A real Android build-and-test loop on an ARM64 phone is possible in principle, but ARM64 alone does not guarantee that every Android SDK tool, Java build component, or Gradle plugin will run on the device. Termux runs programs natively on Android, using Android’s bionic C library and Termux-specific package paths. A toolchain built for a standard Linux glibc system assumes a different runtime, so it may fail or behave differently. A working setup matches each tool to the environment that actually executes it, and it checks every build step on the phone rather than assuming the desktop instructions carry over.

This guide separates what official Android and Termux documentation establish from what the ADT project claims for its own ARM64 tools. The ADT claim is a project-reported setup that has not been independently reproduced here.

Why ARM64 is not the same as compatibility

Termux documents that it runs programs natively in Android’s environment and that its packages are built against Android bionic and Termux-specific paths. Those two facts explain most of the friction in this workflow. A binary built for Linux glibc expects a different C library and filesystem layout, so an ARM64 binary can still fail to start on a phone if its runtime assumptions do not match.

Termux also offers an optional PRoot-based arrangement, which gives a Linux-style userland inside the Termux app. That is a separate environment with its own binaries and paths, not an extension of the native Termux packages. Treat the two as different toolchains, and record which one each command runs in.

The stages of the loop and the tools behind them

Android’s official SDK documentation gives you the vocabulary for each build stage. The table below maps each stage to its tool and the check you should run on the phone before trusting that stage.

Stage Tool and role (per Android developer documentation) What to verify on the phone
Resource processing AAPT2, the resource compiler and packager The AAPT2 binary your build calls launches in the environment running the build
Alignment zipalign, the APK alignment tool The aligned output is produced and passes to the next step
Signing and verification apksigner, which signs APKs and checks signatures The signing key exists, and the signed APK verifies
Install and inspect ADB, which manages devices, installs APKs, runs shell commands, and transfers files adb devices lists the phone as ready, not unauthorized or offline
Validation Running the app on a physical device The app launches, the target feature works, and logs show no unexpected errors

The exact Gradle integration and the choice of compatible executables are project-specific. Use the instructions from the project you are following rather than assuming a generic Android SDK install will work.

Termux constraints to check before you start

  • Android version: Termux’s README states that full app and package support requires Android 7 or later.
  • Single install source: the README warns against mixing Termux APKs signed by different distribution sources. Install every Termux component from one source, and check the current installation instructions in the project README before you begin.
  • On-device package builds have limits: Termux’s build system can run inside the app, but some packages cannot be built on-device because required host build tools are unavailable. Plan for native-code build failures, and do not assume every Gradle project, plugin, or SDK component will build unchanged.
  • Java and Gradle versions: confirm that the Java runtime and Gradle version your project requires exist in the environment you chose. Search for package names with pkg search in Termux rather than guessing them.

What the ADT claim does and does not establish

ADT appears in search results as a project providing ARM64 tools for Linux glibc. The project reports validation on a Redmi Turbo 4 Pro using Termux with a PRoot Debian environment. That is a single-device claim, reported by the project itself. It does not show that the same tools work on other ARM64 phones, other Android versions, or other Termux releases.

The project’s own page could not be opened while this guide was prepared, so its tool list, required versions, and build steps are not confirmed here. Read the project’s current instructions before following any ADT recipe, and record the versions you actually use.

Connecting the phone for deployment

Android’s device guide covers USB debugging and wireless debugging. Its examples assume a workstation connecting to the phone. If you run the ADB client on the phone itself, the setup is not documented as a standard path, so verify it on your own device.

  1. Enable Developer options. Open Settings, go to About phone, and tap Build number seven times. The menu names vary by manufacturer.
  2. Enable debugging. In Developer options, turn on USB debugging. For a wireless connection, turn on Wireless debugging.
  3. Pair the device. In Developer options, open Wireless debugging and choose Pair device with pairing code. Run adb pair <ip>:<pairing-port> and enter the code shown on the phone.
  4. Connect. Run adb connect <ip>:<port> using the connection port shown under Wireless debugging.
  5. Confirm the connection. Run adb devices. A ready device appears with the word device. If it shows unauthorized, accept the debugging prompt on the phone. If it shows offline, disconnect and reconnect.

Confirm that the adb binary runs in the same environment as your build, and that the phone’s wireless debugging endpoint is reachable from that environment.

Validating the result on the real phone

Android Developers’ guide to running apps on a hardware device states: “Always test your Android app on a real device before releasing it to users.” The page does not name an individual author.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Build and sign. Build the debug APK, sign it with apksigner, and verify the signature. Save the exact commands.
  2. Install. Run adb install -r app-debug.apk. The -r flag replaces an existing install with the same package.
  3. Launch. Start the main activity with adb shell am start -n com.example.app/.MainActivity, replacing the package and activity names with your own.
  4. Exercise the feature. Use the feature the project is meant to deliver, not just the launch screen.
  5. Read the logs. Run adb logcat *:E to show error-level messages while you test.

Record the phone model, Android version, Termux version, environment (native or PRoot), tool versions, the commands you ran, and the outcome. Without those details, a reported success cannot be reproduced by someone else.

Troubleshooting common failures

  • A tool fails to start with a loader or library error: this often means a binary built for a different C library is being run in the environment. Check whether the tool has a build for Termux’s native environment, or run it from the environment it was built for.
  • A package fails to build on the phone: check whether Termux provides the missing host tool. If it does not, use a prebuilt executable or move that step to a workstation.
  • ADB shows unauthorized or offline: accept the prompt on the phone, or disconnect and pair again.
  • Install fails on a signature conflict: a previous build signed with a different key is still installed. Remove it with adb uninstall <package-name>, then install again.
