacity the reader can use.

Why the reader decides, not the card

The question “what size SD card does my laptop support?” really asks which SD standard the laptop’s reader implements. An SDXC card in an SDXC or SDUC reader is a standards-level match. An SDXC card in an SDHC-only reader is not, because SDHC readers are specified for SD and SDHC cards. The SD Association’s consumer guidance makes the same point: “Before inserting your SD memory card, confirm the device is compatible to the SD standard.”

  • CAPTURE LARGER THAN LIFE. Unlock 4K UHD(3) brilliance and pristine high res stills with video speed class ratings of U3 and V30(4).
  • SPEED BARRIERS SHATTERED. Save precious moments with blazing read speeds up to 250MB/s(2) and write speeds up to 170MB/s(2) [256GB-1TB capacities(1)].
  • MAXIMIZE WITH MASSIVE CAPACITY. Capture for longer and store more with up to 2TB(1) of storage that can hold up to 2,808 minutes of 4K UHD video recorded at 30 fps (641MB/minute)(9).
  • DEFY THE ELEMENTS. Unrelentingly resilient, Sandisk SD memory cards are engineered to perform in extreme conditions, despite rough handling and constant use.(6)
  • CONTENT MANAGEMENT, SIMPLIFIED. Back up, organize, and transfer everything easily with the Sandisk Memory Zone desktop app,(7) whether you use an SD card slot or a card reader.

The file system matters for the same reason. SDXC and SDUC cards use exFAT, while SDHC cards use FAT32. A reader that cannot handle the file system a card is formatted with may not mount it, even if the standard looks correct on paper.

How to check your specific laptop

  1. Find the laptop’s full model number. It is usually printed on the underside label or shown in the system information screen.
  2. Open the manufacturer’s manual or product specifications for that model, and search for “memory card” or “card reader.”
  3. Note which SD standard the reader supports (SD, SDHC, SDXC or SDUC) and any capacity limit the manufacturer states.
  4. Match your card family to that standard. An SDXC card needs an SDXC or SDUC reader. An SDHC card needs an SDHC, SDXC or SDUC reader.
  5. If the laptop has no card slot, or the slot is an older standard, use an external reader that explicitly lists support for your card family (see the next section).

If the specifications do not mention the card reader at all, the manufacturer has not published a standard for that model. In that case, treat the reader’s standard as unconfirmed and test with a card you can afford to lose before storing important files on it.

Common capacity questions

Will a 1TB SD card work in my laptop?

A 1TB card is an SDXC card, because it falls inside the 32GB to 2TB SDXC band. It will work only if your laptop’s reader supports SDXC or SDUC. Even then, the manufacturer’s stated maximum is the figure to trust. The 2TB number is the SDXC standard ceiling, not a guarantee that every laptop reads cards up to that size.

Can I use an SDXC card in an SDHC reader?

Under the SD Association’s compatibility guidance, no. SDHC readers are specified for SD and SDHC cards only. Some readers will physically accept an SDXC card and then fail to recognise it or show the wrong capacity. Formatting the card does not change this, and it is not a way to upgrade an older reader. Use an SDXC or SDUC reader instead, either built-in or external.

What about 128TB SDUC cards?

SDUC is the top of the standard, with a band of over 2TB through 128TB. The SD Association states that SDUC requires host-controller support. Most laptops should not be assumed to support it unless the model’s documentation says so. Treat any SDUC card as something to confirm against the reader specification before you rely on it.

When an external reader is the answer

The SD Association notes that a USB reader/writer or computer card adapter can be used when a computer has no card slot or only an earlier-standard reader. Before you buy one, check the following:

  • The reader connects to a port your laptop actually has, such as USB-A or USB-C.

Do not assume an external reader supports SDXC just because it is sold as an SD card reader. Only the specification confirms it.

Troubleshooting a card that is not recognised

If the card does not appear, or appears with a smaller capacity than expected, work through these checks in order:

SANDISK 256GB Extreme PRO SD Memory Card, Up to 200MB/s Read Speeds, UHS-I
  • Save time with card offload speeds of up to 200MB/s powered by SanDisk QuickFlow Technology (Up to 200MB/s read speeds, engineered with proprietary technology to reach speeds beyond UHS-I 104MB/s, require compatible devices capable of reaching such speeds. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending upon host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes. X = 150KB/sec. SanDisk QuickFlow Technology is only available for 64GB, 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB capacities. 1GB=1,000,000,000 bytes. 1TB=1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Actual user storage less.)
  • Pair with the SanDisk Professional PRO-READER SD and microSD to achieve maximum speeds (sold separately)
  • Shot speeds up to 140MB/s (Write speed up to 140MB/s. Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending upon host device, interface, usage conditions and other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes. X = 150KB/sec.)
  • Perfect for shooting 4K UHD video and sequential burst mode photography (Full HD (1920x1080) and 4K UHD (3840 x 2160) video support may vary based upon host device, file attributes and other factors. See HD page on SanDisk site.)
  • UHS Speed Class 3 (U3) and Video Speed Class 30 (V30) (UHS Speed Class 3 designates a performance option designed to support 4K UHD video recording with enabled UHS host devices. UHS Video Speed Class 30 (V30), sustained video capture rate of 30MB/s, designates a performance option designed to support real-time video recording with UHS enabled host devices. See the SD Association’s official website.)
  • Confirm the card family. Look for the SD, SDHC, SDXC or SDUC marking and check its capacity against the bands above.
  • Confirm the reader standard. Compare it with the manufacturer’s specifications for your exact model.
  • Try an external reader that explicitly lists support for the card family. If the card works there, the built-in reader is the limit.
  • Check the file system. Cards formatted as exFAT are not readable by readers that only handle FAT32, which can happen with older hardware.
  • Do not reformat to force recognition. Formatting changes the file system and erases the card. It does not change what standard the reader supports.

Keep card capacity and speed class in separate checks. A card can be a high-speed model and still be unreadable if the reader’s standard does not match its capacity band.
