WP Fastest Cache connects to Cloudflare through a Cloudflare API token. Its integration does two things: it changes some Cloudflare settings to reduce conflicts between the two caches, and it asks Cloudflare to purge its cache whenever WP Fastest Cache clears its own. The plugin’s Cloudflare guide, dated October 2, 2026, does not identify Cloudflare APO as a prerequisite for this basic integration.
How the two caches fit together
A WordPress site using WP Fastest Cache with Cloudflare runs two separate caches. WP Fastest Cache stores generated pages on your origin server. Cloudflare keeps copies of files at its edge data centers. Clearing one does not clear the other unless the purge request has actually run, so a page can be fresh on your server and stale at the edge, or the reverse.
A successful purge is not proof that a page has been refreshed. Cloudflare’s cache purge documentation (last updated September 29, 2026) states: “A successful purge request returns HTTP 200. This indicates that Cloudflare received the request — it does not confirm that Cloudflare cached the targeted content or evicted any content.” The reliable check is the response itself. Request the page and read the CF-Cache-Status header. After a successful purge of a cached resource, the header should no longer read HIT on the next request.
Setup
- Open the Cloudflare integration section in WP Fastest Cache’s settings and follow the current guide on its site. Menu labels can change between versions, so match the guide to your installed release.
- In the Cloudflare dashboard, create an API token using the WordPress template. Check the permissions the template grants in the dashboard at the time you create it, and keep the token limited to what the plugin needs.
- Paste the token into the WP Fastest Cache integration and complete the connection.
- Run a test before you rely on the setup. Load a page once and note its
CF-Cache-Statusvalue. Edit a visible sentence on that page, clear WP Fastest Cache, then request the page again, for example withcurl -I https://yourdomain.example/your-page/. Confirm the new text appears and the header shows the page was refetched.
When visitors still see old content
- Clear the local cache first. Clear WP Fastest Cache, allow the integration to send its Cloudflare purge, then reload the page in a private browsing window so your own browser cache does not interfere.
- Purge the URL at Cloudflare. If the page is still stale, use Cloudflare’s cache tools to purge that specific URL. Cloudflare recommends single-file URL purging for many cases, which avoids clearing more of the zone than necessary.
- Verify with the header. Repeat the request and check
CF-Cache-Status. A fresh response with new content confirms the fix. AHITthat still shows old content means the edge copy has not been evicted, so repeat the URL purge and retest.
An older browser-cache recommendation
A June 25, 2019 WP Fastest Cache guide says that when Cloudflare is used, browser caching should be enabled at Cloudflare. That advice predates the current integration, and the interface it describes may have changed. Confirm the setting’s current location in the Cloudflare dashboard before following it.

The router includes defenses against common bypass attempts, letting families create rules that match each user. Best of all, it's subscription free!
Cloudflare APO is a separate service
Automatic Platform Optimization (APO) is an optional Cloudflare service for WordPress edge caching. It is separate from the WP Fastest Cache integration. Cloudflare’s APO activation guidance (last updated May 5, 2026) says Free plan users must purchase APO before they can use it. Cloudflare also warns that combining APO with other caching plugins can cause unexpected results and recommends testing compatibility.
Whether WP Fastest Cache works with APO
Readers often ask whether WP Fastest Cache is compatible with Cloudflare APO. The plugin’s Cloudflare guide does not answer that question directly, and an older support-forum discussion does not settle it for current versions. Treat the combination as something to test on your own site rather than assume it works.

Activation order for APO
- Temporarily turn off other caching plugins during the initial APO setup.
- Activate APO, then clear the server cache.
- Re-enable your other caching plugins one at a time and check for unexpected behavior after each change, since Cloudflare recommends testing whether re-enabling them helps or causes problems.
Cloudflare’s own WordPress plugin
Cloudflare’s WordPress plugin has its own automatic cache management (last updated April 23, 2026). It purges associated URLs when posts, pages, attachments, and comments are added, edited, or deleted, and it clears cache after theme changes. That overlaps with the purge WP Fastest Cache requests. None of the sources describe how the two interact, and none guarantee that running both works without issues. Use one purge mechanism by default, and if you run both, test an edit and check the header afterward.

Image optimization and Hotlink Protection
If you use WP Fastest Cache’s image optimization, its guide warns that Cloudflare Hotlink Protection can block the optimizer from fetching your images, and it recommends disabling Hotlink Protection for that use. Disabling it also means other websites can load your images directly, so weigh that trade-off. This advice applies to image optimization only. Do not disable Hotlink Protection on the basis of this guidance when you are setting up the basic cache integration. If images fail to optimize, check Hotlink Protection first.
Quick Recap
Choosing a setup
| Setup | Best suited when | What purges the Cloudflare cache | How to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| WP Fastest Cache integration only | You want local page caching plus Cloudflare delivery and do not use APO | The integration’s purge request, sent when WP Fastest Cache clears its cache | Check CF-Cache-Status after clearing; purge the URL if it still shows stale content |
| WP Fastest Cache with Cloudflare APO | You want edge HTML caching through APO and will test plugin compatibility | Not stated for this combination in the plugin guide or Cloudflare’s APO guidance (May 5, 2026) | Test with a page edit and header check after each plugin change |
| WP Fastest Cache with Cloudflare’s WordPress plugin | You already rely on Cloudflare’s plugin for automatic purges on content edits | Both mechanisms; their interaction is not specified in the sources (Cloudflare automatic cache management, April 23, 2026) | Edit a post, then confirm the change appears at the edge |
| WP Fastest Cache image optimization | You use the plugin to optimize images served through Cloudflare | Not applicable; this setting concerns image fetching, not cache clearing | If optimization fails, check whether Hotlink Protection is blocking the request |
Known limits
- The plugin’s guide says the integration changes “some settings” but does not list them. Do not assume it configures Cloudflare end to end.
- The guide does not publish a plan-by-plan compatibility matrix. Confirm that your Cloudflare plan supports the features you need.
- The plugin listing’s “up to” speed claims are marketing language. No independent measurement in the sources shows how much speed the combination adds, so judge the result on your own pages.
- The sources do not address Nginx-specific behavior for this integration, so test on your own server stack.
